What did he transform into? Robot or animal? Playback? From his name, I'd guess a cassette or cassette player. (Though the name actually comes from the title of a Raymond Chandler novel.) Martin

Martin! You must read these posts. I need to know when I'm getting it wrong. This Megatron business has been quite the headscratcher.

What did he transform into? Robot or animal? Though actually I think Shockprowl was asking whether the cassette turns into a robot or an animal. (It's a robot, Shockprowl.) Martin

I think Shockers is asking about the other mode, as in is he like Ravage/Laserbeak or Rumble in his robot mode.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #245 The Resurrection Gambit - Part 3: Ratchet questions Megatron about the Pretender shells he has disregarded and ponders other uses for them. On Earth, Optimus Prime throws Bomb-Burst into a building, but then questions his anger and realises he is endangering the nearby humans. The Air Strike Patrol desert Scorponok. Meanwhile, Dreadwind and Darkwing return to Megatron with a body. Megatron reveals to Ratchet that his patient is non other than the Underbase ruined remains of Starscream. Underworld!: Three Autobot cadets enter the Underworld on Cybertron to undergo an initiation test. They encounter a group of mutant Transformers. Two of the cadets, Subsea and Flattop, are killed, leaving Tailgate alone. Above ground, Pipes and Outback lament their friend's stupidity and decide to find him. However, Tailgate manages to trigger an explosion that kills all bar one of the mutants. He then takes a swing at the leader, Rotgut, and manages to push him into the flames. Pipes and Outback arrive to find Tailgate triumphant. Elsewhere, there's a free Action Force mini-comic, which explains GI Joe and Action Force are failing as separate units, causing them to unite to become GI Joe: The Action Force; Colin discovers that he is in 'The Place', where old comic characters are forcibly retired to and guarded by their worst enemies; and Snap, Crackle and Pop help some archaeologists find the lost city of Gakwar with the help of a bowl of Rice Krispies.

This Combat Colin story was my first exposure to The Prisoner as I would not see it until the early 90's run on Channel 4.

Rotgut doesn't half look like that double Pretender FunPub did a few years ago.
I've always liked Jeff Anderson's art, but it's very different to his usual style in this. He's gone all Wildman with the faces. Really good stuff.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #246 All The Familiar Faces - Part 1: Under duress, Ratchet installs Starscream's remains in Megatron's new Pretender shell. Megatron crows over his success and tells Ratchet to tidy up the mess in the laboratory. Darkwing and Dreadwind agree to stay and serve Megatron while arguing with the Sports Car Patrol. On the Ark, Blackjack laughs as he sets the explosives revealing that they will go off regardless of Ratchet's compliance. On Earth, Prime realises he has been tricked and returns to his shuttle. Scorponok transforms to destroy it before the Autobots can leave. Demons!: On Cybertron, Seawatch is menaced by a group of nameless Decepticons. Some time later he is looked over by his Rescue Patrol teammate Fixit, who discovers that Seawatch was frightened into shutting down. Xaaron explains that the bodies of the Decepticons were found nearby sucked dry of energy. Jazz, Bumblebee and Grimlock go to investigate but encounter more Decepticons. While they fight, hideous creatures emerge from the shadows. Elsewhere, Transformation warns readers to prepare themselves for an amazing wraparound cover on the 250th issue; the Mighty Marvel Checklist reveals issue five of The Bog Paper is on sale now, featuring stories including The Gents, Superloo and Flush Gordon; Colin escapes the Amazing Dave on a Penny Farthing; and on the back cover, St Ivel advertise their eight Fiendish Feet yogurts with a focus on Spooky Wooky.

Terrific cover on this issue, and some great art in the B/W story.
Why do Fiendish Feet wear wellies? That isn't very frightening.

I'm not impuning them, just asking why they wear wellies. Given the feet are what's fiendish about them, you'd have thought there would be some thought about the shoes.
I approve of the name Howling Wilf.

Furman's doing a good job trying to knit the two continuities together at this point, but it's a bit jarring to see Jazz, Bee and Grim wandering about Cybertron when a few pages before they were in a deactivated pile. I assume Demons takes place once they've become Pretenders?
Really can't get over Anderson's art at this point. It's so good.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #247 All The Familiar Faces - Part 2: Prime tries to convince Zarak that they're being played and Zarak wonders if he can trust Prime. On Cybertron, Ratchet unveils the newly restored Starscream in his Pretender shell. Starscream's mind is blank, ready for Megatron's instruction. Megatron orders the destruction of the Ark and Ratchet causes the lab to explode, giving him time to escape. He discovers Megatron has already dispatched Starscream to Earth and turns to find the Decepticon leader bearing down on him. Dawn of Darkness: Bumblebee escapes the creatures looming behind him and calls to the others to help. Firing on the creatures seems only to empower them, but Xaaron arrives and unleashes a blast of pure Energon that overloads and destroys them. He explains that the creatures, native to Cybertron before the coming of the Transformers, were entombed by Primus and that there may still be thousands of them deep below the planet's surface. Elsewhere, Transformation continues to build hype for the upcoming 250th issue by reminding readers that the comic has now been a regular feature in newsagents for over five years; Dreadwind is absent for the second week in a row; Colin manages to get the villains on his side by explaining they're just as much prisoners in The Place as he and Steve are; and Barry Kitson's yuletide cover to issue #145 completes a year of cover calendars.

It really threw me that this story features Bee, Grim and Jazz when in the other one in the same issue they're in bits on the floor. It's a weird time for the UK strips, this 15 page story is badged as an epic tale, but it's not even long enough to equal one US comic. It's over before it gets going.

We're probably still making our way through stuff designed to be run between US issues before the decision was taken to go partially B&W with the UK stuff. See also the Decepticon Powermasters drinking in the bar.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #248 All The Familiar Faces - Part 3: Blackjack observes the returning Autobot shuttle and makes to leave, only to come face to face with Kup. He drops the remote trigger for his explosives, which begins the countdown. On Earth, Zarak agrees to talk to Prime just as Starscream descends and exits his new Pretender shell. On Cybertron, Megatron throttles Ratchet but is stopped by Dreadwind, who is just in time to explain that Ratchet has has used the prototype Pretender shells to restore Jazz, Grimlock and Bumblebee, just as the three Autobots arrive. Fallen Star: Starscream remembers how both Autobots and Decepticons used to tremble before him, but he now thinks everyone just laughs at him. The reality is the opposite and when he stumbles into three Autobots sent to report on him to Optimus Prime, his anger boils over and he quickly dispatches all of them. Doing so restores his former menace and he swears to again be the most terrifying of Transformers. Elsewhere, Colin's special Combat Whistle causes his trousers to attack The Brain; on the letters' page, Dreadwind reveals to Simon Halladay of Leeds that Ratbat hasn't been around recently because he's dead; and Knorr pose the important question of what has eight legs, a tail, six more legs, a fin, some bones and a wheel?
