The next MP is Sideswipe!
There's been a lot of crowing on other forums about giving the slot to a "nobody" who is "undeserving", but I always liked the G1 design. Why should relatively little impact in fiction matter so much? Just let them make a cool toy!

Sideswipe was *the* G1 car toy!

For me it was Jazz and Sideswipe.
I wonder though if Classic Sideswipe (and the resulting comics appearances) and Actionmaster Sideswipe make him more of a character to me than the average American who makes up most of the whining on the big boards, because I thought it was a great choice.
Besides we know everything has to be repainted at least twice nowadays so Sideswipe was always top of the pile.

They will sell an astonishing number of these to petrolheads. It's an excellent choice.
He didn't really do anything significant until G2, although as you say Andy he had a much greater shelf presence in Europe with the '91 Classics and AM releases. Japan didn't get either of those but he still seems popular- he and Red Alert were as expensive as Skywarp and Thundercracker in the limited reissue line and he was an early release in the book-style that sold out pretty damn fast. I remember loads of 03 Tracks and 04 Skids and even 02 Prowl left over, but 07 Sideswipe came and he went.

Plenty of repaint potential, though I'm personally hoping for a black G2 Sideswipe, complete with (detachable) spiky impractical wheels just like in the comic.

Given the random bits some of the MPs get, spiky tyres and over sized guns are quite possible if they opt for a G2 repaint.

Sideswipe, eh? Well, er, ok. Now, I like Sideswipe, a great deal, but I wouldn't have chosen him for a MP in a million years. What about some of the other big hiters? Soundwave, Shockwave...

Not sure I'd want to see a Masterpiece Soundwave. If they stuck to the original alt-mode but kept the humanoid mode in scale with the other Masterpiece toys he would end us as a rather comedically oversized dictaphone (I figure he would be about twice to three times normal size or something like that).
I am surprised it is Sideswipe though. I wonder if they are basing it on historical sales of the reissue lines or something? Or maybe it is just down to whatever someone somewhere in Tomy, some Hidden Master of the Transformers universe, decides he likes.

I agree with Ralph here, I don't really like Transformers who turn into cars to be Masterpiece sized, unless there's a real reason (Trucks, jets and other big things are fine with me, but not cars)
Though saying that, if he becomes cheap at some point around here (like Skywarp was in Argos) then I might get him

Karl Wouldn't a Masterpeice Soundwave mean he is the size of a regular tape player? They could then make him play real casettes so he can come with the complete set of Ladybird tapes! Plus big Rumble, Ravage & co.

Just another masterpiece sports car. I imagine if they are going for any kind of scale across the line that hes a head or two shorter than Prime and Rodimus. Hopefully with a realistic, if non specific car mode and a cartoon accurate robot mode. It sort of makes sense as a smaller masterpiece figure (with possibly a lower selling price) with lots of repaint potential if Hasbro have to be able to release it as well as Taktom to justify the production cost.

I haven't bothered to read opinions on other boards about this, but if you guys are right about the complaints then I'm genuinely shocked. Sideswipe has always been uber popular, which I found stange since he never did anything, ever. His only notable features are being Sunstreaker's generic brother, and being the mascot for G2. He had no personality, toy wise, cartoon wise, or comic wise. But dispite all that, he has always been one of the most popular TFs in the franchise. So if these same peopel are now bashing him being an MP? I don't understand anything, anymore. >_< Personally, I feel Jazz is more deserving. Prowl, too. Hell, Prowl is the autobot equivalent of Starscream, with tons of repaint possibilities. But, I always did like Sideswipe's design (Which is one reason his alternator was so dissapointing). And the way I look at it, at least it's not another Seeker or Optimus. Optimus has two molds. Starscream has two molds (And a dozen repaints). They could have milked those two out even further. So hey. This is more interesting to me than Rodimus. I agree with Ralph here, I don't really like Transformers who turn into cars to be Masterpiece sized, unless there's a real reason (Trucks, jets and other big things are fine with me, but not cars) Though saying that, if he becomes cheap at some point around here (like Skywarp was in Argos) then I might get him For Taktom, its a bit different but for Hasbro its not too different from Rodimus. They had that already... they were called "Alternators," lol. Yes, yes, I realize the difference in what you're talking about. I had to make the joke though. But aside from model accurate vehicle modes, that really is what the Alternators were ment to be. Small MPs. (In fact, they were ment to work with MP Prime, I believe, given they were all in the same basic scale).

I had Sideswipe as a kid and loved him. Like Andy says him and Jazz were the cars back in the day. Being a red Lamborghini didn't hurt. Not fussed about him getting an MP but were they to do a G2 repaint I would get it with nary a moments hesistation.

I think Alt and MP work together ok, better than ok often, but the MP were always after merged cartoon/comic/G1 toy accuracy in way that alts never were. Bluestreak is the only one that really was faithful to the original and then only the toy. For that reason I dont mind the announcement, but aren't certain to buy it.

I quite like the idea of Sideswipe as a masterpiece, I'll definitely be after him. I do wonder if TakTom will attempt what they did with the Classic mould and make it possible to turn the body around to make a proper Sunstreaker or if they'll do a straight repaint. I'd actually prefer if we got a Tigertrack as the straight repaint. I don't think it's totally beyond the realms of possibility as they're doing Sunstorm from the Starscream mould.

With everyone assuming that this will be repainted into Sunstreaker I feel I must let this out:
SUNSTREAKER WAS NOT THE SAME AS SIDESWIPE!

Red Alert, yes.

I agree, but Hasbro/Takara wouldn't make the badly implemented (in our opinion) homage repaints if the fan-base didn't buy them.
edit: I do agree though that MP Lambor is a bit of an odd choice. This is surely a figure for Alternity?

I notice that most of the discussion is about the character and the original toy and the relative merits of same, while a few folk have said "why not Jazz?". Maybe Lamborghini have offered their Countach design for a reasonable fee while Porsche are still holding out? Given how much artistry goes into the alt modes of the MP line (Convoy notwithstanding) I suspect vehicle licensing is as big a concern as character popularity, if not bigger. Nope. It's a Lamborghini Countach. To people who like cars, it's a Big Deal. Like the F15 to plane fans or the Earthshock Cybermen to Who fans -Nick

The likeness rights work differently for military vehicles, and so far Starscream has been the only thing that would have likeness rights issues. Megatron is a gun, which doesn't count (And isn't even marketable in 90% of the world), Hotrod is a completely fictional vehicle, Optimus is a very generic truck, and Grimlock is a fictional dinosaur. Odds are very very low Sideswipe will be a lamborghini contache (or whatever). Chances are far more likely he'll be like his Universe toy, and be a generic realistic lambo-like supercar. And given Hotrod, Megatron, Grimlock, and Optimus, he may not even be realistic, and go for cartoony instead.
