You know, I never seen the Headmaster animals as actually being animals. More representations of them. I've always been fine with Weirdwolf being a giant mechanical looking wolf. Exactly. That's how I see the Dinobots I suppose - as machines that are based on different Dinosaurs. The same with Predacons, Seacons and Spy Cassettes (can you imagine what Squawkbox would look like if we took into account the size difference between a bird and a gorilla?) I have less issues with mammals like the predacons, because they're upsized no matter what. I would prefer that they stay reasonably consistent within themselves, though. Take Predaking out of the factor, and I would want all five in different size classes. Divebomb- legend (decent wings would push him up to deluxe though). The cats- deluxe, and the herbivores- voyager. Also... Squawktalk is supposedly based on a condor, I believe? There was a condor bigger than a gorilla.

The 2003 Dinobots were clearly armada as they were released at the same time with the same packaging style, but of course the entire wiki article must bow to vector prime

Funny thing, I assigned them to RiD from the start. There were RiD releases in Armada formatted packaging. That was just the style of packaging they had, and it would have cost money to remake RiD, or new packaging.

Where does it say they all turn into full-grown animals?
Maybe Sludge was modelled on a juvenile apatosaurus.

I'm sorry, but when was it cannon that Sludge had to be bigger than the others? They were all the same size in the comics, toys & cartoons and in my mind they are only robot approximations of dinosaurs - not in disguise as the real things. This is a really good question! From my limited observations I'd say the larger proportion of fandom see Sludge as larger than his chums these days. But yes indeed, he never used to be! When did that switch occur...?

Happy to see size difference in new iterations of the Dinobots but have always seen the originals as being the same size.

Where does it say they all turn into full-grown animals? Maybe Sludge was modelled on a juvenile apatosaurus. In all the threads I've endured over the years on How Important Scale Is, this is the first time I've seen this point and I love it! Sludge is also either - COMICS - modelled on a Savage Land Dinosaur, where who knows what digressionary evoloution conditions exists and by a computer that's faulty enough to be modelling non mechanical forms and mapping them onto 5 pre existing robots of about the same size
- CARTOON - modelled by alien robots who've recently come into contact with the concept of dinosaurs and have had one trip to the museum as their research
Both circumstances easily explain away any discrepancy in Dinobot/Dinosaur size to me. And indeed some of the other oddities highlighted to us several times over the years. Even if they don't, it's obvious to me in both cases that what they've built isn't meant to be an authentic dinosaur, ala BW Megatron and Dinobot, they're both robotic approximations. The cartoon, the Marvel comics and the toys, which are driven by the need for a similar size and price point, are the three things that define the Dinobots to me, and I suspect most of us feel the same. And in all of those the Dinobot robots are about the same size. If we're talking about modelling the Dinosaur aspect of the Dinobots more accurately, then surely, as well as their size, loosing their mechanical appearance has to come into the argument too? And if you loose the silver/grey robotic look then they're not really your 1985 Dinobots anymore and that's part of the draw here. I think part of the problem I have with Nick's image above is that the designs have strayed a bit too far off robot mode model for my liking. Bandai had a line of clear coloured dinosaurs where the bones were prominent back c2000 and it's reminding me of that! (For what it's worth I think it would be interesting to do accurate sized & look Dinosaurs, but I don't think we'll see that this side of a BW revival) You can argue the toss as to whether the robots should be Deluxe, Voyager or Whatever but for me this is driven by the original toy robots and their 1980s fictional forms being generally depicted as slightly larger than the Autobot cars. By that criteria Deluxe is too small, but the Voyagers look too big. Can we have the Mega size back please? Having said that, I think the POTP Deluxe Dinobots are excellent! To me their problem is Voyager Grimlock is oversized compared to the rest. (I understand WHY he's a Voyager) And he also has some odd design choices made to incorporte the gimmick whereas the deluxe Dinobots wouldn't be hugely different without it: effectively the Combiner Connector is occupying the space for the Dianaut's cockpit. A deluxe sized Grimlock looking to adhere to the original design like Swoop & Slag do would be interesting to see.

No, no, the juvenile thing is the best! I want a story where the Dinobots get time-displaced and Sludge gets "adopted" by a maternal Apatosaurus to everyone's amusement now.

(I'm leaving Swoop out, as adding a pterosaur to the mix only adds complexity to the discussion, and I'll admit I don't know nearly as much about them)
For me, Dinosaurs will always come first. G1 Grimlock's toy was actually a pretty decent tyrannosaurus, from our understanding of it at the time. Unlike the other three dinosaurs, it was made to be able to stand horizontal, and I think that was fully intentional. Sure, other grimlocks you can force to do that with (MP), but the way they're designed it doesn't look right, or good. But the original toy was designed when it was just starting to get out into the public that dinosaurs didn't drag their tails. His neck is jointed in a way that allows him to stand correctly. In a time when articulation existed only as part of the transformation, this stands out (because the articulation doesn't add anything to his transformation) His tail's curve is very slight. It's almost straight. In fact, he doesn't even really stand upright in the way pop culture were always depicted. Even his upright stance is much more akin to a real T. Rex, over a "t-rex." His head is a fair boxy robotic approximation of a tyrannosaur head, and hits a lot of the right marks- It's got a distinctive tyrannosaur shape. It's pretty huge in contrast to the rest of his body. • Slag- it's really hard to screw up a triceratops. I've seen it, but it's really hard. • Sludge- is more problematic for a number of reasons. Science didn't actually think this about sauropods anymore at the time he was designed, but it took Jurassic Park to start to shake it out of the public. But even still, short raises neck, and short dragging tail are the only two main things really wrong. • Snarl is the one who's the biggest problem. In the fifties, they had to break stegosaur skeletons to get them in that shape, because their bones couldn't achieve that anatomy.
The original toys, cartoons, and comics are what they are. But that doesn't mean every dinobot toy from here to eternity needs to look like it was taken exclusively from a 1950s schoolbook. It's 2017. Michael Bay gave us better dinosaurs, and that's just not right.

I quite like robot dinosaurs. The Dinobots do not look like real dinosaurs. The clue was in them being all metal and gold and silver. They are robot warriors from outer space.
Real dinosaur toys are available. I was very fond of the dinosaurs I got from Kelvingrove Museum when I was a nipper.
