Been pondering this afternoon, which of the smallest scale Transformers designed to work alongside bigger ones in the same range are the most effective for their size? I was thinking about
G1 Targetmasters G1 Micromasters Minicons T30 Legend companions POTP Primemasters WFC Micromasters WFC Battlemasters/Rampmasters

The G1 Targetmasters were flawed because they couldn't sit inside the vehicles when in humanoid form. They could only stand alongside them. They had to be in gun mode to connect to the larger robot, and they had to be in gun mode to connect to the vehicle. And there was also the elephant in the room of why having a gun that turns into a little man makes it a better gun. Best small G1 TFs relative to large G1 TFs: - The cassettes, because they were to scale with the larger object that they interact with. - The Headmaster Nebulans, because they were designed to be in humanoid form when their partner is in disguise form. I see what you means about the opposites nature of the headmasters, that works as a package, I just can't get past the fact that, say, Highbrow and Gort can never talk face to face.

You forgot Titanmasters, Human Alliance, and Binaltech Asterisk.
Despite the scale being a bit off, and most of the transformers being mediocre to terrible, HA I think does it the best, with Titanmasters coming up next.
Titanmasters beat the snot out of Primemasters, IMO, because Titanmasters actually interact with other toys. They sit in their vehicles, become anyone's head, and some have triplechanging accessories that become weapons, beasts, and vehicles. They're also a really decent size for regular scale TFs. Primemasters get shoved into a combiner's fist, while their wrong character "armor" turns into a weapon that's just a dude being held by his feet and a stick on his head with "it's a weapon because we say so" logic.

Titanmasters now feels like a golden era and I regret not going all-in on the line.

Not forgot, more not what I was thinking. As with Headmasters, it's hard to see Titanmasters as a partner for a Transformer when they can't work in conjunction with each other in robot mode. They're more part of the same thing, but that's just a personal opinion. Out and out humans I think are a different thing; a Targetmaster might be a Nebulan, but it still transforms to interact with a Transformer.
I was thinking about which have the best interactivity or purpose. Titanmasters are a good shout. It also made me realise the partners with the T30 figures do hold their own alongside the established ranges because they have a weapon, vehicle and robot mode.

I remember thinking that if Powermaster Nebulans could fit in the vehicle modes, then they would have been an overall improvement on the Head/Targetmasters.
I would love a proper G1/Generations Human Alliance line though...

Yeah, I really liked the little Titanmasters. They were great fun to fiddle with as deskbots, too. I remember getting my first Power of the Primes figure and using it as a deskbot and being disappointed because there wasn't the same level of playability. Sure, they could combine with other figures, but I found that it just wasn't the same. And covering Fort Max or Trypticon in Titanmasters really made them feel like cities. Definitely a high-point of the line for recent years. And I do get what Pinwig was originally getting at - I just can't think past Titanmasters now. I will say I was definitely disappointed with how Battlemasters worked out in the end. Aside from the Targetmasters and a couple of shields and a hammer they really didn't seem to have thought out how that play pattern was going to work. Which is a shame, since there was certainly some potential there. But it wasn't there in the end.

Well it's certainly NOT the disgustingly freakish Headmasters you people seem to enjoy so much...
I think the Minions get my vote. Cassettes a close second but I think of them as separate to their interactivementi. Minions though do stuff and transform. Pretty neat as gimmicks go.

Problem with minions is the colour schemes are a bit samey. Lot of yellow.

You know it just clicked on me that this was about small companion TFs in general, and not about scaled human companions (the "masters"). As such I kinda missed the inclusion of the minicons and OG micromasters.
In light of that, the OG Minicons beat everything before or since. The most cross compatibility, they do everything the micromasters, targetmasters, and headmasters did, and then some. Interesting transformations, combiners, weapons, just all kinds of cool stuff.
