Gauging them. he knew who he was going to kill in the Time Wars (as either himself or Megatron) so was just testing their strength in the meantime. He was happy to try and kill Magnus, because he knew that 80's Magnus wasn't going to be in the Time Wars. No, but he knew Magnus was still alive in 2006. Along with Optimus Prime. And he shouldn't be able to remember the Time Wars at all unless he was made from the Straxus clone. Time Wars makes my blood boil with its lack of story logic whenever I think about it, and always has, even when I was a kid. In order to calm down I need to think of coherent time-travel stories instead. Like Back to the Future and the marvelous Bill and Ted. Martin

I guess when you're trying to work out causality from the deranged ramblings of a crazy robot who is trying to remember what happened twenty years ago when he was a completely different person it's best not to expect too much of it to make sense!

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #205 Time Wars - Part 7: THE EXCITING CLIMAX. Galvatron sees himself destroying Optimus, but in reality he is lost in the dream of a timeline that now won't happen. At Fortress Sinister, Ravage manages to talk Shockwave out of his depression by hypothesising that if he sends Cyclonus and Scourge back to the future, he has twenty years to work out how not to be killed by them. Megatron deserts Galvatron, also determined to control his own future. The time rift reaches the battleground and promptly shreds Galvatron, sucking his remains back into the future. Scourge follows, and Shockwave arrives with Cyclonus's body, which he casts into the maelstrom. The rift closes and Rodimus and Optimus shake hands, the former promising the latter that on his return to the future he will destroy the time machines that started the problem. Elsewhere, Transformation hypes up the return of the Underbase Saga next week; Destro visits his ancestral pile in Scotland in time for tea only to find an imposter sat in his place; there's a special 20p off coupon for readers who want to purchase one of four new exciting Thundercats toothbrushes; and on the letters' page, Gavin Morton of High Wycombe points out that the new line of toys in shops now are Micro masters, not Micro bots. Micro bots, he says, is the name for the Autobot team, and Micro cons is the name for the Decepticon equivalents.

It was only reading Stuart's Solar Pool writeup for this issue that made me realise how significant it is. The last big colour UK story. The end of the storyline begun with the movie. More characters leaving than just those destroyed. The end of a significant chapter.

The cover is recreated in the movie 'Samson'. Just as much fun as eating a cream bun.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #206 Cold War! Part 1: Back at the Underbase saga, Ratbat's Decepticons sit on an iceberg and watch the arrival of a strange Cybertronian ship. Assuming it to be Autobots, Piranacon attacks, but it is Scorponok and his Headmasters who exit the craft. Starscream is the one who has orchestrated this, and while Lord Zarak introduces himself (to Ratbat's surprise and disgust), Optimus and Blaster ride Fort Max to the previous location of the Club Con island. Back at the island's new arctic location, Buster is brought out by the 'Cons for his execution and to Starscream's delight lets slip about the Underbase, piquing Scorponok's interest. Elsewhere, Transformation fills in the background on the Underbase saga for those who've forgotten what was happening before Time Wars interrupted it; new TV tie-in comic William Tell is promoted (40p fortnightly, on sale now... or not as history proved); Colin takes on Robot Colin needing Steve's water pistol to save the day; there's a one page Dragons' Claws promo strip vainly hoping to help reverse the ailing comic's fortunes; and... Destro flies a plane into a greenhouse.

Seems like quite a lot was produced for it before it was pulled. If there was so much I wonder if it was going to be all original material with no backup reprint strip. Sounds like it was going to be a flagship title.

Indeed. I only ever saw the Special so assumed that was it. I had presumed the Annual was vapourware (Marvel UK had bad form for advertised things that did not exist) and The Bumper Comic was very hard to find where I was.

Can you imagine if the Ratbat toy was as big next to Scorponok as he is on that cover?

Can you imagine if the Ratbat toy was as big next to Scorponok as he is on that cover? He is certainly making the most of his mass-shifting abilities there! I'd love to see them quarrelling at toy scale! It would be quite amusing.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #207 Cold War! Part 2: While Starscream makes off with Buster, it's Decepticon vs Decepticon as Scorponok and Ratbat's forces clash in the arctic. Starscream dumps Buster in the freezing cold and leaves him with a device that he says will summon the Autobots to help him. Buster doesn't think of saving himself, but decides only the Autobots can stop Starscream. Meanwhile, in space, the Underbase heads toward Earth... Elsewhere, it's a fairly humdrum issue as Transformation recaps the current storyline (again) and announces competition winners; Destro unmasks Major Bludd as the impostor in Action Force; and on the letters' page, Dreadwing is astounded to receive a letter from a girl, albeit anonymously.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #208 Dark Star - Part 1: The Aerialbots rescue Buster just before hypothermia claims him and summon Fortress Maximus. Spike tries to save his brother. The Decepticons set aside their differences and plan to tackle Starscream, who has stolen Scorponok's ship and left, but attack the Autobots as they arrive in the arctic first. Both sides eventually call a truce when they realise they need to deal with Starscream and set off in pursuit. Starscream reaches the Underbase and begins to bask in its light, but is shot by Optimus. Starscream recovers and with the light of the Underbase gleaming in his eyes, attacks the Decepticon ship. Elsewhere, Transformation ignores promoting the March calendar splashed across the middle pages (featuring the cover of issue 138) to mention The Sleeze Brothers again, also omitting the usual cover art credit to name check editor Euan Peters and designer Chris Matthews instead; and on the letters' page, reader Ralph Moore of Burgess Hill informs Dreadwind that the previously mentioned problem with imported Mexican Transformers is the high percentage of lead in the paint used on them. Imagine that. Paint on Transformers...

I've always loved the idea that just bathing in the light of Underbase powers Starscream up. There's something wonderfully mythic about that.

BATTLE BEASTS THAT DIDN'T MAKE THE GRADE
Sticky the Stick Insect had the potential to branch out into new areas, but when the enemy attacked he stood rooted to the spot and snapped like a twig.

The credit for Euan Peters as editor with this issue stands out to me. I wouldn't mind betting he was too busy when he first took over from Furman to think of something like that, so this isn't his first issue as editor, but that Furman went after Time Wars finished three weeks ago.
