We just need to know the size of the hard disc in the old laptop to know which portable harddrive to recommend you get. 1TB. -Ralph

Stop panicking! USB is the name of the connection type. A USB memory stick looks like this: A portable USB Harddrive looks like this: You can see they both have a USB plug on the end of them. The harddrives will have higher storage capacity than the sticks. If your old laptop's harddrive is 1TB, we know you don't have more data than 1 Terrabyte to move. So if you get a 1TB portable harddrive you know you're safe moving all your data, and afterwards being able to use the same drive as a backup drive.

The old laptop appears to have died. All I get is the Toshiba logo and a swirling circle.
