Found myself wondering about the various molds in early 'G1' that were repainted/remolded into other characters, and the molds that weren't.
Why were some molds repurposed and not others?
The three Fairladies.
The six jets.
Ratchet/Ironhide is a very distinctive mold to repaint.
Wheeljack is just as distinctive, but wasn't reused.
Skids, not very distinctive, you could argue, but wasn't reused.
Sideswipe was reused, confusing the whole 'brother' thing.
Some remolds make the toys look very different- Inferno/Grapple, Trailbreaker/Hoist. But others are identical apart from their paint- The Fairladies, the Jets, Laserbeak/Buzzsaw, Frenzy/Rumble.
I just wonder if there was any criteria or planning behind it?
(and I'm thinking mainstream western release here, not obscure repaints like evil Wheeljack, or red Tracks)

Good topic.
Laserbeak and Buzzsaw were pretty much identical considering that the only repainted section was obscured by identical weaponry in robot mode.
Does a lot of the Autobot car repaints depend on Diaclone before it I wonder?

So there was no reason not to use Police Sunstreaker mold as another character like Prowl or Red Alert were really.

But what I'm getting at is why did they repaint the ones they did, and not others?
AND- Should they have done characters with different molds? DID THEY GET IT RIGHT?!
....could I be worshipping a Countach Super-charger Police Car Prowl...?

Yeah, Prowl could have easily have been the countach police car and we would have accepted it the same as we do with what we got.

Well, at least we know the reason why Wheeljack didn't get a repaint, since the alternate deco was cigarette themed.

Is there any substantial proof to the rumour that red Tracks was changed to blue last minute so he wasn't confused with the upcoming Hot Rod in the movie that would have been planned at the time?

I never heard that, and wiki doesn't mention it like other similar rumors. But red proto-tracks might have at one point been a decepticon. Or at least the battle scene box art artist had reason to believe it was going to be.

That's a question to ask Hitchens next time you see him. And this isn't proof of anything, but might be responsible for some rumours:

I can't remember where I read it or heard it, but it sticks in my mind. And Hot Rod has Tracks' flame decal in this ad. Maybe it was Paul who I heard it from.
Or have I created my very own Mad Theory!?

I love the voiceover in the UK ads. He always sounds so close to despair.

It's interesting how much of the colour changing involves the colour red: Ironhide, Sunstreaker, Tracks.
Ironhide is the only one of those to get changed TO Red though.....
So was Ironhide colour swapped to avoid being the same colours as Trailbreaker? And did that change then lead to Sunstreaker becoming yellow so he wasn't the same colour as Ironhide?

That sounds right for Ironhide - although black would still suit the character better.
But then Sideswipe went from yellow to red. Or red to yellow to red...it's confusing.

Blown my own mind with this thread... What if we'd only got one version of each mold?!?!
Can't bare the though of loosing Rachet or Ironhide! Maybe Ironhide would have gotten Trailbreaker's mold... Prowl could well have had Sunstreaker's mold, that could have happened! Truck-craine or Fire-engine?!
I've made myself a little mad...

Just going by the 84 cars line up I would do:
Ratchet would keep his mold - Ironhide would work well as a Fire Engine (Inferno). The strange robot mode suits a medic but has never worked for me as Ironhide. The taller fire engine bot would make him seem more like Primes old friend and he would be on a similar scale and make a better bodyguard. The chemicals etc he usues would also fit a fire engine alt mode.
Prowl would keep his mold - Bluestreak could then be the Tracks mold - blue and with guns above his head for his gunner function.
Although trying to decide now if I wouldn't prefer Sideswipe and Sunstreaker to actually be the only recolours of eachother (the Sideswipe mold) which would leave another new mold (Sunstreaker) for some one else.

I might keep ironhide as he is. Skip trailbreaker, and make Ratchet from hoist, instead.
Skip Grapple, Sideswipe, Bluestreak, and Smokescreen.
As for Tracks's color change, i think it's because there were already red cars and trucks (Sideswipe, optimus, cliffjumper, windcharger, inferno). But not single blue autobot.

Mirage was also blue - although he was white too. And I've always thought there was far too much white in the 1984 cars.

Far too much. It makes a display harder work than it should be, just to separate the white guys (Prowl, Jazz, Ratchet, Wheeljack and sort of Mirage) and then also keep recolours of the same toy away from each other.

Hoist and Cosmos from 84/5. After that it's frequently reserved for Tanks.
Trying to think of a green car. There's one in the Movies but apart from that....

Downshift from the Cybertron line - but he's probably not relevant in this thread. Hubcap should have been green!

Hoist, Hound, Cosmos, constructicons (which i count as one given how every construction vehicle had a mandatory green repaint thanks to them). Brawl, springer, skullcruncher, and scorponok are debatable, and I think there were three or four micromasters. One or two actionmasters. And I think that's it for g1. That sounds like a lot until you factor in how many red, white, blue, black, grey, purple, and brown TFs there were along side those. And there's a pretty big jump between brawl and the micromasters. When you factor in all the other lines, like phil said, green is reserved for military and construction vehicles. Green cars are virtually non-existent. It'd be kinda nice to take a mold like ER Sunstreaker or Wheeljack, and give it a nice hunter green redeco.
