Your thoughts?

I love these guys, since they are pretty much what encapsulates Transformers - a robot folds out from a shape that it can't possibly have fit into! Some of their transformations were really clever (Laserbeak) some weren't (Rumble)
Universe Ravage is especially amazing, to get such a great looking Ravage from a flat cassette.

It was seeing Soundwave and his cassettes for the first time at a friend's house that really hooked me into Transformers. I'd taken Optimus Prime round to show him, but blow me if Soundwave wasn't better!
The thought that ANYTHING could really be an alien robot really spoke to my imagination.
I can't remember the name of it, but there was a little hard-backed book about electronics in our school library that had a photo of Rumble in it.
I very nearly tore the page out to keep, but the librarian had super-hearing and she heard the start of my very slow, careful tear from the other side of the room.
I got into so much trouble that day!

To this day, I am still boggled at the cleverness of the spy cassettes and how a flat block can turn into a cool animal or robot.

Spy cassettes are awesome, I just wish I had more of them, G1 Ravage and Laserbeak, plus Universe ravage are all I have not sure if I should include Titanium Soundwave's little Laserbeak in that though

Love them to bits! Always did, and they got such variation out of a simple alt-form.

The Spy Cassettes were pure awesomeness. I recall they struck me simultaneously as bizzar (Cassettes tapes? A Tape deck?), yet utterly compelling. When I realised the Baddie leader was a handgun, well, there's was no hope from that moment on!

Where as I like to sleep in my own filth. But that's an entirely different thread.
What other creatures could Spy Cassettes have turned into? Or did they pretty much do everything? Four legged, Eagle/Falcon, Rhino, coupla dinos. What else is there?
Expecting both good and goofy ideas.
My contrib': Insectoid.

You want lame?
Remember that twisty snake puzzle thing you could get in the 80s? A friend of mine had it and I always folded it up best I could into a cassette shape and pretend it was one of Soundwave's (impossibly large) cassettes.

Whats the best Soundwave - not talking about the crappy Movie ones of recent times or the ones from the Transformers Animated or plane version...
I'm considering buying a G1 reissue and the Cybertronian one, incidentally, I've seen an alt mode for the latter, a 'boom box' that either someones made up or is seen in the game....anyone know about that?

Yup. If it has the weapons that sounds reasonable. This the Classics reissue?

The Music label one is quite good too if you want something more in line with the classics line.

ah, very interesting as i have been contemplating this for ages. for me both soundwave and megatron are my two favorite characters but they have issues with alt modes that are inapropriate. first off i cant stand mass flubbing (tiny cassette player big robot) not cool. secondly, i dont like the cassette recorder as the alt mode for megs right hand bot. (dont get me wrong, the G1 cassette player is an awesome toy, but in my opinion a poor character choice. i like the idea of the satellite in the bayverse but the delux toy is not up to snuff. i dont feel a plane is appropriate really and i just dont like the animated van soundwave.
for me the best soundwave at the moment is the war for cybertron soundwave, cool bot mode and cool altmode. but then again i dont mind cybertron modes... oh and there is a boombox fanmode for the wfc soundwave you can find it on youtube and google im sure. it is a fanmode but pretty cool...

Yup. If it has the weapons that sounds reasonable. This the Classics reissue? Yup. Its the one that came in the box with the fold out Soundwave pic, empty cassette holder, Ravage and Lazerbeak, weapons etc. Complete. Not bad eh? ;D

Any version of the original Soundwave is a winner. It holds up remarkably well.

£40 is a good price nowadays for Classics Soundwave i think, especially if its mint in sealed box (MISB). If its just MIB i think it might be a bit high, but possibly still reasonable. Depending on where you can get it, or who's selling it, you could maybe find one for cheaper. I own quite a few Soundwaves and got them all for reasonable (or rediculous crazyily good) prices, though to be honest prices at the moment are very high on eBay where i got almost all of these: Encore Soundwave MISB - £23 or £25. (auction) - how i got this for that price god only knows Classics Soundwave MIB - around £28. (auction) Music Label Soundwave MISB - £35. (buy it now) Animated Soundwave MISB - £8. (in store) 1980's original actual tape cassette player Soundwave fully working - £12. (auction) The 1980's one is a high brick of a thing but plays actual cassettes, or in my case my TF story cassettes. The point i'll raise with this one is that i won him in an auction for £12 or thereabouts. I saw one that a guy was selling, the exact same thing, at "buy it now" for £150. A year on he is still listing it at that price. Somebody else is now trying to sell one for 90 quid. If a buyer just waits for an auction one to come around they'll get it FAR cheaper no bother. Always try to find that bargain or auction that could just go your way and save you money. Out of all Soundwaves my favourite is the Music Label MP3 player Soundwave. Still haven't got the right size of SD card to test him, and its too late to complain now if its not working - but regardless its amazing and fits in perfectly with the rest of the Classics/Generations Deluxe models - and transforms perfectly into his cassette mode.
