John Young was a heck of a pioneer, and one of a fast reducing club. He will be missed.

I'm still waiting for all the predictions of theoretical physicists on things like the ether, Hawking radiation, explanations of dark matter and energy and supersymmetry to come to pass. Speculative thinking is great, but can be misleading or mask alternative explanations. I prefer my science more balanced between theory and experiment than we have these days - even if it would be less media sensational. A preprint of the paper in question is available for anyone to read for free at arxiv.org/abs/1706.05379I like that it makes some experimental predictions though in looking for echos in the signals of gravitational wave collisions. However, unfortunately for the idea in question we have not detected any such echos thus far.

I know this is speculative. "Theoretical" is like, every other word in the article.
But this is what brings me joy in life.

That's the thing. We don't know. Dark Matter makes up like, what... 80% of the mass of the universe (or is that the number for dark energy? Both percentages way outnumber everything else) And we don't even really have an educated guess at what it is.

What are the front runners for Dark Matter?
Errr, WIMPS, is it?
Somekind of heavy neutrino?

Dark energy is about 70(ish)%, Dark matter about 25%. Nobody has any real idea what they are even if they are actually something. Lots of ideas as to what they might be about but little evidence to firm up or exclude many of them.
DE and DM will probably turn out to be combinations of ideas floating about and/or entirely new ways of thinking about things. All they really are is catch all terms to categorise some unusual observations. Sometimes that is useful to explore new ideas, other times it can be too limiting.

I can remember seeing a BBC documentary on Dark Matter/Dark Energy where a scientist (Kathy Romer iirc) pops up and says "I don't like Dark Energy and wish it would go away!"
