I will try.
Manchester is south of Edinburgh but in The North.
Anything above Bristol is The North in my mind until you reach Scotland.

No no no. You need to explain to him the difference between a galaxy and a universe first! Then north and south. Start big and work down.

A galaxy is but one of many islands of stars in a vast universe.
A universe contains many galaxies. As long as it has the precise properties of ours.
Or
A universe is but one petal of the great multiversal flower.

Technically Brum might be a tad low but it'll do. It's not a case of just north and south. There are certain generic 'regions'. 'Regions'. There's The South, which includes London. There's East Anglia. There's the South West, including Bristol and Cornwall. There's The Midlands, including Birmingham. Then there's The North, which includes Manchester, Liverpool, Yorkshire, Cumbria etc. I'd probably say The North East is it's own 'region', including Newcastle. These are generic 'regions' of England, and are ill-defined. Approximations. Then there's Scotland, and Wales, which probably have their own internal generic 'regions'.

I lean towards somewhere between Nottingham and the Humber being a good border for the the North.
Liverpool - Sheffield - Grimsby (ish) is a good bet unless anyone wants to tell Sean Bean he isn't northern.

The United Kingdom is made up of THREE countries. Not quite. The UK is made up of the three countries of the island of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) plus the province of Northern Ireland. The UK is a sovereign state, or sovereign country, with a seat at the UN. England, Scotland and Wales are countries but not sovereign states/countries. And for the record, Bristol is in the south of England, Birmingham the midlands, Manchester the north. Martin
