Crankcase! I wanted this toy since I see him in the Marvel comic. I was annoyed that he didn't have the masked face though. I love the way the guns break through the windscreen! Autoglass Repair get more business from Crankcase than all the other Decepticons combined. Martin

There were Silhouettes in 1988!
The first time I can remember seeing this done was with the Ewok figures in Return of the Jedi in 1983!

Ewoks?! Wow. That must have been a huge mystery as to what that was a silhouette for.

I don't recall there being any images in the run up so at the point figures started appearing - General Madine & Bike Scout in ..... Feb/March 83 iirc - they were unknowns and a big mystery. www.12back.com/features/cardbacks/cardbacks.phpLook for 65A-ROTJ I'll have to dig out the Jedi Teaser trailer and see if they're in that Oddly they do the same thing with two more Ewoks the next year, but those are two figures released much later that year. Look for Tri-Trilogo at the link above

Triggercons completely passed me by back in the day. wasnt till car boot finds in the mid 90s that I probably got my hands on any of them. Even now non of them seem as interesting as the triggerbots.
Voting Windsweeper... just because.

1998, 2nd BWII catalogue has them for one of Lio Convoy or Galvatron IIRC
Also 3 more sets on the US 88 catalogue!

There was a weird exclusive in the UK with the Triggerbots/cons, where they came with small temporary tattoos of the box art. I dunno if they were John Menzies exclusive, or if other countries got them, I haven't really seen them mentioned elsewhere, so I'm going off my childhood versions. Speaking of, here's my old Dogfight and Windsweeper backing cards, with tattoos to the right [bit hard to see the tattoos, as I never used them so they still have the paper backing]

Week 79: What is the best NEW Autobot Pretender on the 1988 US catalogue?
|
|
|
Post by Grand Moff Muffin on Aug 23, 2019 6:04:29 GMT
Misleading catalogue - the second wave Pretenders were the same size as the first three, weren't they? Groundbreaker and Splashdown are slightly stronger than Sky High (but not as strong as Landmine). Sky High and Splashdown have intelligence 8 (same as Cloudburst and Landmine), Groundbreaker 6. Sky High is slightly faster than the other two, being able to fly, but nowhere near Cloudburst's speed 10. Groundbreaker is slightly tougher than the other two (and equal to Waverider). Splashdown has rank 8, Groundbreaker rank 5, the other four Autobot Pretenders rank 6, though I think Fortress Maximus introduced Landmine as Pretender Group Leader in 'Totalled'. Anyway, Splashdown (function: Naval Commander) is admiral of the Autobot navy, such as it is, outranking Seaspray, Broadside, Waverider, Longtooth, and presumably Seawatch and the Metro Squad hovercraft. Groundbreaker has courage 10, Splashdown 9 (like his naval buddy Waverider), Sky High 8 (like Cloudburst). (Landmine is courage 5 outside his shell.) Groundbreaker has firepower 8 (like Cloudburst), the other two firepower 7 (like Waverider). (Landmine the asteroid miner has firepower 10.) Sky High and Splashdown have skill 8 (like Landmine and Waverider), Groundbreaker 7 (like Cloudburst). None of these three had TFU entries, and they barely appeared in the comics after 'Pretender to the Throne'. Splashdown was in the UK annual story 'The Chain Gang' alongside Cloudburst and Landmine. The other two appeared in the background in 'Guess Who the Mecannibals Are Having For Dinner?' Sky High is also the name of a member of the Autobot Micromaster Air Patrol. Martin

Sky High's rotor blade weapon is not very practical in his bulky Pretender shell with tiny arms. Martin

It seems from Sky High's tech specs that his name is very apt, on account of him being, well, pretty high all the time...

Splashdown for me. First reason being his wonderful sharky shell, the other being that he was the last toy I needed to complete my UK/US G1 collection. Although that should really mean he is my least favourite G1 toy overall.

Hang on, have we voted on the other three before?? Yup, hence why we're not voting on them now because, as we all know, we only vote for each toy ONCE in this poll. It was a long time ago though, as we've been doing 1988 for a little while now: 31/05/2019 Autobot Pretenders tmukhub.proboards.com/post/370663/thread07/06/2019 Decepticon Pretenders tmukhub.proboards.com/post/371388/threadThere is a list in the first post with what we did, a link to the start of that poll and the result with a link to the end. We started 1988 the first week of April, we'll finish it half way through November. Another two weeks and we're onto some Japanese madness which will hopefully break Shockprowl's mind.
