Good effort but still too much white. Though what can you do, apart from sticker the entire thing??

Does anyone know if the head of a CHUG Prowl would be able to be popped onto the head of a CHUG Mirage? Thinking of customing up a wee Machine Wars line following my acquisition of some of the Botcon ones from Nick. Thinking a GDO Hotspot would make for a nice MW Prime. Andy Sorry forgot to check, amazing what 16 hours in bed to does to clear the head though. Chug Prowl, attached by pin. Mirage is on a ball joint. So no easy swap, plus Prowls head looks a bit crap and I think would look too large. Almost certainly prevent transformation. But I did check CW Streetwise and that is on a ball joint. As the heads wont easily come off no idea how close a fit they are, but it would almost certainly be an easier head swap. Streetwises head is roughly the same size as CHUG Prowls even so it looks like it would fit better and CW Prowls head being less blocky should be smaller still.

I hate to sprinkle a dash of seriousness on an otherwise suitably bonkers section of the Hub (annoying rhyming week included) but I'm looking for some help. Most would say I'm beyond help but I digress.
I've mentioned on another thread that I've recently completed my strike plane collections for MP, CHUG and Movieverse lines but thanks to my hatred for incomplete figures/OCD I've ended up with a few spares so my plan is to do some customs and add to the Strike gangs.
I have limited experience in painting models. When I say limited I mean I've done it once, my mum bought me a Moebius kit (Bela Lugosi as Dracula) almost 3 years ago and I've yet to finish it due to my insistence that I can do it better. I must've stripped it clean and started again a dozen times but I'm at the stage where it's about ready to have the head glued on as the final touch and I'll post pictures in the gallery once it's done.
On advice of a YouTuber I've used mostly Tamiya paints for it with the odd Revell and Humbrol thrown in and I'm sure they're all acrylic or enamel. So after that incessant rambling my question is would these types of paints be good enough for doing customs on the types of plastic used for TF figures?

Personally I prefer working with acrylics to enamels, partly because waterbased paints are easier to clean of the brushes and my breakfast bar than enamels are. I'm currently getting some decent results with Games Workshop's stuff (acrylics) on SW and Marvel figures, and I'm expecting similarly decent results on my spare Jetfire. That said, acrylics are going to give a slightly "softer" colour pallette than enamels - more sunbow-esque than Dreamwave-ish, if you follow the analogy. It all depends on the kind of look you are going for I think.
I should add that I've also experimented in the past with car spray paint (did a metallic blue respray on a KO Valkyrie) which has a startlingly "metallic " look to it. Not sure I'd recommend that as a way to go though - it really worked more by luck than judgement I'd say.

Karl I worked with acrylics primarily for that reason, they're easier to clean and if need be wipe off the model and start again. I'm not fussed on them matching colour palettes perfectly but something to blend in as much as possible with coloured plastic and not stand out too much as being painted, probably best sticking with the acrylics then. They're spares so if it comes to the worst then they're effectively throwaways as it is. Starscream MP is the most valuable but his joints are loose and has damage to one of the tail fin radar beacons so his value is limited. Nebular Starscream makes a nice Acid Storm as it is so one of my Movie Ramjets is becoming Sunstorm, it's primarily white so a nice clean canvas to start with. I've got a Movie Starscream (the grey one with black markings) and MP Starscream to figure out what to do with now.

Or would it be better to put down a white or black primer coat then build from there?

Or would it be better to put down a white or black primer coat then build from there? I'd say depends on what paint you are using. When I worked with acrylics previously, and with enamels I tended to prime things - but favoured a mid grey rather than white (there is only on thing worse than painting over white, it is painting white as a top-coat over anything). Recently I've been using the newer Citadel "Base Coat" range, with which I can get by with a couple of coats of my intended final colour without needing to prime. Karl

"Everything in g2 was garish" is as big a myth as "neon!"
Sideswipe, Starscream, Jazz, Optimus, Inferno, Dinobots, autorollers, laserrods, laserbikes, minibots, axellorators, hero optimus were not garish.

That Fire Convoy is absolutely lovely. If that had been a proper released toy I would own a version of that mould now. Tomy and Hasbro missed a redeco I didn't even know I wanted.
