Wow. We've finally reached the beginning of the end of Budiansky!

I notice he did the layouts for most of the issue, even Delbo had gone. I think the art in this is pretty good. Mind you, Budianski's covers are good. He should have been drawing as well as writing.

Blimey Deathbringer was a bit of an anti-climax! And yet this UK story was considered worthy of a visual flashback reference in Matrix Quest Part 4 (and RG1, apparently), confusing the heck out of US readers. Martin

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #237 The Interplanetary Wrestling Championship - Part 2: Roadhandler takes on Jackhammer in the big fight, transforming to land safely after being 'thrown' out of the ring. He triumphs and sends a message to the crowd that his kind are only on Earth to protect and help against villains. Lord Zarak is watching. He returns to his base to send message to Cybertron for reinforcements to take on the Micromasters. Way of the Warrior: Carnivac is bored being a 'Survivor' and decides to strike out alone, leaving Springer, Catilla and the others. A car crashes into him, the driver being chased by a large robot dog that Carnivac dispatches. He turns to find Snarler and the new-look Mayhem Attack Squad looking at him. Carnivac calls them out and Bludgeon makes to attack. Elsewhere, Transformation continues to plug upcoming stories, enticing readers to stay with the comic for tales about Thunderwing and Megatron; the October calendar features Lee Sullivan's cover from #153; and Xlnyzg Xlorm uses his special Combat Code to help defeat the evil Zippo.

This is not a Geoff Senior cover I remember too well. It's better than a first glance makes you think it is.

To be fair, I had no knowledge of Shakespeare at the time so the phrase 'dogs of war' would not have had any special meaning to me.

I was reading “Crisis Of Command” to my son tonight- poor old Bumblebee sure gets a beating. Even back then Geoff was delivering knockout panels every time. Stokes’ follow up was a touch lacking but still has some classic panels.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #238 The Interplanetary Wrestling Championship - Part 3: Roadhandler continues to reign supreme in the ring while teaching humans the art of self defence on his days off. Zarak visits him and challenges him to take on his own wrestling team - the Air Strike Patrol. A match with Storm Cloud is set and the rest of the patrol occupy Roadhandler's fans outside the stadium. Zarak tells Roadhandler that if he loses the match the humans will come to no harm. Survival Run: Almost beaten by the Mayhem Attack Squad, Carnivac escapes after the army arrive to take on what they think is a robot dog. Carnivac hears the humans' death cries as he escapes. Meanwhile, Springer and the others learn of Carnivac's fate and Catilla decides to go and help him against Springer's wishes. Carnivac discovers Needlenose, but Octopunch threatens to kill humans he has found if Carnivac doesn't come out of his Pretender shell. Carnivac complies and receives the full wrath of Octopunch's trident. Elsewhere, Transformation brings news that Death's Head #10 was printed with the pages in the wrong order and fans can gain a replacement copy if they send their duff one back to Marvel; Andy Wildman and Geoff Senior are named as the big draw for upcoming British stories; the Mighty Marvel Checklist interestingly calls the current lead story in Transformers by the title "Wrestle Mania"; and on the letters' page, Noel Moore of County Roscommon is told that the story of how Goldbug becomes Pretender Bumblebee will be told in due course.

Was there ever a more stark contrast in the UK and US strips than here? While Roadhandler does Hulk Hogan impressions, the Mayhems kill soldiers on panel. Bizarre.

Also: 30 years since the Death's Head comic finished?? NOOOOOOOO.

Very mixed feelings about this issue as a kid! I generally liked the post-Time Wars Survivors stuff and Carnivac's character arc, but Catilla was one of my favourite toys. So I probably reread this one fewer times than most issues.

The Catilla death was odd. For one thing, he was still available in the shops as a toy. For another, it didn't seem right a TF dying from a sword thrust in the side, when other TFs get blown to bits and put back together again. Thirdly, when Carnivac was asked if Catilla was dead, he said, "As good as!" What were young readers supposed to make of that? If he's dead (which later stories confirmed), why not just say so?

Oh right. I thought I'd missed something in the issue. Yes, I haven't read these stories before so if that hasn't happened yet I didn't know. Although I can hardly complain about spoilers given these stories are 30 years old.
It's funny, I definitely have a gap here. In my head I have read these issues, but it seems this batch I didn't get originally (while I was getting Punisher instead) I never did read when I eventually got them 20 years ago.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #239 The Interplanetary Wrestling Championship - Part 4: Roadhandler takes a beating until Highjump and Tailspin arrive with his fan club. He decides to fight properly and gives Stormcloud a battering. Zarak and Stormcloud escape while Swindler fills Roadhandler in on what's been going on. Roadhandler decides humans will always be in too much danger around him and turns heel in the ring with a speech insulting his fans. Two of them, Evan and Dwight, question the truth of what he said, but Roadhandler tells them to believe in themselves, not heroes, before heading off. Savage Place: Jose slams his truck into Octopunch, freeing Carnivac. He tells Carnivac to leave, but the rest of the Mayhem Attack Squad have arrive and, remembering the soldiers who died earlier, Carnivac refuses to go. He puts up a good fight, but is at the mercy of Spinister when Catilla suddenly arrives to protect him. Bludgeon skewers Catilla with one of his swords, mortally wounding him, and the Decepticons flee as Springer and the others arrive. Carnivac swears he will avenge his friend Catilla. Elsewhere, Transformation promises that the origins of the Pretender Classics will be revealed during the American mega-epic starting next issue; Ratchet and Ravage feature in the A-Z; on the letters' page Ian Fletcher of Southampton is pleased to find a copy of Transformers Universe in his local WH Smith while Brooksie of Farnham asks questions about the new annual yet to be mentioned in the comic; and on the back page, Cadbury's Curly Wurly is back with more amazing info including the fact that Tommy Greene claimed the title of World's Greediest Gobbler after scoffing 288 Oysters in only 93 seconds.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #240 Back from the Dead - Part 1: Ratchet suffers nightmares caused by the anxiety of trying to repair the dozens of Autobots damaged in the Underbase war with Starscream. He ponders returning to Cybertron to find better medical equipment to help him. Meanwhile, on that self-same planet, the Sports Car Patrol ready themselves for transport to Earth to join the Air Strike Patrol. Out to Lunch!: Having returned to Cybertron, Darkwing and Dreadwind drink away their problems with high-grade fuel at Maccadam's Old Oil House. Outside, the two Mecannibals who were trailing them munch on an endless supply of metal. Inside the bar, Quickswitch awaits Decepticon informants but finds himself having to deal with the Mecannibals while the other patrons flee. Oblivious to the fight, Darkwing and Dreadwind decide to leave before they're blamed for the damage. Elsewhere, Transformation is proud to announce that, commencing with this issue, UK writer Simon Furman is now in charge of the US story; readers can get a free set of Apollo All-Terrain Bike stickers at Halfords if they show the advert on the back page; Weetabix are offering a free Lego racing car in exchange for ten tokens from special boxes; and on the letters' page, Hi-Test shoots down theories as to how Goldbug might become Pretender Bumblebee.
