30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #253 Yesterday's Heroes - Part 2: Jazz and Bumblebee persuade Grimlock they need to go to Earth. Meanwhile, Lord Thunderwing orders his Mayhem Attack Squad to destroy the three Autobots. Optimus Prime takes a shuttle to Earth's moon, where he intends to sulk indefinitely. Hot Rod demonstrates how he has rigged a Guardian V droid under his control to attack the rest of the shuttle's crew to try and shake Prime out of his depression. The droid breaks free of Hot Rod's control and blasts Highbrow before cutting off Hot Rod's hand. Prime returns to the shuttle and orders the droid to release Hot Rod. Shadow of Evil: Rodimus attacks the Autobots, but Kup is reluctant to order the use of lethal force against his old friend. He signals Autobot City for reinforcements and the Autobots try to hold out. In a dream world, Rodimus is pursued by the shadow of Unicron and mentally tries to fight back. In the real world, Rodimus falters. As the reinforcements arrive, Kup orders them to shoot to kill. Elsewhere, Transformation brings news of an upcoming competition that will give readers a chance to win toys of Jazz, Ironhide, Sunstreaker, Wheeljack, Inferno and Prowl from the new 'Classics' line; the editorial is also excited about the next US story being drawn by Geoff Senior; Scrapper and Seaspray feature in the A-Z; Colin takes on The Brain in space; Knorr ask, "What goes splash, splash, splash, splash, splash, splash, splash, splash?"; and on the letters' page, Dreadwind explains that the benefit of combining with Darkwing is that they can get into the cinema on one ticket and that Unicron lives at No.2 Frith Street, Lower Dinglepring, WC1.

I won one of those! It was a drawing competition, wasn't it? Martin

Did Longtooth really die? Can he? I suspect it was just one of his spare shells. (Arcee and Kup really show their concern for Longtooth.) I think Unicron recognised him as a Matrix-bearer and made a point of killing him. But it wasn't the main TFUK timeline, and all the best characters except Red Alert were dead by this point anyway. You neglect to mention the most Earth-shattering event in this story - THE DEATH OF LONGTOOTH! That'll be because the story doesn't make it clear he's dead? No idea. It's in the future past...

He's not dead.
Transformers are notoriously hard to kill.

That'll be because the story doesn't make it clear he's dead? I think you'll find that if you play 'Instruments of Destruction' from the animated movie soundtrack, while reading this story, it'll be quite clear that everyone dies from Unicron's death-rays. Martin

Wait, hang on. I know Longtooth does his Captain Ahab bit in the American comic, but are we saying these last few issues are the sum total of his UK story appearances?

Aye, Perchance to Dream and Earthforce are on the horizon. Yep, Bludgeon, Octopunch and Stranglehold are regulars in both the US and UK stories from now until the end, but Longtooth, Pincher and Doubleheader are done after their one appearance in 'Matrix Quest'. Martin

Well I mean...
When it comes to 'Heroic' and 'Autobot', he's pretty heavily weighted toward the latter.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #254 Yesterday's Heroes - Part 3: While Bludgeon's Mayhem Attack Squad track the Autobots, Bumblebee bids farewell to Emirate Xaaron. Bludgeon attacks just as the Autobots are about to travel to Earth, and all of them vanish bar Xaaron. On the moon, Optimus takes his frustrations out on the Guardian droid and swears that from here on he will stop at nothing to bring down the Decepticons. Bumblebee and the others materialise not on Earth, but in the heart of Cybertron. Turning a corner they come face to face with Primus himself. White Fire: Inside the Matrix, Rodimus battles with the manifestation of Unicron. Outside, Kup orders the Autobots to hold their fire. Rodimus falters for a second, giving Unicron enough time to strike out with his body and blast Strafe. Within, Rodimus tries to turn the Matrix against Unicron; without, his chest cavity containing it opens. Kup realises what's going on and rips the Matrix from Rodimus, trapping Unicron within it and breaking his link with Rodimus. Himself once again, Rodimus ponders how in time he will have to go back into the Matrix to deal with Unicron once and for all. Elsewhere, Transformation gets very excited about the fact that after an extended break, Stephen Baskerville is back with the comic providing covers; Colin tussles with The Brain and crashes the Combat Rocket on the moon; and on the letters' page, Dreadwind says that the Stunticons will be the only Decepticon 'Classics' releases for now, that he is 42 feet tall, and that he went to school with an Amstrad CPC.

I love the fact that Xaaron turns up here completely unannounced to the US readers. But it's too contrived that we get our first ever US mention of Primus just before Primus shows up. Martin

Yes, that's a bit naff. You can imagine though after years of having to weave a plot around the US comic that Furman was going to be a bit gung-ho when he took the reins.
