Got my SNES Classic. Its a thing of tiny beauty. Only had a very quick go, but its absolutely perfect. Controller feels exactly right and the games just as they have always been. Desperately been following the stock tracking sites to get one of these as a present for someone for ages, and finally discovered today that the Tesco in Chichester actually had some on the shelf in store. Quick trip out and I managed to bag one of the two they had left. Well chuffed, the recipient is going to be over the moon. I nearly bought the other for myself, but I reckon in that line I'd get more from the C64 mini coming out next year. I think I'll have one of those.

As of the 25th December I will be a Switch owner. Thanks to a work discount got it and Mario and Zelda for a decent price brought down further by the parental units contributing to it for Christmas.
Now I just need to make use of it, unlike the Wii U.
25th December will also mark a quarter of a century since I got my Snes. I feel old.

Despite being told for months that he's not getting one, I think Jonathn still believes a Switch is coming on Christmas day.

DO NOT WAIT!!!! The first thing you should be doing with it is slapping on the screen protector

Switch be mine. Spent half an hour trying to get the screen protector on clean and then threw away the first one. Second one went on okay after about 5 minutes. Ugh.
Still havent had a chance to use it on the TV, but it feels really good as a handheld. And it really makes the Wii U's attempt at hand held gaming look even more embarrassing.
Mario Oddessy, so far so good.

Just Mario and Zelda. Given the amount of time Ive spent on consoles in the last decade, they should be enough for a long while.

That's great! Really fantastic idea.
I am going to rejoice in the idea of the cardboard exo-skeleton that lets one telefactor an on-screen mecha. That is fantastic! But the whole idea is a really neat use of the platform, really like it.

Since the backpay on my PHI has arrived we now have the money to buy Jonathan a Switch
Are there any decent deals - either cheap or games thrown in - going around?
And is there anything else you need to get with it - I've heard Matt mention screen protectors.

You need a screen protector. I advise tempered glass unless you think that might not be suitable for him Soft case is fine, I got the Zelda one If he wants Mario it is worth getting the bundle, I think you save a bit BUT there is no physical game, just s download which is lame. What sort of games does he like? It has lots of decent cheaper indi games

Okay, done some checking. SwitchThe prices are pretty much stable. The Switch is moving massive numbers at the moment (one of the fastest selling consoles ever apparently) so they're not doing any bundles. The Mario bundle is sold out but it was meh anyway. GAME offers bundles but they do it to force you to buy games you don't want (they don't actually sell the Switch seperately) Amazon is your best bet if only for peace of mind as they're a company with top notch customer care. Grey or Blue/Red (I chose the latter), both £279.99 www.amazon.co.uk/Nintendo-Switch-Neon-Red-Blue/dp/B01N4NBHPMIt has room for an SD card upgrade, I've not got one yet and I have tons of games (though I do tend to buy physical copies if I can) Screen coverYOU NEED ONE OF THESE STRAIGHT AWAY. The dock is hard plastic inside it, and the Switch screen is plastic, it WILL scratch it if you are even slightly not careful. I bought this one: www.amazon.co.uk/Screen-Protector-Nintendo-Switch-Tempered-2x-TRANSPARENT-Glass-Protectors/dp/B01N9RG3XSIt's a tempered glass screen protector - means it is strong and flexible and will help protect it against pretty much anything. As it is tempered glass it is really easy to put on as well and won't bubble. (To all intents and purposes is feels like plastic but it's just stronger) HOWEVER they do say that you should wait a day before turning on the switch after applying the screen protector, or the heat from the screen might make the adhesive go a bit funny. CaseIf you're taking it anywhere you'll need a case. Of course do you want to encourage taking it anywhere? I'm a paranoid chap so did look into the expensive hard cases first. Ended up getting a soft one, and it's survived many a train journey in my bag. About £10-£15 www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N10SBT4/ref=twister_B01MV40STV?_encoding=UTF8&th=1GamesThe big killer apps are Zelda or Mario. Both are very similar open world games, I'd probably suggest Mario as the better choice for you, as it's a bit more 'pick up and play and mess about', Zelda's more involved. Both are expensive - Zelda is £48 and Mario is £42 www.amazon.co.uk/Super-Mario-Odyssey-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B01MUA0D2A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1517036687&sr=8-1&keywords=mario+oddessyThe Switch e-shop has a lot of nicer cheap games too though. I've ended up picking up quite a few, cough cough www.nintendo.co.uk/Nintendo-Switch/Games/Games-1178441.htmlFrom what I've got, I've enjoyed: Stardew Valley - REALLY good, a 16 bit game where you basically make a farm and help people out. £10.99 - www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-software/Stardew-Valley-1287587.htmlBlossom Tales - Basically a 2D Zelda clone if you prefer the old style games - £13.49 - www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-software/Blossom-Tales-The-Sleeping-King-1319860.htmlShovel Knight - a nice 8 bit platform game, you are a knight with a shovel - £22.49 - www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-software/Shovel-Knight-Treasure-Trove-1200313.htmlGolf Story - 16 bit golf-based RPG - £13.49 - www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-software/Golf-Story-1285413.htmlWonderboy and the Dragons Trap - Remake of the old Sega game with amazing updated graphics, you can switch back and forth at will - £17.99 - www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-software/Wonder-Boy-The-Dragon-s-Trap-1215497.htmlSonic Mania - A new old-school Sonic game. I still have no idea to play this, but then, I never did! - £15.99 - www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-software/Sonic-Mania-1174779.htmlMinecraft - The old favourite - £19.99 - www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch/Minecraft-Nintendo-Switch-Edition-1214741.html

If you hold off until you come across a discount voucher for amazon/argos/ebay/paypal then you'll save at least £10.

Questions:
How do the screen protectors attach?
If they're trying to stop the screen from getting scratched won't they, which project out further, also get scratched?
In which case how do you get the screen protector off to change it?
Is a piece of cloth between screen and docking station good enough, as I've seen suggested elsewhere?

You can pull them off if it gets gnarly The dock is more likely to scratch the plastic screen than a glass screen protector as it is harder. Mine is still fine. I wouldn't put anything in the dock for fear of overheating

Jonathan wants to bring his Switch to London when we next come.
I'm told a USB-C cable will charge it. Is this right?

Jonathan wants to bring his Switch to London when we next come. I'm told a USB-C cable will charge it. Is this right? Use the plug from the dock, it goes straight in to the bottom. Do NOT get any third party plugs or docks. USB-C is fickle and a dodgy one could fry your Switch. There are no issues with the official ones.
