The Switch will cost £279.99 apparently
Bit higher than I'd be comfortable with, but not as high as it could be!

Either there will be decent bundles or the price will drop closer to what Im happy with by the time I get one.
I want a fancy Pokemon coloured one or something this time.

I like it, but it's too pricey. £340 to get it with Breath of the Wild. The new Mario looks very good but is not out until later in the year. Other games look fun but are priced £50-£60. Even 1-2-Switch (the Wii Sports-type-should-be-a-pack-in release) is £40. Second controllers for local multiplayer are also expensive with a Pro Controller costing £65 and a set of Joy-Cons for £75. Although admittedly for a lot of games you only need one Joy-Con per person.
More information keeps coming out about the system, but it's struggling to seem a worthwhile purchase to me at the moment.

Yeah I didn't expect the games to cost £60ish, or is that normal nowadays?

Just looked at a list of upcoming PS4 games and they're generally £40-£50. Some smaller games are cheaper and some are more expensive - but they seem to be special editions rather than the base game. Sony are also better at sales I've noticed in the past.

It does feel as though maybe someone at Nintendo is using Brexit to inflate the prices a little more than they needed to. Or maybe it is justified, but the price is still higher than everyone hoped for.
I can completely believe that released a year ago the console would have been more like £200-250
I can't believe the games will stay that high though. Surely they'll have to stay competitve with sony and Microsoft.

I enjoy that 1-2 Switch which I assumed would be the freebie "here's what it does" game is apparently a $50 game (no idea what that will be in the UK, probably £50)

£50-60 a game? They can fuck right off. -Ralph There is no free online play anymore, you will need to subscribe BUT as a subscriber bonus you will get ONE free NES or SNES game a month But when that month is over you cant play it anymore. You see, NES and SNES games are super expensive and precious

Personally I think if they have to charge for online play, they should include a Netflix-like library of rotating games full of oldschool NES/SNES stuff, but loads of it, to encourage people to sign up. I mean, Nintendo has an insanely huge back library, but 99% of it is not current AAA ware!

Is the online play charge in addition to buying the game or separate thing? -Ralph Okay so currently if you buy one of their games like Splatoon (which has a single player mode but really its a multiplayer) you can play online for free. With the Switch, you must pay a subscription to their online service. Playstation and XBOX charge for online play too, but Nintendo never used to. Online play is still free on PC platforms like Steam. I want to like the Switch, and I want to be in on the ground floor with stuff like this, but man, Nintendo's penny pinching feels both really mean and designed to stop it gaining any momentum/being interesting/building a gaming community. OH and if you subscribe to online play you can chat to your friends, not through the Switch (ha ha no) but with a SMARTPHONE APP which will enable you to TALK TO PEOPLE (I kid you not)

Hang on. So if I legally buy a game which may cost up to £60 and I wish to use the online play feature I have to pay AGAIN to unlock that feature? What a load of shite.
Yeah, can't see this appealing beyond the current customer base.

There's been huge backlash, maybe they'll relent. It just feels so dumb and backwards and shooting yourself in the foot to me.

Seems a bit odd for Nintendo. They've always seemed a bit more friendly and nice than other games companies. I've tended to think of them as the Lego of Games companies in how they come across. I have even kept my old Game Boy Colour (still works after 18 years!).

And stuff like the really really old 30+ year games... by this point you'd be expecting them to give them away for free as bonuses, using their extensive back catalogue to reel people in as a sweetener.

This at least wont affect me as I only ever spent a couple of hours online across the Wii and Wii U on Mariokart.
Still a crappy move.
And if they are going to do it, the classic games should either be treated as purchases the same as you've been able to buy them for years or at least you keep accumulating the games for as long as you pay.

It's like Nintendo are deliberately trying to kill their console department. You would think with them being under pressure after the Wii U they'd go back to something that's cheap and easy to access and will appeal to casual gamers like the Wii, which even did a great job of appealing to non-gamers. Nope, they've gone ultra serious with a console more expensive than the PS4 and Xbone and game prices 20% higher than those consoles and a worse subscription service.
I'm buying a Wii in protest.

If the longer you subscribe the more games you accumulate that you keep that you can access as long as you subscribe, you are more likely to stay subscribed. It's a no-brainer. That's what Playstation do.

£50-60 was the new release price for xbone and PS4 when they were released, this is not unexpected. Console price is also cheaper than they were at release. Controllers are pricey, but not much more than the others. I don't mind paying for their online service, if it becomes a smart competitive at live or ps network, that remains to be seen

I don't mind paying for their online service, if it becomes a smart competitive at live or ps network, that remains to be seen Dyou know, i had no idea how much replacement controllers are these days until a Black Friday deal for one at £45 was deemed to be incredible value. What I would say is Sony and Microsoft now have the hardcore market tied up tightly and Nintendo have been on the outside messing with gimmicks to set them apart. They seem to be trying to jump hard into the serious market which is optimistic. Bar the Nintendo 'fanboys' (eurgh, hate that word) and a few people curious about it or desperate to have the latest tech, who is really going to want it? I can't imagine too many people sitting during their 10th hour of COD suddenly wanting to rush out and buy a brand perceived as being aimed at kids with an awkwardly sized controller.

It feels aimed less at the serious market than the other 2. The basic concept still has that fun with friends thing that made the Wii so successful. But now its mobile. So potentially this could still be big with casual gamers.
But it appears to be powerful enough to maybe get a few hardcore gamer games on it.
Plus Nintendos biggest market is currently there 3DS range which this should serve as an upgrade to. As long as Nintendo offer suitably portable types of games for it.

The market, at least part of it, will be 3DS owners being convinced to upgrade to a more powerful portable system and some of those aren't much under £200 even now. So I'm guessing £250-300. Okay so turns out I was closer ot the price 4 months ago than today.

The cost will restrict casual gamers dropping hard on it. It needed to catch on quick and gather momentum, I'm not sure that will happen because nothing in it will convince folk to sell up and swap over. The 3DS is and 2DS are cheap at half the price with their existing back catalogue and own gimmicks, the 3DS is ultra portable and the 2DS is ultra kid friendly. Would you want to spend almost £300 plus double the price of your current DS games to carry about something that's either too big or splits into a tablet and 2 small sticks that are in danger of being lost? I just can't see this working at that price for the market they need to appeal to. It's like the Wii U, which doesn't seem to have been a success, only more expensive and the massive controller screen breaks up.

I don't think the Switch is that portable though. I mean the DS line is very robust and folds up into a box you can take without worrying about breaking anything. The Switch is a tablet and looks a lot more damagable! Also battery life of 2.5hr-6hr depending on game. I want to like this!! D:

Nintendo have made most of my favourite consoles through the years. The NES was the first console I remember everyone needing to have, I was born in 82 so I was probably too young to remember much about it. The SNES was my first console, all my friends had it and we'd run home from school and spend all night playing Mario World then talk about it the next day. The N64 was a phenomenal console and I used to save my paper round money to order rare games from the back of gaming magazines for it and the Saturn. I bought a GameCube with the last of my wages the day I left my first job with no other job lined up. The Wii got me interested in gaming again. The Sega Saturn is still my all time favourite console and the one I play the most even now but I still have the N64 set up in the living room and SNES in the bedroom.
