After an absolutely dismal first forty-five, let's hope for an upturn in the second half. I'd like to see life in general taking an early lead, none of this last minute equaliser business and extra time would be disappointing. Penalties can fuck right off. Let's get this year back on track.

Morning All!
Monday: tell me why ...
Sunday went OK, save for someone melting down as church started. He's had trouble all along with us singing in the living. Yes I know most people have problems with me singing full stop....
CMT and sinuses did OK, but probably didn't steam myself enough.
Bit grey and grotty out there this morning, could feel it before I got out of bed. Felt very blocked and gunky round my nose first thing, but less painful round the face. Steaming round one has freed some of that up though. Still feel a tad coldy and achy round the body.
Liz day off today. I think she's considering another research trip for a different possibility for J's end of term meal tomorrow. He quite fancies KFC - the idea was they'd eat it in the car but the popcorn chicken is tempting me....
Pray I cope OK physically - sinuses and related effects plus CMT - and we stay protected from the virus.
Hope you're all OK, stay safe and well out there!

Bad day for Burns. Dr Quack says right hand pain is osteoarthritis. I already have problems with my other hand but my right hand was my good one and I am right handed. Rather distressed.

Interview this week, not done a proper one of these for several years so this will be fun. Started some courses to keep my mind active in the unemployment downtime. Hoping to hear back from some recruiters at some point this week.

Morning All!
It's Tuesday....
Monday.... Hmm. Generally it went OK, Liz had a good day off going out for lunch and to see her parents. The Sinuses were a bit fun all day in varying places - literally the pain was moving about, round my nose on minute and then the outside of my cheeks the next - and to varying degrees. My tummy has decided to join in the fun too and to top it off the CMT was challenged by the weather. ALL of that, plus a couple of tinsy tiny things in the day brought my head down somewhat. Was Game Over very early evening :-(
Tuesday then is probably going to be a quieter day for me. Aiming to do church prayer meeting via zoom tonight if I'm match fit. It's Jonathan's official last day of term today - there's something big he's very close to finishing which he's going to push on with for a few more days - so he's going out for a takeaway with Liz at Lunch which is worrying me slightly.
Pray it goes OK, I do better physically and mentally today and we all stay protected from the virus.
Hope you're all safe & well out there.

I now have to wait until the 16th to have it confirmed by an x-ray but it is 99% certain anyway and then on the waiting list for a steroid injection if paracetamol and ibuprofren do nothing. I know they do nothing as I already tried them but Dr Quack must be humoured for a fortnight. I was better in the evening but I lost the plot yesterday morning. -Ralph

Good work. That was quick given the circumstances. There are a lot of IT jobs about, the problem will be the amount of people trying to get them. This one is literally everything I was doing at the last place but, not going to get ahead of myself with it.

Regarding jobs, I have only found one job in the last month to apply for. Almost all vacancies I could usually apply for now mandate staff must drive and own a car (I can do neither). These are jobs that I have done and always been able to do but Covid has changed things. My living costs drop somewhat after August but I'll still need a job. The prospect of going on to UC fills me with fear as the Government has re-introduced sanctions this week, which is sheer madness. I am still furloughed for now but that can't go on forever and even if I get back the job is only funded until December anyway! My physical health has worsened so some jobs I could have done care wise are now beyond me. I look ok but haven't had a pain-free day in 5 years.
Looking forward to my next OU course in September. Maybe that will help make me more sellable.

I'm almost surprised about that. Always seemed the only way they could get away with such a brutal system is because till you've been on it you just don't see how it can be that bad.
With potentially large numbers of people about to lose jobs and experience it for the first time I half expected they'd keep a softly softly approach in place for a while longer.

You would think so but the Government has decided the crisis is over even though over a hundred people are dying every day and over 9 million of us are on the furlough scheme.

Morning All! Wednesday July 1st, half way through the year.
Tuesday: better than Monday physically and mentally, though not without it's challenges. Jonathan loved his trip out for KFC for lunch for last official day of school - we always stop end of June. He's going to push on with a couple of things to round them off rather than carry over till September. Liz also got to have her sister visit in the garden.
Church Home Group tonight via Zoom. Not sure what the plan for the rest of the day is yet.
Pray the body in general and the sinuses in particular continue to improve and we stay safe from the virus.
Hope you're all safe and well out there!

