Well, even though I've never really though much about it, I always assumed they were called 'Sparklabots'. But I guess we have to go with what's on the catalogue. They were never referred to by their group name in the comics, were they? I seem to remember they annoyed me in the comic slightly.

The comics called them Sparkler Minibots, so that is the correct name

The comic has form for being VERY wrong on group names during this period, as our recent discussion on how they changed what Micromasters were called several times has proved!

Comic 30th thread 30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #196 The Flames of Boltax - Part 1: Buster undergoes a harrowing experience as he's forced to test the Realvision system Ratbat intends to use to reveal the contents of Grandslam and Raindance. He plays the data off the cassettes, and with Starscream witnesses Optimus Prime and the Triggerbots travelling to meet Grand Circuitmaster Boltax in Cybertron's past. Prime manages to bypass the Temple of Knowledge's defences, but is watched by Megatron. Elsewhere, Megatron gets a whole page to himself in the A-Z, featuring a uniquely adapted biography incorporating his part in the UK comic stories; Colin and Steve fail to make any kind of impression on the Giggly Sisters; on the letters' page, Hi-Test mis-corrects David P of Ainwick when he asks about who the Micromasters are by saying it's Micro bots and they'll be around next year; and an advert appears for the amazing Every Ready Transformers Powermaster Torch.Â

However..... Well, even though I've never really though much about it, I always assumed they were called 'Sparklabots'. But I guess we have to go with what's on the catalogue. I wouldn't put any stall by what this catalogue says given the number of mistakes. In addition to the Sparkabots Young Matt also had to correct the Decepticon Powermasters. And, in comparison to the 86 and 87 UK catalogues, something is missing! More will follow on later 1988 catalogues

Sparkabots tfwiki.net/wiki/SparkabotBut see notes at the bottom of the pages. Burns may want to think VERY carefully before opening his mouth and setting a precedent that may haunt him later.....

Re. Micromasters - weren't they just called 'Micro transformers' on the first releases in '88? I've never heard them called 'MicroBots' outside of the letters page.

Bob Budiansky is law. If he'd called them Sparkler Mini-bots in his story, that would be definitive in my view.
But he didn't. It was a UK Furman story getting ahead of itself, also mis-spelling Piranacon and wrongly calling Overbite Jawbreaker. (Those were both definitely wrong. Overbite and Piranacon had TFU entries as well as tech-specs.)
So I'm going with the toy name.

To be fair, as Sparkler Minibots was used in the UK comic it is still an official name for them. And as this was the first name they had (as the comic came out just before the toys as far as we were concerned) then there is an argument that this could be their real original name. But the name Sparkler Minibots does sound very lame and not very intimidating. Imagine the scene: "Oh no - it's the vicious Ultra-Mega-Mass-Murdercons! Quickly - send in the Sparkler Minibots to stop them!"
