The new Leaders! The irony being that fictionally neither is much of a leader. Magnus is a big red-white-and-blue Optimus-alike piece of misdirection for the introduction of Rodimus Prime, Galvatron is just plain nuts. And both so integral to the UK comic.
I only ever had Galvatron, quite a bit after he was released when there were stacks of them on sale at our local newly-opened Co-op superstore (the first place I ever saw _automatic doors_. So futuristic!). I remember getting him so well!
Easy choice though, he's a sturdy toy with a ton of play value.

Ultra Magnus looks a complete whimp in that advert. Look - it's the new leader of the Autobots and he's being shot!

And Galvatron isn't even using the big gun! From the pose of his right hand it looks like he's wiggling his fingers as he decides which weapon to use on this clear loser, before deciding to try the weaker one.
And all Magnus can do is turn his face away in shame.

I thought it was weird releasing Galvatron in the UK with the function of City Commander, when there was no city in the toy line for him to command. In all the Marvel UK present day comics, neither of them was ever properly established as Leader or as commander of a city. Martin

Galvatron has speed 9. Either he can drive really fast in tank mode, or it's referring to when he's riding around in Cyclonus.
I don't know how to vote on this one.
Reluctant to vote for Magnus as he's not as good as Optimus Prime in terms of the play value of the Combat Deck.
OK, Galvatron it is.

As you said, Grand Moff, Galvatron's speed is odd. But Ultra Magnus is all over the place! Strength a mere 9? Rank 8?!?!

I also dislike the whole 'New Leaders' concept. And no it's not 'cos I'm a G1 fanboy! 'New Leaders' just smacks of commercialism. And and and treating us like we're idiots. We don't need silly O.T.T. tag lines to sell us interesting toys!
I also think they handled Ultra Magnus incorrectly in the comics. Made him too soft, doubting himself all the time
And, you know what?! Why doesn't it go into 'Galvatron is Megatron' in Galvatron's Techspecs?! Huh?!?!

I have decided to vote for...GALVATRON!!!!
I enjoyed shooting people with the laser gun mode back in the day. Great toy. Magnus is good but Galvatron just edges him as a toy.

I've always wanted to know how the bios for these two came about. Like Galavtron's tech spec is completely different to his TFU entry. There is definitely something in the fact that the movie characters were defined by the film and not Budianski. It put a kink in the routine. The tech specs for both make them sound like lieutenants under Prime and Megatron, beefed up to being New Leaders in marketing when the old toys were retired.
There's a parallel continuity in the ether that is potentially more exciting than the real one.

I think Ultra Magnus's tech-specs fit his Marvel UK character well, apart from his function. He's not as strong as Optimus, he was most happy when fighting alongside Optimus on Cybertron, and he didn't have an especially high rank. As for his doubts, you'd have doubts too if you kept having to fight Galvatron again and again.
Galvatron's tech-specs - yeah, if they'd told the truth it would have spoiled the surprise revelation in 'Target: 2006'. "I am Megatron!" Yeah, I know, I read it on your tech-specs in the shop.

Yep I'm going Ultra Magnus. For no other reason than the hours I happily spent driving my other Autobot cars around on him.
Neck and neck again!

There was also the Ladybird Books take on these two - Ultra Magnus taking over when Optimus disappears and Galvatron arriving from the future to take over from Megatron. Almost what could have happened in Target 2006 if things went differently.
I agree about Galvatrons bio is better off not mentioning he was Megatron - I loved being surprised by the revelation in the comic. Also the tech specs then didn't seem to like to say 'this is the same guy as this other guy' perhaps because Hasbro thought that there was the chance less people would buy them as they already had that character. The same is true for Rodimus Prime and Goldbug (that mentions the mind of Bumblebee in this new toy but still alludes to him being someone else).

Yup. A couple of decades before Transformers devolved into having a 'core cast' rather than new stuff all the time!

I also tend to think of Galvatron as a separate character from Megatron. I mean, he IS Megatron, but Megatron from the future.

Toughest choice yet. Immediate reaction was Magnus but I really don't know. Galvatron was one of my favourite Transformers toys when I was a kid.
Help! Someone decide for me.

Never had Magnus, and Galvatron is a great toy, so I vote for him. Plus, finding him is one of my favourite TF memories as a child...
So I was in Morecombe on holiday about 1990 or 1991, and my parents and I popped into the local car boot sale the Sunday we were there. Lo and behold, there was some teenager selling off all his Transformers collection, including both Galvatron and Rodimus Prime. I managed to persuade my folks to let me get both (and Double Dealer too). Best holiday ever. ;-)
