Does Andy still have his collection of Animorphs?
It is his birthday near BIG isn't it? Maybe he wants them back again.

Sold as Transformers. It's all over the packaging.
IIRC the BW Mutants were originally designed for Animorphs.

The Animorphs franchise are not anything to do with TF. Much like Star Wars and Marvel. But the toys are clearly Transformers. They transform, and are marketed under the Transformers brand. Much like Star Wars Transformers and Marvel Transformers.

So... they are Transformers toys, but they are not Cybertronian? What's a Cybertronian? Is Powermaster Optimus Prime, built on Nebulos by Nebulans, programmed from a floppy disk from Earth and binary-bonded to HiQ, a Cybertronian? Are the Special Teams, dreamt up by Buster Witwicky and built on Earth, designed to turn into Earth vehicles from the get-go and most of them never setting foot on Cybertron and having no memory of Cybertron, Cybertronians? Where does the line get drawn? Martin

Is Cybertronian race or place? A human born on Mars would still be a human, but they would be Martian as opposed to Earth... en. ish. An earthling.

I have no idea!
If it says Transformer on the box, that's good enough for me.
In fiction, I would guess that Transformer is the species, and then you have Cybrtronian, Nebulon, Terran and so on as our equivalent to nationality.
Binary bonding makes the taxonomy trickier, but could just be like dual-nationality?
I don't know the fiction behind animorphs, but they are Transformrer toys. Right?

It's easier to say humans are all one species because you can draw family trees between them. Not so easy with robots. A Transformer can be designed and built and even Matrixed by a human. And in the cartoon, you get TFs created without use of either the Matrix or Vector Sigma. What makes the cartoon Dinobots the same 'species' as the Autobots?

Probably only that they were built by Cybertronians. There's no physical conception/birth, but is the metaphorical equivalent allowed?
The Dinobots and Constructicons are annoying in that regard. They need massaging to fit into the continuity. Their brain modules had to have been stored and brought from Cybertron, or in the case of the Dinobots you could argue their limited intelligence is a result of Wheeljack building something that approximated a Transformer without Vector Sigma's help.

Hah! After the Battle Beast thing, I was waiting for this one to come up! The Animorph toys are certainly Transformers toys, but I doubt Mr Applegate set the stories in anything near the Transformers Universe.
Re.what is a Transformer, I always thought that the Transformer race themselves called themselves Cybertronians (or Autobot or Decepticons) and it was the rest of the (non transforming) universe that dubbed them Transformers.

No. They're Pish Hasbro made when they could have been making proper TFs.

Okay, so let's first lets break down what exactly is a "Transformer." Transformers are four things:
• A Brand • A Franchise • A set of characters • and a type of lifeform.
There's not a huge difference between the brand, and the franchise. But there is a difference worth noting. - The Brand is the brand name "Transformers." It is the license. Balls. Clothing. Tertiary toys. Crossover toys that don't use traditional TF characters or settings (Animorphs, Star Wars, Street Fighter).
-The Franchise encompasses everything that we usually think of. All forms of media and "main" toys, going back to the beginning. And includes crossovers that use actual TF characters (GI Joe, Neon Genesis Evangelion) This exists inside of the former.
- Transformer Characters are all characters that exist within the franchise. Sam Witwicky, Isaac Sumdac, Hi-Q, Chip Chase, the Quintessons, the Vok... none of these are transforming robots from cybertron. But they are characters in the franchise, and calling them Transformers in that sense is completely valid. This also includes:
- The type of fictional lifeform that we specifically call "Transformers." Transforming robots of alien origin.
I have personal thoughts that I will add later.

Toph and Phil both make very good points that I was about to make. So I'll make them again.
First of all, remember that if we do consider Animorphs to be proper Transformer, then we must also include the Marvel and Star Wars Crossovers Transformers too as being true Transformers.
But then what is a Transformer? I guess it depends why you're asking the question. If it's simply to do with brand or packaging, then yes, yes all of the above are certainly Transformers. If it's a question of whether or not they're part of the same fictional universe (well, multiverse - damn you, Furman!) then no, they're not. (Until they are, of course.)
The answer is therefore dependent on the full context of question, and the only correct answer is thus: Maybe.
