From an image that was posted by Takara Tomy yesterday, people are currently reckoning that there's a new MP Starscream in the works. news.tfw2005.com/2020/07/06/new-masterpiece-starscream-incoming-414083I mean why not? They've done every other character as a Masterpiece, there are literally none others to mine from the original 1984 line-up, so why not do the see- strike planes again? This is sarcasm, of course. Actually... I wouldn't mind a slight re-engineering of the seek- attack jet mold. The second version of the mold fixed a lot of the issues with the first one, but even so there are still the issues of the wings not always staying on properly, and poseability's still not great. So a well-re-engineered update wouldn't necessarily be unwelcome. HOWEVER. Given Takara's recent design philosophy, I'm not sure I'll be interested in this one at all. It'll be painfully Sunbow accurate, cost over 300 quid, and have dubious quality. So I'm sure this'll be exciting for some people, but most likely an easy pass for me. Until they do a + version, which has toy/early-Marvel-UK-accurate shades. Then I'll be in trouble.

Yeah, why wouldn't they? £300 plus another five easy repaints, three conehead remoulds... Money in the bank.

MP-3 is perfect as is, colours included. I'm not even keen on the attached guns of the MP-11 mold.
Also - that silhouette - skinny legs are an abomination. What is it with current MP designers and not being able to get legs right?

I'll stick with acquiring the ER Starscream when online shops get it back in stock. This will save me £300 and will not fall apart.

Excellent news! Hopefully the detail will be kept to a nice minimum on this one and be wonderfully Sunbow accurate. It would be great if they use fake wings in robot mode as well as a fake cockpit too, just to get it right. Just have the actual jet mode fold up on his back. I also really hope it comes with every silly thing he ever used in the cartoon. Optimus had that Starscream head and shoulders from when he was cosplayed so Starcream should come with an Optimus onesie armour shell. Sure it would add another £80 to the £300 price but all worth it as it's such a defining moment of Transformers lore. Also some seagull droppings detail, can of invisibility spray and his deadly slingshot please. And tree Rumble.

I'm hoping to be able to pass on this one, unless they do Sunstorm. Which is fine as I don't yet have the MP11 version.

This was inevitable, which is why I didn't chase the Maketoys ones too hard. In the intervening time Masterpiece has gone off the rails though so this will have to be spectacular and not ridiculous money for me to bite. The current MP11 crew aren't brilliant alongside newer figures and I would like a trio with an aesthetic that fits, but... if Hound was £120 these are easily going to be £170-200 each, so meh. Maybe not.

Oh - and he needs to include the big oversized snake that attacks him in that other episode too...

What about that one thing he had in that other episode? Yes - that too! (I'm sure there are even more ridiculous things from the cartoon that I haven't thought of that he will actually include)

He's got to have a gun mode Megatron, a damaged ankle from the Movie (with smoke!), full coronation set, a bomb to drop on secret spyplanes, probably something to do with the Combaticons...

My interest in the MP line has dropped off a cliff. It peaked somewhere around the Datsuns (which remain marvelous) then started going more rapidly downhill with the shift towards Sunbow-accuracy coupled with escalating prices, and with WFC (esp. Earthrise) it feels almost redundant. Little masterpieces which are affordable and fun. Grapple even supercedes the MP with its simpler transformation which allows for an actual rotating crane!
Seriously thinking of ditching most of the MPs I have.

Yes I very much share that opinion, Galvajim. They got too Sunbow, and way too expensive. They look good, but not good enough.

I agree with Jim. The price on them got silly and when you can get very similar products in the Generations line at a fraction of a cost it's hard to get excited by them. I did find myself tempted by Spinout, but Generations has a new Sunstreaker soon so the idea of a red one of them as Spinout (possibly in Selects) for about £80 less isn't so far fetched.
The only MP I still want to get is Shockwave MP29+ (I have regualr MP29) though the price on it is silly.
The problem with going full-Sunbow (which is not in itself a bad idea) is that when the show models (mostly made of single blocks of colour without much detail) are translated more literally into 3d models they can look bland and not worth it at MP prices. We expect detail, etc on toys.

I agree, Sunbow accuracy in itself isn't an objectively bad thing, but it does lead to under-detailing as you say, and over-engineering of the transformation. There's no doubt that Grapple transformation (and Ironhide, too) is clever, but I don't find it much fun and it leads to massive compromises. I've been finding Earthrise manages this balance better, though it's undoubtedly a Sunbow line.
That said I'd love for a line that takes more inspiration from the toys than the cartoon, Brawn being the first character to come to mind (followed by Ratchet / Ironhide).
I think the only MPs I have that I'd _definitely_ keep would be:
Shockwave Hot Rod MP10 Prime Grimlock Blue Bluestreak

True that. After Sunstreaker I've not really bothered with any MP releases. Inferno was the big let down for me, he's just so bland and boxy, and as the prices crept up with more and more redundant accessories I just kinda... moved on.
Hound I thought I'd be all over, but...

MP10 and MP17 are the pinnacle of the line. Perfect blend of G1, ultimate update, and Sunbow.

Never owned the Prime so I don't know about him but yeah, Prowl and Sideswipe were the peak of what that ethos should be, I think.
Soundwave too, he was chonky fun.

I guess it's all subjective, because next to the Tracks mold, I feel sideswipe is the worst MP mold I own.

The MP's I have are first release Shockwave, Grimlock, Golden Lagoon Prime and Road Rage. I'm fine with just having them from the line.
I would have been all over the MP44 Optimus if it hadn't cost around £250.

I have the Angry Bot version so maybe I'm clouded. Why don't you like it? That's the version I have, and the only reason it makes me happy. It lacks any of the beautiful subtle curves of the original toy. It's just a set of undefined blocks, that's ugly. It's an awkward robot that's not particularly stable, either. If I remember correctly, the transformation is overly complicated and not fun. As for Tracks (i have Roadrage), the fact there is absolutely nothing that holds the head up except for the barest of tension on a pinned hinge absolutely ruins the entire mold. Masterpiece is now a meaningless word that has just come to mean "oversized and overly expensive."

I really liked Sideswipe at the time, but must admit I haven't got him out in years.
I have never put Hot Rod back in his box, nor put Grimlock away (though I didn't keep the packaging). The only others I have got out again regularly have been MP10, Shockwave and Soundwave.
I guess opened MPs haven't kept much value, but that leaves me with potentially a lot to get rid of!

I guess I've gone the other way. I haven't bought an MP since Sunstreaker but I buy everything 84/85 Fans Toys put out. Their figures are what Takara should be doing - premium quality, beautiful finish, Sunbow styled but not to the extreme.

I've picked up some 3P Minibots that scratch the itch nicely. And a G2 Drag Strip who is lush. Odd how they can hit the mark when the official releases faff around so much.

Er. -Ralph Now they're usually better QC, and better designed, for literally half the cost. One could argue that the price comes from licenses, but then that doesn't explain Arcee, or the BWMPs.
