The COWARDS! "Laser Cycle" my arse - that's Laser Cycle *Jazz* to you, Hasbro! There's already a Jazz in the same wave though. Though I'd have given the two unnamed ones (vaporwave sideswipe and orange jazz) new names ala Cloudcover, and had the white cycle be Jazz Well if they'd not wanted two Jazzes in the same wave then they shouldn't have put two Jazzes in the same wave. Simple. ;-) But aye, naming the orange Jazz something else might have made more sense. Still, whatever, I think I shall refer to the bike one as "Jazzercycle" from now on. |

Those are the labels applied in the book which identify the moulds.
We don't know what the original drawings say, if anything.
We do know Hasbro is wavering between same character repaints and repaints as new characters at this time.
So yes, they could very much be Sideswipe and Mirage
But the colours used for both, and the mould (lambo) and deco (race car) both suggest other existing characters to me.

That isn't how G2 worked, though.
Sideswipe wouldn't have been sunstreaker because he was given a similar deco.
G2 Sunstreaker would have been from the G1 mold under two options (that depend on it's wave):
1. The deco would have been unchanged (ala Inferno, but may or may not include new stickers ala Jazz)
2. He would have a reversed deco (ala Sideswipe) or a new unrelated deco (ala Mirage) because there's too much yellow in the line.
Or the name would have been applied to a random new mold that looks nothing like him (General Optimus/Sgt Hound, atv Megatron, Lasercycle Jazz/Soundwave).
It's almost certain that Mirage would have been Mirage.
And it's likely that "Jazz" and "Sideswipe" would have been released as same character repaints (the Dinobots are the precedent here, with each one getting two additional colorschemes). Although it's still not out of the question they'd have been new characters.
Though I think it's a higher probability the unreleased seeker decos would have been new characters while these would have remained Sideswipe, Jazz, and Greymon Grimlock (who would have been the anchor for the Sludge/swoop wave)
Although I'm not saying he shouldn't be your G2 Sunstreaker! It's just that I love speculating about the unused G2 stuff, based on what they actually did. There's a logic in G2 that generally goes unseen.
I'm renaming "Sideswipe" and "Jazz," but I'm hunting for the perfect names for both. Leaning towards Vaporwave, Sunset, or Sunbeam for Sideswipe.

Yes, that's how it worked out, but there's lots of indications of the designer's intentions being different in G2. The Laser Cycle redecos you mention both are colours reminiscent of the characters. The Autoroller Redecos I suspect were intended to be the other way round. The BLEEP Up that is the Cyberjets has been discussed ad nauseum - it would appear at some point the names & factions were swapped between the waves.
By the time these toys hit the shelves - US 94 - there'd been a lot less yellow around over the toyline with the yellow Constructicons having been phased out for their orange successors, which I think just leaves Onslaught and tiger stripe Grimlock?
Having the Sideswipe as Sunstreaker does involve some colour swapping as it stands, the G1's black becoming blue green. I can't get away from the Lambo form and can't think of a good reason to plonk that deco and illustration on Sideswipe.... but I can for Sunstreaker. Likewise there aren't many green and pink transformers previously and that the most obvious one is a crocodile when "Mirage" is wearing those colours with the deco on his arms & legs seems too much of a coincidence

If we assume of all of Phils Mad Theories that Sideswipe and Sunstreaker getting swapped is the most likely, then yellow Sideswipe may just be a designers nod to the switch.
And just as equally they could have planned to call him Sunstreaker as a long over due correction.
Or Phils just mad.
I do agree with him on Gen Prime and Sgt Hound though.

The thing I'm finding with these Toxitron releases is that mostly I don't care for them individually (Sideswipe and the yet-to-be-revealed Grimlock aside, probably) but find them super-appealing as a group.
Which is a bit dangerous!

Then M decided to be facetious.... so I decided to respond by going all in with as mad as I could.

If they're the same colours, they're the same toy, as M was trying to insinuate.
But we already know the names and factions were swapped between the to sets of Cyberjets - see previous discussions
So Hooligan actually is G2 Jetfire. And if Toxitron Jazz is Hooligan then Toxitron Jazz is G2 Jetfire.
Pretty simple really
