Was looking at T30 Rattrap, Waspinator and Rhinox yesterday when digging out Skids. They are going to take some beating.
That rat looks like he's trying to pass something out of his arse.

I have been telling myself these last few days that this is a chance to downscale Generations buying - just not do the Beast Wars stuff. Have to see how well that goes...

Ah the problem with TR is that it was half way through the run. I'm beginning to feel a sense of closure now with Kingdom as the list of G1 figures without good Generations representations gets shorter. I'm getting a strong urge to say to myself, lets cut Generations buying right down to special figures and worthwhile exclusives, and focus on G1 instead. Beast Wars is great, but I think the original figures are fine as they are. I don't know if I need another set of them. What will sink that for me is if Bogatan's guess is right and the next trilogy of toy lines kicks off with Armada updates. I wouldn't be able to resist that. Of course next year there's Studio Series 86 to contend with too.

Everyone assuming that Armada etc. will follow on from Beast Wars in Generations - so after the Unicron Trilogy, we should expect Movie updates, then Animated, Prime, RID2015, Cyberverse. After that it would have to Siege, Earthrise and Kingdom updates...
We need something new.

Indeed - these new Beast-Era toys are going to have to try a lot harder than being “super-poseable and well detailed” because that’s just describing the original toys. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what, if any, gimmicks they’ll be adding.
That said, I do like the initial look of that Rattrap, so we’ll see...

Not bad for a Legends size figure. I suppose it'll be more in scale with the others than the T30 one, but really - what is it doing differently?

If that's Legends size those aren't 5mm fists - 3mm?

I think the problem with new figures in Generations is that it is essentially a nostalgia line. If they brought out a whole new set of characters in a new context I'd probably heave a sigh of relief and opt out of buying any of them (would I? I'm not sure...). It would be a huge risk for Hasbro because of the potential sales drop - look at the general backlash that Drift and Windblade got, crusty old fans don't like new faces appearing in their toy line. Cyberverse is the main line for 'new' toys and I've weaned myself off that.

I guess I'm in a minority in that I don't mind new faces in my classics. I pulled out most of the Decepticons I own and there's a couple of new faces there: Fracture, Deadlock, Exhaust and Redwing off the top of my head.

I never saw the T30 one (or Waspinator) so what these might be doing differently is actually being somewhat easier to buy (if wished).

There are enough "new" characters in Armada to freshen up the Generations line but its an old enough line for nostalgia. And unlike BW/BM the toys are similar enough to fit in with the G1 toys more neatly. The only risk is if there are enough fans of it to pick up the slack of any G1 fans dropping out. But that something they have to address at some point or it goes the way of GIJoe.

And, I suspect not incedentally, moving to Armada keeps you an Optimus Prime and Megatron, a Starscream and associated repaints.

Armada debuted 18 years ago in 2002, which is 18 years after 1984. 2002 is also when the Takara TFC reissues began. Imagine getting Armada reissues like that now.

MP1 was 2003-4. Reissues. WST was 2003. Dreamwave Transformers. The Animated series dvd boxsets.
All between 200-2004.
Armada didn't have as big an impact, but it was the first ongoing toyline to reset the story. (RID always being a short term thing) and if theres a moment to re-grab the attention of that lines fans its now while they are in their mid 20s.
Its also the last line that might claim some childhood (stretching the term to include mid to late teens) nostalgia from G1 fans.
And it really does fit the current Generations play pattern so well.

Doesn't look like he'll be popping up in Kingdom, either. I think that, and the lack of Windblade since TR, is more indicative of a switch in direction than anything else we've seen!

There SHOULD have been one in CW: Hot Rod/Blackjack should have been done in yellow as BB
And the Cybertron Version of Hotshot should have been released in yellow as BB just like it's Legend was.

Is that a confirmed should, or just your opinion? Cuz I know that it would make sense for the changes at Hasbro to come into effect now, not halfway through one guys run when they've been so resistant to change before

Should, opinion. Car would have looke good in those colours and would have paired nicely with the red Optimus as the BB Minicon should have done in Armada..... if they hadn't lost the trademark and had to call it Sparkplug!

I think potentially at the moment the difference with Generations continuing to recycle G1 characters is that they're pretty much out of ones to do. I know we say that Generations has always been G1 over and over, but until now it's kind of been okay.
Take Siege Sideswipe - the last appreciable equivalent was 2008 so having a far superior Siege one was okay, he needed doing. But now I don't think there are enough G1 names to redo to make a line, which might be why Warden went Beast Wars with Kingdom. That does suggest that for the next line on something different needs to happen.
There isn't another 'style' to use either - Generations went WfC/FoC just after it almost died completely to restart itself, but the Netflix show doesn't need a completely different set of moulds, so the Siege idea of being Cybertronian modes is about the only other thing I can think of that would allow you to redo all the G1 figures and get away with it. But they blew through that really quickly. What else could they do G1-wise now except start again? If they did I think even the hardcore would say, 'really? but we've just had all these!' For the reasons Bogatan gives, I think Armada is the next logical step. I don't think they'll go forever with Beast Wars, I think they see that as a 'do the main cast' thing.
