Okay... This thread is for fellow non-teetotallers, but it's not about getting drunk - we already have a thread for that. This thread is about what drinks you enjoy drinking and what drinks you do not enjoy drinking.
My mind is very much on supermarket aisles.
I mean, there's the wine aisle. You know where you are with that. You've got white wine, red wine and pink wine, and sparkling wine, and that's about it. Then you have the beer/lager/stout/cider aisle, and you know where you are with that.
And then there's the 'other' aisle, called 'spirits', and that's the aisle I'd like to ask you to take a second to think about. The stuff in that aisle is ALL COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Like the Constructicons, if you ignore the colours. The only thing the stuff in that aisle has in common is it's stronger than wine. But in very different ways...
Where am I going with this? Not sure.
Okay, what if anything do you guys like to partake of that would be found in the spirits aisle?
I have more to say (nothing too serious) but I just want to pause there for a minute to gauge the mood of the forum on this subject.

I drink whiskey, having graduated from Southern Comfort years ago. I tend to have two or three on the go. Cheap blended for a short in bed on Friday/Saturday nights watching Netflix, current favourite for that is Tesco's Special Reserve, which is a cut above stuff like Famous Grouse in my opinion. But I also have single malt bottles for special occasions usually recommended by my father. Currently that's a very nice Bowmore which might just be the most divine drink I've ever tasted, and a bottle of Jura. I drink whiskey neat without ice or sodas.
On that note I found end of the last school year and into the summer my drinking was escalating by my standards, so since going back to school in September I've cut back to the recommended 14 units a week. Don't drink at all mon-thur. Doing that I've found a bottle of Stella on a Friday night tastes SO much better and it's helping me lose a bit of weight.

Interesting... as whiskey was the drink that drove me to begin this thread, though I've consumed maybe three bottles in total in my life.
Baileys / Irish cream generally is my number one from the spirits aisle. It is the most pleasant alcoholic drink in the world in my estimation. With plenty of ice. And Harvey's / other rich cream sherry. Though why sherry is in the aisle that has Baileys and whiskey, rather than grouping it with wine, is beyond me. Anyway, I always have Irish cream and rich cream sherry in the house.
But I'm a sucker for supermarket bargains. And when I see something I don't normally buy heavily reduced in price, I get tempted. Hence the bottle of Jim Beam that I currently have two thirds remaining of...

I do have Baileys in the house, that's my preferred liqueur. I also like port but don't drink red wine, only white. I've never tried Jim Beam; bourbons are uncharted territory for me.

So anyway, I can't drink whiskey neat, one sip and it's BRRRRRR! (*makes face and shudders*) Either I haven't learnt to like it or I haven't met the right whiskey, but there you go. But I can drink it diluted in coke. And I keep forgetting it's 40% compared to Baileys and sherry which are 17%, so I pour too much into the glass. But what's nice about it is it only takes a couple of sips and my brain's floating a few feet above my head. It made a fanfic appear in my head that, for better or worse, my brain would not have concocted sober, and I almost wrote and posted it while under the influence, but it made me too drowsy so I made a mental note of it instead and typed it before getting up this morning. Which means fewer typos.
Only had the one (generous) glass, which I always do with spirits, so no hangover, but it still knocked me for a rollercoaster ride for an hour or so. In a pleasant way.
Though I expect to continue with Baileys and sherry mostly, as I actually enjoy the taste of drinking them, and not just the effects.

Whiskey is the definition of acquired taste. I remember when Dad first told me to try it because I was looking for something different to Southern Comfort. I thought it was overpowering. Didn't take long to start to appreciate it. I suppose it's like many things - I've seen people go from instant coffee to their first Costa and be quite ill because the step up in caffeine is too much. However whiskeys can taste radically different, especially the smokey peat ones. Like oak aged chardonnays taste very different to normal ones.
Try Southern Comfort. It's a whiskey based liqueur so it's sweeter and has a fruitier taste. Very nice.

Maybe I should 'get into' whiskey. I'm a sophisticated chap afterall.
I've never drunk spirits, I'm a RED WINE MAN. Love red wine. I also enjoy an ice-cold premium larger, but drink Real Ale if I 'go out' (which, considering I've 'been out' once this year that isn't very often). But red wine is my thing. I try to stick to 14 units, but it's easy to creep past it. I definitely save beer for when I'm off, as Pins says it tastes better, and mainly save wine for when I'm off to, but occasionally have a nice shirazy or merloty nightcap.

The thing I found about the sudden drop to 14 units when that happened a few years ago is that it makes alcoholic drinks something special - you can't just down beer when you feel like it because you're thirsty. For example - my current weekly intake is set to be 14 units exactly, but it means being regimented about it (4x 284ml Stella bottles, 2x 50ml whiskeys, 2x 187.5ml glasses white wine, which equates to a pint of Stella and a whiskey on Friday & Saturday and two glasses of wine on Sunday evening).
