Because the dinobots are not the primary intention of these molds. The japanese dinoforce are, which, being repaints of the pretender monsters, have a configuration that puts the t-rex shelled dude as a leg.

As mentioned above, the positioning of Slag as the top half of the Torso and Sludge as the bottom does rather make you think that a Dinoking/Dinoforce repaint is very much in the designers minds. And whenever you do Dinoking/Dinoforce you automatically think Monstructor/Pretender Monsters So lets assume ALL the Dinobots end up in the position on the combiner which the Dinoforce member with the same beast mode does. This in turn tells you something about the sixth Dinobot needed to form this combiner. It is worth noting we have been this way before in POTP, assuming a Dinobot combiner would become Dinoking: Swoop/Cutthroat had an alternate Wildfly head and Snarl was shown with Doryu's gun! I think we did see a couple, but I think also that was probably some sort of afterthought to milk a little bit more cash out of the molds, which ultimately they didn't go with since the focus of Generations of changed to WFC. These seem to fit with the current planned-multiple-uses philosophy, so I'd wager that they designed these with Dinoking/Monstructor in mind first, then decided to do Dinobots first since those were more popular characters. Which'll be amusing if we don't see the reuse/originally intended use if these ones don't sell well... |

I guess that Skar is being added into the ranks of the Dinobots since they need a sixth to complete the gestalt mode, given that they need two to make the torso. It's a shame it's not Paddles, but I guess that wouldn't have fit the Dinoking repaint. But it's also a shame that they didn't use Slash again.

I actually doubt they would, but I do genuinely wonder if these molds would look better if they were the generic "these are monsters because we say so" that were the originals, instead of very badly trying to be both dinosaurs and look like the G1 Dinobots.

Maybe, maybe not. I'd tend towards not, just because at least knowing what the alt-modes are meant to be helps to see them as something more than indistinct blobs - I think if they were generic monsters they'd just all look... well, generic and indistinguishable.
Of the two new reveals, Scarr I'm not fussed about, but Swoop is very annoying - he actually looks good! I don't want to get a Swoop on his own, though, since he'll have no team to keep him company, and I don't want to get the whole team at all either (still waiting for that Dinoforce). This is quite vexing.
