I do like the mini-soundwave, that is a cute touch. The briefcase full of paper currency is good too.
Looking at the 2012 Joe line-up there does seem to be a distinct "Ninja" theme building up in the line.
Actually it is looking like quite a nice line, I might actually be tempted by some of it to be honest.

Whilst I was down in Birmingham I picked up the Gi Joe: Renegades version of Scarlett from FP. Then she wouldn't left me leave the shop without going back to rescue Snake Eyes. I've learned not to argue with volatile women armed with sharp objects so I acquiessed to her very reasonable request...
They are both quite nice figures - they do a good job of catching the sense of the shows look, and they've got some nice detailing. I think they compare quite favourable with the ROC figures I have.
What does amuse me is that there has obviously been some sort of rethink partway through the design process in terms of their equipment. It looks like they started out thinking that they had the same dispensation to give folks real-world firearms that they had on the movie line... only to have to rethink it at some late stage. The end result is that Snake Eyes has a Mac-10 with a large block of plastic hanging down under the barrel, and Scarlett has a small semiautomatic pistol (looks very Glock-ish, with that very square design) that has a sort of foregrip glommed onto it right at the front of the barrel). It doesn't do anything to make them look like anything other than real weapons with random gubbins attached - and to make it more amusing it is apparently fine for Snake Eyes to have a pair of swords as long as they aren't shiny, and for Scarlett to tote around a fair-sized hunting crossbow. A slight double standard methinks!
That aside (and thanks to ROC I am swimming in spare weapons if it really bothered me) they are nice figures and I would have been tempted to pick up some more to be honest (except there was no Tunnel Rat or Storm Shadow that I could see in Brum)

Reminds of the young readers book IDW put out a few years ago. The characters couldn't have guns but were still allowed to have big swords, which was ludicrous.

Yesterday, FP London had the latest 30th anniversary figures in and I got myself a Law and Order. The only one they were getting low on was the Zombie Viper, and he really doesn't look all that great in person. I can only assume the popularity is linked with this zombie obsession that has permeated mainstream culture in the last decade or so (will it never die?!?).
Lifeline was tempting, but Law and Order was an easy win. From his filecard:

I finally got round to opening the $4 Renegades figures I padded my Seacons order out with in December. Scarlett is really great, a wonder of posability. I like the Cobra Trooper design and Tunnel Rat is neat though he has a lot of unstowable and tiny accessories. Ripcord is just kind of ... there.
Hasbro have been doing a great job with the POC and 30th / Renegades figures, I hope Retaliation doesn't derail things too much.

Oh wow, that seems like a mess-up of the first degree! So the entire movie line will presumably debut without a movie, retailers would have already ordered it expecting a movie to support, and by the time the actual movie it out it will seem dead? |

Stumbled across a couple of cheap Joes this weekend. Agent Helix and Paris Pursuit Baroness. Wouldn't have picked them up at full price, but at 3.99 I figured why not.
Agent Helix was apparently created for a comic one-shot and in honesty she does seem to have "unique special snowflake" written all over her. Daft two-tone grey hair, silly grey and black outfit with 90's style pockets and straps, daft weapons even for a Joe (two generic automatic pistols with ACOG sights on the top - you can do that, you can attach them to anything with a Pittcairny rail but on pistols it is usually a sign of someone caring about the Tacti-cool rather than practicality - and a (cancelled) H&K G11 prototype. I'll let them off with the latter - Gi Joe has a bloke with a manportable laser so I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as far as actually making caseless ammunition viable goes...). Her official backstory is even dafter and just confirms her as belonging firmly in the Mary Sue Squad. Mostly bought because she was cheap and I was in a Joe purchasing mood. I'd not have, and indeed didn't, even think about buying Helix at full price but four quid is my marginal point for Joes.
Paris Pursuit Baroness I bought for two reasons - there aren't enough long-coat wearing action figures in the world or in my collection, and because she will serve as a weapons donor for my Renegades Snake Eyes and other inappropriately armed Joes. Two H&K MP7's and a pair of rifles mean there will be plenty of gear to go around. Actually, I sprung for two of the figure, mostly to have plenty of gear to distribute amongst other figures. I'm only planning on keeping one of the actual Baroness'. I don't recall seeing this figure in the general release, if I had I would probably have picked it up instead of the "Attack on the Pit" version, so it is nice to snag it cheaper.

Oh, very nice! Crimson Guard and Night Viper are what I was really hoping they'd bring out with the movie stuff being pushed back, and the Eel's big ol' boat o' weapons looks great. Not so sure about the Eel figure itself though, the classic design is so good.
EDIT: further reading indicates they aren't due until Spring 2013. Oh well.

There are definitely some nice toys there. I like the Flint and Lady Jaye, and some of the daft Cobra Ninjas are entertainingly silly. I can see 2013 being a year I by more than the average number of Joes. Karl |
