We have heard of this before. Perhaps it is now further along the track.

Isn't this going to be a bit similar to the upcoming Netflix thing though?

Sounds like it, as with these things I'll be more interested when it moves from development to production.

The new Netflix show just looks like the latest in the line of cheap animations, just with the latest level of cel shading and grime. Any cinema release is going to look, move and be staged significantly better.

Indeed. Besides, it's not the first time we've had different platforms (cinema and television) telling similar stories.
It's not the first time we've had the same platform (cinema) telling the same stories (Armageddon/Deep Impact) at the same time.
What matters is how they go about it. "WFC" seems to be the same overhyped and underperforming thing we've gotten for "Prime Wars."
Also, in this instance, we don't know what "animated" means. Is it animated like the "live action" Lion King, only they're just not pretending it's live action? Or is it animated like Megamind, or any number of stylized CG animated films? Or are they gonna hand it off to an anime company? Or a direct release traditional animation like the DC animated movies?
