Having perused blueshift's excellent work in this thread, I was reminded that seemingly everybody in this place is gifted with a talent for art. That's handy because I'm looking to commission a piece ... and since it's based on a tutorial, it shouldn't even be particularly arduous for someone with the knack!
I got in touch with the original artist to explain that I'd had a go and couldn't quite pull it off. I asked her whether I could have the original PSD files to customise and she responded that she couldn't offer those to me because it was a commissioned piece, but that she would make any changes I needed and send it to me as a PNG.
I wrote back to say thanks and to add that I wished to commission it myself rather than have her work for free. Since then she seems to have vanished, since my messages to her (three in the space of around six weeks) show as unread, judging by the icons on the right-hand side of them:
I hope that she's OK and is simply disorganised, but I really need to get on with this project and so have decided to seek other artists to replicate it for payment. The tutorial is here.
The motivation is that I'm the secretary of a charity called NoJEF, which issues grants for young people to travel abroad. (As long as they speak Esperanto and attend Esperanto events. Have I just taken the crown for geekiest person here?)
Since I'm running it now I'm intent to drag it out of the last century. Now, for example, we pay grants by online banking instead of countersigned cheques. Slowly but surely we're getting there. The next step is to build a website, which I'm perfectly happy to do by myself. I just can't get the damn logo correct.
Since the charity's all about sending people abroad to explore new lands I wanted to give the logo an Olde Worlde feel, maybe by the use of some old-fashioned writing and the presence of a compass replacing the letter 'o'. If I could make the whole thing look like an old map, so much the better.
Here's a VERY rough visual of the sort of thing I'd like:
So, if anybody here would like to take on the commission, please do get in touch, either in this thread or by PM. I insist on paying for any work and am not particularly miserly either, so I'm happy to listen to any offers.
For piece of mind, I'll paste my correspondence with the original artist below so that you can be sure that she was happy to do the work based on her original design before vanishing into the ether. (Not that this should matter anyway, since she wrote a tutorial on how to do the same thing, so it's not as though she doesn't want other people to have a go too.)
Thanks!
