Hmmm. As I look back on the 2023 haul I spot some trends other than the obvious one of failing miserably at buying less. The purchases that have given me most joy have been those where I have reacquired toys previously lost due to Real Life or the modern ones that are more quirky/2-packs or fit into a definite theme.

The Toxitron sub-line was the most exciting of the new toys because it was like in Olden Days when collecting a line felt cohesive. I hadn't bothered to collect a whole wave/line in years. We now have a random selection (Legacy/Legacy Evolution) that just feels like lots of lines mashed together and lacks its own identity. Not necessarily a bad thing, but less fun and with less of an impetus to collect, so bought more older stuff instead.

Surprised by how few I bought from the kiddy lines until I remembered how sparse Earthspark has been. Not many toys released and very hard to find on or offline. A big contrast from Cyberverse. I bought loads of that.

Yes! absolutely. Generations doesn't feel like a collection these days. I hate the expression mixed bag, but that's exactly what it is. A jumble of disconnected bits. I think in my case though I've gone He-Man instead of back into past TF lines.

Combo of discount price plus one of those random "vouchers" they put on Amazon made Bombshell more appealing after my indifference to Kickback. Snarl and Brawn from the Pulse cyber week thing, and Bulkhead from the clearance. I was just two releases (him and Springer) from being able to put together the Iconic Wreckers hammer and somehow couldn't resist at that price.

Only a tiny proportion of my list is current toys, I really kind of went off Generations / Legacy this year, mostly waiting for sale prices on the few bits and pieces I wanted.

I think I kind of realised there were lots of Transformers that I'd wanted in the past but couldn't get at the time for whatever reason which felt more worth spending the money catching up on than the latest G1-with-knees-AND-ankle-tilts releases. The FOMO craziness of Earthrise has long since receded.

This is still my biggest year ever as a collector for Transformers though by at least 50%.

I think the only modern toys I paid full price for were the ones in the Toxitron sub-line.

I hope to buy a lot less in 2024 (50 items max) and to concentrate on older stuff. We'll see how that goes!

I could not give a toss about ankle pivots. Bring back firing missiles! Action features! Lights and sounds!
