Don't you start sending me shite! I don't trust you!
I've got TOS on blu-ray, bought by the well meaning Mrs P a few years ago. Then at Christmas someone got me the twelve film set. I need to settle down and do it properly.

It is a subject I intend to educate myself in. Star Trek is an unnecessarily large hole in my knowledge bank. I was never a big Star Trek fan but my uncle was mad on it so we used to get dragged along to the cinema to see them when we were younger and whenever he was in it was on the tv. If you haven't seen Wrath of Khan you're missing out on a genuine cinematic masterpiece.

Oh yes, I've seen all the films. Well maybe not the last couple of next gen ones, but all the classic crew ones. I've seen all of TNG and the first three seasons of DS9. But I don't remember much about them.

TNG is good enough, very watchable. TOS hasn't aged well. If you remove the nostalgia glasses it's mostly badly shot, ham fisted nonsense.

I know and I expect the backlash. Just being honest, man. It may have been revolutionary for its time but it isn't now. Anyway, see you all in several weeks when the heats off me......

Then I rewatched the remastered HD versions and was genuinely surprised how good they were. They are still of their time but the original FX dated them more than the stories.

Just being honest, man. It may have been revolutionary for its time but it isn't now. Well yeah. Anything that was made in a given era and has an effect on the general development of how things are addressed in a given medium will appear less innovative when viewed later on alongside those things which have been influenced by it. By the very nature of the fact that what it has done has since been done by many successors. Look at E.E.Smith's Skylark or Lensman novels - there are a lot of elements in those which, if you compare them to the media of the present appear hackneyed and time-worn. But didn't then because they hadn't been done before. Things can be revolutionary, and also look like they belong to an earlier age - and both can be true. If the revolution that they were involved in was a generation or more ago it seems to me that it is almost inevitable really. Karl

That's kind of what I was getting at. It maybe suffers by being the originator and if you weren't around to grow up with it then you'll grow up with something that's done it better and is a lot more polished since then. The acting and scripting isn't great but it's another thing that's of its time, the production is actually really good for its time but it's badly directed and it's all shot too close in.
The Young Ones was before I was born, it looks awful now, almost every single reference is 35 years out of date. I still think it's brilliant comedy.
Apart from the sci-fi aspects and special effects, TOS still doesn't come across well to me.
