Fiddling with my beautiful new purple one-eyed fun-length, I've found his gun-hose gets in the way! Particularly in Space-brick mode. Any of his extra guns would shoot through his own hose! Plus, you have disconnect it during transformation, which surely means it's fairly superfluous. Now, obviously the Hose of Shockwave is very nostalgic and iconic, and originally had to be there as part of the electronics. But, it occurred to me that, in this day and age-
IT DOESN'T ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE!!!
Surely a super-advanced giant powerful robot wouldn't need an external power hose in order to make his primary weapon work? It would be too much of a weakness! Severing it would surely cause his gun arm to not fire! If it isn't there to power his gun-arm, WHAT IS IT THERE FOR THEN?
Has the severing of it ever featured in fiction?

I imagine Shockwave has it there as a fake weakness. His opponents will be busy focussing on his cable which in reality does nothing at all.
He is a master of logic after all

It provides extra power to his gun arm in story but is just something extra on the toy

It comes into play when he switches his gun to vacuum cleaner setting, and sucks the dust up into his backpack.

Severing it would surely cause his gun arm to not fire! If it isn't there to power his gun-arm, WHAT IS IT THERE FOR THEN? Perhaps it is actually designed to connect to an external power source when he wants to draw on more peak power output than he can normally generate to boost his output. It is actually only attached to power system at one end, the other end sockets into a receiver on his upper-arm just to keep it from flapping all over the place. So when he needs to, he unsnaps it at the shoulder end, connects it into the output on a generator and draws on the extra power... Karl

How many stories show his enemies focusing their attacks on his hose, only for him to laugh at their gullibility before he clobbers them? There was that bit in 'Rock'n'Roll Out' where Bumblebee tried to save Brick Springhorn's concert by throwing an energon cube at Shockwave's hose. And that scene in Robot-Buster where Buster tried to blind Shockwave by throwing sand up his hose. Oh yes, and in 'The Desert Island of Space' Fortress Maximus tried to make him fall into Earth's atmosphere by blasting him in his hose, before thinking better of it and blasting his engines. And of course in 'Out of Time', Circuit-Breaker clearly focused all her anger on the hose. I withdraw my objection. Martin

O-ho. Spot the difference between Action Master Shockwave's box art and the toy itself! WHAT'S GOING ON HERE, THEN??? And (I suppose) Ralph says the only true Shockwave is Action Master Shockwave! Also, how did we let the Shockwave decoy win the Great Decoy Poll? He's useless as a decoy! The Autobots would notice straight away that he had no hose! "Aha! No hose! The Decepticons are trying to fool us with an unconvincing decoy!" Martin

And yet... And yet... The original Shockwave's box art has no hose!!! WHY? Why does the Action Master Shockwave box art have a hose but the original doesn't? AAARRRGGGHHH! Martin

Was there a prototype Action Master Shockwave who had an orange hose when they gave it to the box artist?
Or did the artist MAKE IT UP AS AN ACT OF REBELLION?

Don't let Shockwave shoot you with his relay modulator or kick you in the inductive proximity switches with his data definition translator! tfwiki.net/wiki/Shockwave_(G1)/toys#Generation_1 claims that "Reportedly, early "test market" releases came with a rubber hose that connects from his gun-arm to his back, like the original toy. There are holes in the toy's gun-arm and backpack; the black hoses found in many old G.I. Joe toys can fit in the holes." But this may be fan speculation. Edit: Though I do wonder what "test market" feedback could have resulted in them hurriedly changing their plans and removing the orange hose. Martin

TFU.info disikes people hotlinking their images. It'll appear OK for you because it's in your cache. I've downloaded the image and uploaded it to my flickr account. if you need anything off there again lmk and we'll sort it out.

Shockwave has a hose so that when other Transformers ask him as to why he has it, the clever Shockwave can then ask them why they have noses, mouths and eyes.
Also, if the hose was featured in the Bay 'Wheeljack is blue/Hot Rod is black with no flames' movies then it MUST be important.

Actually, these are so funny I think we really need a separate Action Master power plans appreciation thread. Some of them can be found on websites other than TFU.info. Back to Shockwave, my theory is that the original box artist produced the first image without thinking about how it would fit on the box (all the box art generally going on the right, with the plastic window on the left). So they had to reverse the image (explaining why his gun hand is on the wrong arm) and chop off his hose, so it wouldn't obscure the window. Then I guess they told the box artist to go back and do it again, and they cribbed off the first box and so forgot the hose again. Martin

Does anyone here own, or have owned, an original Shockwave? I don't. I will do one day. When I was a kid I had that mould but it was one of the other versions. It's been so long since I had it I'm not sure what exactly it was. Can't even remember if it was grey or purple.

Yes, that's what I mean. It might have been, could have just been a dodgy knock-off. I'm sure it was purple but I can't remember. All I remember is that when the electronics failed I pretty much destroyed it trying to fix it. Which is why I've always been hesitant about trying to fix Omegatron.

Does anyone here own, or have owned, an original Shockwave? No, but I bought one for a friend. And he did indeed have the rubber hose. (The Shockwave, that is, not the friend.) (But also that.)