First day back at work (or rather in the study downstairs) today after week and a half paternity leave and three weeks of furlough that my Bosses very kindly bent over backwards to arrange to help with looking after Naomi. Not sure we'd have coped without it frankly these last few weeks.

Morning All!
Thursday. Nope, still not got the hang of them ;-)
Weds went OK I think, though tired and with a wearing head mental health wise from early evening. Blazing headache too which didn't help and Tummy was unhappy late last night too.
On this particular Thursday ..... shopping due this morning, less worried than I have been. Think that's about it for the day.
Pray I cope OK, Sinuses, head, tummy and CMT improve.

My local Caffe Nero has reopened, yay! Iced latte and warm apricot croissant in the park for breakfast, and a cappucino cake in the fridge to enjoy at lunchtime. Should have savoured those pastries more while I had them. Turns out that was my last Caffe Nero apricot croissant, and my second-to-last cappucino cake. Their supplier apparently went bust during lockdown and they were just using up what pastries they still had in the freezer from before lockdown. Annoying for Martin, far more serious from those who've lost their jobs. Given the roaring trade done by the local baker near me that stayed open for hot drinks and freshly baked pastries throughout lockdown, and the massive loyal customer base they have built up as a result of keeping going, being so quick from the get-go to introduce counter screens, contactless payment only, one person in the shop at a time, etc., I do wonder if some of the big coffee chains and bakers like Greggs were overzealous in shutting so many local branches and furloughing staff for so long, when the local demand for such little luxuries clearly remained. I suspect that if branch decisions were made individually and locally rather than centrally, more would have kept going and be in a better state now. But I could be wrong. Martin

All the independent and chain bakers and cafes closed around here and have only begun reopening recently. At the time we all had next to no idea about what we were dealing with or how to mitigate for it. Overall I think they made the right decisions. Jobs and businesses ultimately can be replaced, lives cannot.

It could be argued though that keeping safe businesses open (and these one-customer-in-shop-at-a-time-staff-protected-by-screens-you-touch-it-you-bought-it businesses are safer than supermarkets) save lives by giving local people a little relief and low-risk luxury that takes the edge off the lockdown as it drags on, and increases their tolerance for sticking to the stay-local rules.

At the time lockdown was imposed we were at the peak so it was absolutely right for everywhere to close. People have lost their jobs due to the cack-handed ways the Government has handled the pandemic. I miss bakeries and local cafes (and the cinema) quite a lot but I am not going near them as infection and death rates are too high. Also, as we have seen with Leicester, the Government does not impose swift local lockdowns where they are hot spots: it waits 11 days before doing anything!
As for luxuries, my spending on toys has increased during lockdown and have grabbed stuff I usually wouldn't be able to afford as I haven't work travel to pay for, can't go to Scotland for physio/see parents and can't go on day trips, cafes etc. That has helped my mood a bit on some days and some stuff pre-ordered for next few months. We've had two takeways (pizza hut), have done the Costa drive-through twice and the McDonalds and KFC drive-throughs once apiece. Really enjoyed each treat loads each time as it is now a rarity.
Unfortunately, I know the local hospital so well now that when I was in the other day I made a bee-line for their Costa. Screamed a bit when two shortbreads and two medium drinks came to £10.90! Nice though.
When it is safe to do so I look forward to local pastries in a cafe in the area I am moving to.

Costa in town is still shut, not had once since March. That was a weekly highlight for me. I do miss my regular habit of sitting in a Costa or other cafe to have a hot chocolate and read. On Super Saturday I will not be going anywhere near any shops or pubs for my own safety. Opening the pubs on a Saturday is sheer idiocy!!! -Ralph

I secured all necessary shopping on the way home from work tonight, no need to go out this weekend. I was disappointed to find though finally getting back into the clothing section in M&S for the first time that they were out of socks on the size and style I wanted. Been waiting on that for weeks!
