GPS ALERT. I am disturbed by the increasing return of gold plastic. Have toy companies learned nothing?? -Ralph The yellow on "Slag"*? Yeah I can see why that might be pushing the button. But there's no swirl or metallic element to that plastic which are the things that frequently make them vulnerable. * SOMEWHERE I have a who is who and what table I must dig out and update. Aiming to do some comparisons but I'm having difficulty sourcing the precise photos I want or at least In was at 2am :-(

Take the Dinobot baggage off these toys, and I like it so much more.
The extra feet and weapons certainly help!

I never realized before today only swoop and snarl have elbows.
My opinion of these molds was already on the floor, and now it's even lower.

I really think I need the diddy dinos in this guise. This just looks like a fun set to play with.
(cue everyone else who already has the Dinobot versions telling me I'm wrong...)

Swoop is the only one that would have tempted me to buy it. Swoop is also the only one I never found.
Honestly, that fact alone makes me glad I never committed to the core dinobots.
Aside from them being horrible looking toys with a bad combined mode.

No you need to be more scathing than that. They're rubbish! Sludge's thighs aren't even connected to his shins with knees! Stumpy little horrible things! Skar is just a box with legs and not even a proper Dinobot! Euuurgh! LIES! Filthy things! Better?

So I got Dinoking the other day, and I have very complicated feelings about this.
It shouldn't work for me, but it does. But, that is due to Dinoforce, and does not extend to the Dinobots.
I find these guys charming. Individually, they suck. Badly. They're not good toys. But as a set, they work when they shouldn't. It's like as a whole, they sort of make each others weak points less noticeable.
They look good combined, too. Which is rare for a combiner.
Everyone keeps going on and on about "this is who these molds were intended to be!" But it really isn't. They were designed to be the Dinobots, with Dinoforce as the repaint. Without the new heads, they actually look nothing like Dinoforce. The dino modes don't even look like the pretender shells. The only similarity is Hasbro decided to make the combined mode have the same layout as Dinoking, with the addition of a new ankylosaur to complete the team. The individual robots and beasts are 100% exclusively G1 Dinobots. So, no. Dinoking is barely more than an afterthought.
However, the new heads, and decoes go a pretty long way to help hide the Dinobot resemblance. It also helps that I have absolutely zero attachment to Dinoforce, to the point where the only thing I knew about them was they were the pretender monsters with new shells. Never even bothered to look them up in the wiki before I got this set. (Actually loving their personalities, and I'd really dig an ongoing Dinoforce comic written by James Roberts, if he actually sticks to their canon personalities)
But yeah, I'm actually loving this set, and their individual flaws aren't as bad when taken as a whole. And these represent something that doesn't exist in my collection, where as I have multiple sets of Dinobots that do everything much better. Even if they're too small, they at least fill a void.
However, as I've said, my attachment to this set does not extend to the Dinobots. Had I bought the Dinobots first? Each one would be judged on an individual level, and they would not work to cover each others flaws. Had I gotten the Dinobots first, I would have absolutely hated them, not even completed the team (Well, I couldn't cause I never found Swoop, the only one I actively searched for), and I absolutely would not have bought this set.
So yeah. I think Dinoforce is a very charming set. The colors, the new heads, how they work together, it all works to overcome their massive individual flaws.

I'll admit that when I saw they were up for preorder on HLJ I was tempted to pick up Dinoforce. But that is residual fondness for their role in Transformers: Victory not any particular attraction to this toy. But as I already have subtitled episodes of Victory just a room away, and the Legacy toy doesn't actually contain the bits I like - their personality and comic relief...I decided I could live without. It does look like a much nicer set on a visual level though.
