It's somewhat of a mystery to me right now as to why I am sober. I am, however, getting high as a kite on copious amounts of caffeine, for reasons that escape me. Well, it gives me something to do.

You may now call me Nick B.Sc (hons).
I won two prizes for excellence in the field of environmental chemistry- the ICI Nobel Enterprises Award and the Oswald Robertson award. They're both all any new graduate could hope for- a bright mark on the CV and a cheque. That's Auto Assembly covered then, and I think the first round is on me afterwards!

What's good? Nick passing with flying colours or the promise of him buying the first round?

Well-deserved those are. Well deserved indeed. My week starts with me not really being entirely recharged after the previous fortnight. Not perhaps the best way to start a week at work where we are a bit shorthanded, but that is the way it goes at least. Apparently we have a DVD presentation on how to use a fire extinguisher at our staff meeting on Wednesday. Why do I have this half-expectation in my mind that it is going to start with a voice declaring "You may know me from such safety promoting videos as "Fire Blankets, the soft and foldable line of defence" and "Smoke Alarms: Alarming you for your safety"? I recall a visit from a fire officer at a previous workplace. When it came to discussing fire extinguishers, his sage advice was not to bother, but to run away as fast as possible and dial 999 instead. The point was that in the average time it takes for a general mumber of the public (ie someone not used to using fire equipment) to locate and use an extinguisher, most fires are already beyond the timeframe in which they are small enough to be put out by the type of extinguisher workplaces carry. You have at the very most 30 seconds from a fire starting before using an extinguisher is utterly pointless. Many people are killed by fires because of this as they try to fight a fire with equipment that can't possibly do the job. Extinguishers are mostly provided for insurance purposes and/or to make people feel better.
It was sobering advice and is nailed into my memory.

Looking at our office extinguishers, I would agree that they are there for peoples peace of mind rather than as practical fire-fighting devices (like most offices we could do with the balance being tipped more than it is towards Carbon Dioxide or dry-powder extinguishers). I'll be honest, if there is a fire in my office I stand by the plan of evacuating and letting the fire brigade get on with saving what they can of the building - I'm not hanging around to fight a fire, any more than I would stand and fight against a bloke with a flick-knife.
I know the limits of my skills, and I know the circumstances in which exceeding them can get me badly hurt.

I recall the fire officer bloke remarking on how common it was for folk to try to fight a fire rather than run away, especially at workplaces and/or in situations where they would not have been in danger unless they tried to fight a fire. It was something that never failed to surprise him.

Fire extinguishers are just there to help you escape if the fire is blocking your path. Otherwise, don't use 'em.
Well done, Nick!

A fantastic long weekend of booze, rock 'n' roll and transvestites (no, not me) in Manchester has given way to a spirit-crushing first day back. Jobs, eh?

Fire extingushers exsist in workplaces due to a law. If a company fails to install fire extinguishers in their workplace they can be liable to prosecution and/or the closure of their company. As people have already mentioned they are not there to put out the fire but merely to use as a means of escape (whether that includes throwing one at the fire door to break it open I don't know).

I got a nice surprise this afternoon. One of my colleagues made a comment about "finishing up Thursday because I'm on leave next week", which I couldn't initially work out - after all, if you are on leave _next_ week, then surely you would be finishing up on Friday?
Checking the big board in our kitchen in passing, I discovered that we apparently have public holiday days coming on Friday and next Monday. I had completely forgotten about them, so it came as a nice surprise.
Very welcome too - I feel like I could do with some time off. I've used up a proportion of my annual leave entitlement for the year, but as yet I haven't actually had much actual "vacation time" so to speak. It would be nice to have some time off to actually do enjoyable things.

There's only a month to go til AA2008 and already I'm having surreal dreams about the event. Last Night I dreamed of turning up there, drinking a couple of pints and then having a look around all of the stalls. There was only one thing that caught my eye however and that was a box of cereals!!! I brought it and then went home!
People say that dreams are visions of the future. I bloody well hope this isn't one of them!

That's harsh, Mark. I don't know what to say except I hope they give you a good severance package and an equally good reference.
I had an interview at SEPA today. I thought it was tomorrow up until about 3 hours before it began. Had to rush off to the local print shop to photocopy my qualifications, passport as proof of residence, bank statement as proof of address, arse as proof I'm not a cyborg etc then chuck on my suit and go. It was nerve wracking and I ummed and stammered through it like a complete pillock. Then I had to do 10 pipettings to show that I was capable of reproducible work in the lab while ABSOLUTELY BURSTING for a piss. Nothing like carefully drawing up and pouring out 10 water samples in a syringe to take your mind off peeing. No sir.

Enjoy the holiday, Karla!
Martin- nope, this place is a mere ten minutes up the road by one bus that stops at the end of my street. It's about two miles and downhill all the way home so I could walk it when it's not raining. Also they have lots of bang-up-to-date equipment and a five month contract (which this is) would give me worthwhile experience in operating it. In other words it would be an ideal start to my career and I'm doubly miffed that I acted like a stuttering lemon throughout.
