Fruits are the seed containing parts of plants. Vegetables are the edible parts of the rest of the plant. Yes, but you try telling Shockprowl a pumpkin is a fruit and there'll be tears before bedtime.

Shockprowl.
Pumpkins. Butternut Squash. Tomatoes. Melons. They're all the same. They're all fruits.

Vegetables are the edible parts of the rest of the plant. I have never heard this theory before. Dictionary says: Vegetable 1. Any member of the plant kingdom; in pl., plants collectively, vegetation. 2. Any cultivated (usu. herbaceous) plant of which any part, esp. the leaves or root, is eaten in savoury dishes, freq. with meat or fish; such a plant prepared for the table. Fruit 1. sing. & (now chiefly) in pl. Vegetable produce in general. Also fruits of the earth, fruits of the ground. 2. sing. & collect. pl. The edible product of a tree, shrub, or other plant, consisting of the seed and its envelope, esp. when sweet, juicy, and pulpy. Also loosely, another sweet juicy part of a plant, as the stalks of rhubarb, eaten similarly. If you use the narrower secondary definitions, (vegetables savoury, fruit sweet), then I guess they are different things, but if you take the broader definition of vegetable (i.e. vegetable = plant) then a fruit is a vegetable. In those definitions the difference is that a vegetable is the plant, the fruit is the product of the plant. The product is the bit with the seeds that allows reproduction - something not essential to the existence of the parent plant itself.
