Asking for a friend who currently has access to a free salad bar, has claimed Salad Week victory and yet is only eating some bread rolls from it while claiming they constitute a salad...

Oxford English Dictionary says:
1. A cold dish of vegetables such as lettuce and cucumber, usu. raw, chopped, and seasoned with oil, vinegar, herbs, etc., and often combined with egg, cold meat, fish, etc.
2. A vegetable or herb that can be eaten raw.

Just for the record, Sausages don't count as salad either.

Croutons, yes. Bread rolls, definitely not. Just because they're sat by the salad bar doesn't mean they're salad.

I worry about the 'etc' in that definition. It leaves loopholes to be pulled open.

Yes, good point. Fortunately sausages appear nowhere in Martin's Ultimate Definition.

No, just like a cucumber by itself isn't a salad. It's all about the exciting combination options. Salads are the Special Teams of the vegetable world.

I think a nice bread roll can be a crucial part of a salad. But it is not a salad by itself. That's just crazy.

You can also have Fruit Salad Yes, and potato salad and rice salad, they all fit the dictionary definition (it says cold and _usually_ raw, but raw potato would not be a good idea). Fruits are vegetables. Martin

Oh no. Not the 'what's a fruit and what's a vegetable?' debate.
That way lies madness because the accepted definition means many popular vegetables are classified as fruit.

Fruits are the seed containing parts of plants. Vegetables are the edible parts of the rest of the plant.
