I had some fun on the call last night with Scourge, whose lightpipe is so good you could see it over Zoom
Which are your favourite lightpipe toys?
And which colours work best for the eyes?

Universe Cyclonus is the best I own. The red really shows out with him.

Talon - one of the first to have it. Stand him on a window sill on a sunny-sh day and tap his head and his eyes flash like Galvatron, without the need for batteries or silly noises.

I love a good light-pipe. Best one I've seen for a while is Siege Shockwave.

Light shades work best. It doesn't matter what color.
I miss this gimmick.

Siege Shockwave is easily the best I've seen. Even when he's standing in a shaded spot his eye still glows, which is a fantastic effect.
Given I'd dropped out of collecting Transformers by G2, I first encountered lightpiping on a couple of Jawa figures, and whilst the idea made sense I really didn't like the implementation, because there very obvious patches of light-pipe material on their hoods. I was thus a bit prejudiced against it when I found it in Transformers, but given the odd, non-organic shapes of Transformer heads it really isn't so noticeable, and the extra light in their eyes just gives them a little more life. I really wish that it would come back as standard.

I remember those Jawas - may have a few of them in my Sandcrawler in my loft.
Astonished me they didn't put the pipe more out of sight on the back!

Phil's experiments with light piping last night led me to check this today: If his purple was a shade more toy, he'd be perfect. I wonder if at some point they'll do that. The repaint options on him are pretty limited. A couple from me which look MUCH more vivid in real life

I realised yesterday what you meant by this - I picked up Shockwave with my finger over his head and it blocked the light. His light pipe exits on the top of his head rather than the back. I then spent the next five minutes making him talk with his eye flashing in sync by tapping his head, even though Shockwave's eye doesn't do that in animated media. It was like Dalek ears flashing when they talk. Amazing.

Glowing eyes while talking makes no sense! No sense! -Ralph Non breathing robots moving their lips to pronounce words makes even less sense. And don't get me started on Optimus Primes faceplate wiggling when he talks...

Glowing eyes while talking makes no sense! No sense! -Ralph No, absolutely. It was just making me laugh because the effect was so strong it really was like switching an LED off and on.

Actually, in Shockwave's case it kind of does because like Daleks, he has no way to signify he is speaking because nothing moves. Daleks know who's talking because their ears flash, so Shockwave's eye *could*, like Wheeljack's... Wheeljack's... whatever those are.

I thought Shockwave's eye DID flash in the cartoon when he spoke.

I thought Shockwave's eye DID flash in the cartoon when he spoke. You're right, it does most of the time. Not to begin with and it gets forgotten in a few, but yes, it does. That must be why I was getting so excited about it. I shall make his eye flash now, just to annoy Ralph.

Besides, in the comic it positively explodes at one point doesn't it. Waves of energy erupt from it. I'm sure I had that as an avatar at one point.

Is that a flash because he's speaking, or is it flaring because of the intensity/emotion involved?

I love eyes and things flashing when they talk - makes them seem more like some sort of alien robot. In fact, before I saw the cartoon, I always imagined Optimus Primes eyes flashing as he spoke (think the toy & Ladybird books). I never thought to imagine that his face was a mask over a mouth. I mean why? I've got used to it now, but at first I found it amusing that it moved like a mask when he spoke in Sunbow. I assumed it was just artistic licence just for the cartoon.

I know the thing in the middle of Shockwave's face is an eye because it says so in the comic panel in Pinwig's post of about half an hour ago, but who made that story decision originally? Did they ever consider making it his nose?
He could have helped guide Santa's sleigh...
