I've been thinking about it and Prime seems to have been one of the better candidates for this redesign because he is quite long limbed and his silhouette isn't that far from what is required. The cars would, I suspect, require more radical changes with their stumpy 'legs'. International sales must give Tak/Tom some pause for thought so they might be wary of Megs.
Shockwave? Never been reissued and would be amazing! Starscream (I agree with Bogatan that his lack of knee is an issue but at least there is more leg than the cars) is the most likely but I'll live in hope.

Starscream also benefits their business model of 27 repaints per mold.

Pretty sure the next one will be Starscream, repaints aside.
And there's a strong possibility Ultra Magnus will be coming after that

UM as a straight repaint of Optimus, or trailer included? I can't imagine they'd be able to do much to add hip, knee and ankle articulation to the trailer combined mode.

The full thing. Because this isn't a retool or alteration of the original, it's a wholly new and redesigned toy. As long as it looks like the original, they can make it do anything they want.

Sorry, but as this was driven by Takara and not Hasbro, I think you are all dreaming. The whole point of the Missing Link update is that it looks and feels like the original if they stay true to that, there's not a snowballs chance in hell of a Starscream. Magnus you could just about get away with, but it would be a bit panelly and flimsy.
Soundwave will be next, then if they do more, one of the Datsuns.

Starscream is one of their biggest go-tos. Probably second only to Optimus. Certainly before a datsun. Starscream had two masterpieces before any version of the datsun showed up. And he was the second new Masterpiece mold. Starscream and Optimus are the only non-japanese only new mold G1s in Robot Masters. Starscream is always one of, if not the first in the reissue track when Takara gets started on those.
Starscream isn't exclusively Hasbro's go-to, he's also extremely popular in japan too.
I also don't understand how Starscream doesn't fit Missing Link, while Ultra Magnus (which to me seems a much more difficult accomplishment) does.

I did legit forget about Soundwave though. That one's a really good call.

Not talking about his popularity but simply practicality.
Missing Link Optimus Prime is pretty much identical in vehicle mode, robot mode AND transformation sequence (hands tucking in not withstanding).
That isn't really feasible with Starscream without significant deviation, which defeats the point of the whole Missing Link.
Hence why a Datsun will be likely, there's your easy repaint.

I really struggle to see how the cars are going to work. I'd love to see it and eat my words but the shin/feet are so weird.
Soundwave does seem the best bet and has Soundblaster as a repaint and possibly comics colour.

Going left-field here, what if it's not one of the 1984 characters - after all, this is Takara, not Hasbro. There's a lot of possibility with the movie figures for adding articulation, since they're simple bricks, really, and adding some joints wouldn't change much - but at the same time I don't think that the likes of Hot Rod, Kup, or Galvatron are that big in Japan. The original Headmasters are, likewise, also fairly simple toys that you could add some sliding joints to and not compromise their original, chunky toys, so maybe they could go with someone like Chromedome, who was after all the leader of the Headmasters in the Headmasters cartoon.
It probably won't be any of those, of course, and it will be a 1984 toy and it'll be Soundwave or, indeed, one of the Datsuns. But interesting to ponder slightly further afield...

Or if Tomy Takara really wanted to piss on Hasbro's cornflakes they could do the Dinobots.

Grimlock is possibly a solid choice, tbf, and he has been getting bit of prominence lately. I mean, who saw that Robosen coming?

Or Rodimus Prime could be next if they are doing the main hero of each year in Japan. Followed by Chromedome etc. Personally, I'd rather they stick with Diacline/Microchange molds etc.

I'd take a Rodimus, that would indeed be grand.

I'd take a Rodimus, that would indeed be grand. me too. rodimus is kind of a stinky toy really, but rodimus with articulation, woah, that would be great.

I'd take any of those mid-eighties bricks with articulation. Rodimus would be brilliant but he might look a bit spindly posed as he's very thin.

I'd put money on Soundwave, but the later chunkier figures would really benefit.

Hear me out … Action Masters!
Just think how easy it would be to give them ball joints, waist swivels, ankle tilts, ab crunches… throw in a little extra articulation in the partners where it makes sense…
They could even sell those carded at retail.
I would buy them all!

Wouldn't a ML Soundwave just be a scaled down retool version of the Masterpiece?

Post by Pinwig on Apr 13, 2024 16:35:15 GMT
No because it should be an exact replica of the original but with articulation. MP Soundwave looks as much like G1 Soundwave as MP10 does Optimus.

It's the feel of it too. I thought it was telling in Sixo's review of Prime where he weighed ML, the original and a reissue and there were only a few grams difference.
