Hasbro needs to keep certain characters in circulation to help strengthen copyrights and trademarks. Most of their major characters have had dozens of unique designs across Transformers 40 year history, sometimes as reimaginings of the original character, sometimes as an entirely new character that's just recycling the name. But the last decade or so, Hasbro has fallen into just continually updating the design that appeared within the first three years, which has contributed to increasing burnout in collectors all over the world. This poll, which I shall attempt to update Saturday Night/Sunday Morning, will ask the question, "Which version do you want to see next?" The cut off is the beginning of Siege until now. If a version of this design has appeared in "War for Cybertron," "Legacy," and "Studio Series '84," it will be discluded from the poll. Past Polls- Optimus PrimeSo, this year we got Laser Optimus. Last year S1 Optimus Primal. 2020, we got G1. In 2019, we got Cybertron (sorta). And in 2018, Optimal Optimus. (And before that was Laser Prime and Powermaster, and before that was G1) While it feels like it's been an endless slew of G1 over and over, Hasbro has been doing pretty well with giving us a new major optimus design every year, for the last five years. And early rumblings are that this is a trend that will continue next year. So what Optimus should be next on the slate? You can choose up to three! I excluded everything older than 2018, Masterpiece, and Gen Selects.

Star Convoy was done by Selects. OK it could have been done better.
I think the BIG ones off that list are RiD and Armada

A proper Power Master, combining with trailer, would be interesting.
Or.... G1! Let's start all over again!!!!

Aye, he was. But not many were very happy with him, and he also wasn't a general release like all the others have been. If this list had been Megatrons, I'd have included G2 because we've yet to get a general release of one. Or even one intended to be G2 (unlike Optimus). I included Actionmaster because if I hadn't, I know the first post would have been calling me out for not including it, though I've not the slightest idea how to do such a toy!
I'm still jonesing for the quintessential Powermaster Optimus with an Ultra Magnus retool, but between TR and ER Optimi, I'm good to let that one go for a few more years.
I do feel like the "major" Optimus toy doesn't need to be a leader every year. Gobot gives us a good opportunity for a deluxe, while Lio Convoy, BM, and Transmetal offers other voyagers.
Going back to AM Optimus, what's the best way to do it? -Retool of Legacy Laser Optimus with a new trailer, and alt mode intended to be the actionmaster vehicle cab? -A transforming deluxe intended to look like the actionmaster robot, with AM accessories? -A commander class with the above deluxe, but a full vehicle playset? -Something I haven't thought of?

RiD or Armada all the way. I'd be so much more into generations at the moment if they'd gone Armada instead of Prime.

Well the obvious choice is Machine Wars. Or it WOULD BE if it were on the poll. *gives Toph a Paddington stare* But really, he'd be just another truck guy (albeit with slightly different colours). So in lieu of Machine Wars being available, I've picked G2 Gobot, Lio Convoy, and Fire Convoy - simply because they all do something different. And different would be nice. So annoying that they still have that bloody Armada Prime prototype and its not being released for the 20th annivarsary. Unfortunately a recent post from Mark confirms that that's a non-transforming prototype. Which means they didn't do all the work on it.

Unfortunately a recent post from Mark confirms that that's a non-transforming prototype. Which means they didn't do all the work on it. Convenient that. I don't think what we saw was non-transforming. I think they're just trying to find a plausible sounding excuse to brush it under the carpet because we won't shut up about it. Even if it was non-transforming, the intention had clearly been for a toy that was 90% ready otherwise it wouldn't have been on display. Annoying that. I wonder if the Fans Hobby one is still around for a decent price.

Should I do a "Next Megatron" thread/poll?
Or should we turn this into a generic weekly "The Next ____" poll? And cycle through those big names Hasbro likes to keep in circulation with lots of different designs that Hasbro only chooses one design for?

Indeed not. Although to my mind it still counts as a G1 Optimus - just presented in a different medium.

Optimus Prime Poll finished! Made some mistakes, so this one will get a do-over eventually: This week's poll is Megatron! I included G2 tank because we have yet to get a proper actual update. I was going to skip regular G1 but I realized that we've only gotten updates that turn into silver tanks that has his chest and maybe his fusion cannon. I discluded anything thing that turns into a silver tank with a G1 robot mode (Cyberverse) As always, you can choose up to three. I have some questions about going forward, I'll ask in a bit.

I thought this was two pages, what happened?
Anyway, when rewriting the opening post I realized I need to set up stricter guidelines for what the cut off for "recent" is, and need a consensus. It didn't matter for Megatron since aside from two Galvatrons (which do or do not count as megatron depending on who you ask), a BW Megatron, and a GS Super Megatron, they've all been silver tank G1s, or G2 colored repaints there of.
I was considering the cut off be the start of Siege where everything from that and after is "recent" and everthing before is fair game. But updates of things that came out in Titans Return and even Combiner Wars feels strongly like "we just got this guy." Though I also know that CW is no longer recent.
So, what counts as a recent update? Should the cut off be Combiner Wars, or Siege?

I think there was a lot of corner cutting and compromises in CW and I know if better versions of some of those folks came out I'd be interested, but TR was where I'm happy with what we've got. So I'd split it there, I guess.

Looking back, I think TR was the sweet spot between them being toys with play features while also being designed to keep collectors happy. Since then, play features have dropped away with more of a focus of them being robot action figures like Marvel Legends, etc and aimed squarely at collectors.

I think you got it right with Siege, 'cos that's when the 'scale' change happened. And Urzu puts it well with the 'corner-cutting' in Combiner Wars. Although I struggle to trust Urzu these days because of his obvious love of Rodimus 'Prime'.
Also, in terms of Megatron, I would like a G1 robot, from an earth tank, not a cybertrony tank (G1 colours, not G2 green).
