I was supposed to be finishing off some art but I got distracted by an excel based football management game and couldn't stop till my yeovil team won the premiership.

Did another 4.5 km today at lunchtime at the advice of a trainer in the place. I was a bit tuckered by the end of it, but not bad.
One thing that struck me was how incredibly lonely the gym seemed. There are loads of people there, but they don't talk to each other. They just get on their machines and run nowhere with their headphones in listening to music and watching the built-in telly, their heads never turning to one side or the other. Also, the place is filled with mirrors but the way the machines are arranged you can see everyone else in them but not yourself, which I found oddly disquieting. A woman started up on the machine next to mine and didn't have headphones, so I said hello and quickly got the impression that chatting at the treadmills is sociologically equivalent to chatting at the urinals i.e. for good friends only.

I'm not into fitness myself. I think the last time I went to the gym was about ten years ago when an unemployment training course involved all of us layabouts going to a local leisure centre one day. We did a spot of indoor abseiling on one of those wall thingy's that was on Gladiators, I lost my bottle halfway up the wall and never visited a gym since. These days I get knackered just watching the London Marathon on TV!

I stand ready for the challenge of ryhyming week.
In other news, by 8.30pm I had finally finished Draft 1 of the current essay of doom. I felt good, even though I knew I had only scratched the surface and some chunks really needed re-written. So I made a quick-back up minus the transcript and quotes to check the word-count. Length needs to be 4000-4500 words.
'5870' said the word count. 'Fuck!' was my congruent response.

I've had a very hectic working week so far - a lot of late evenings in the office. Worth it in terms of the amount of work I am getting through, but it has really eaten up my free time.
I was supposed to be doing some writing this evening but instead decided to take the time off and play some "Civilisation". For some reason I mainly enjoy the early part of Civilisation - when I'm building my nation up towards the industrial revolution. It starts to feel too much like work once you pass that point.
Glad to hear that the training is going well for the run Nick. Actually, thinking of training I should probably get in training for rhyming week shouldn't I?

Next week, Ralph.
My project report is going nowhere. As usual I had bags of time and I've pissed it all away. Got to get the head down over this weekend!

Hub rhyming week 2008 begins a week on Monday, folks. Start flexing those rhyming muscles! That would be week commencing 10 March. Wouldn't want to start a week early... If we started a week earlier every year, then after 52 years we would have had a total of 53 rhyming weeks, which is quite excessive. I don't think poor Nick could stand that. Martin the considerate

Working the 29th is a bollocks.
Plus i have the flu so I'm heading home early, and it's pissing rain over here.
On the plus side, I got asked to write for Metalworks magazine, so I got cheered up rightly.

I'm barely working today. :-)
One Fuel Cell, a bit of data and a bit of teststand fettling. Nice and easy. I leave at 4pm, for Portsmouth.
Did I mention I've had the best week in a long while. I think I have got my head a bit more sorted out.
I love me I do.
Elliott.

Someone interestingly pointed out the fact that temps/contractors get paid for the hours they work on 29th Feb., while permanent employees effectively work the day for free.
Unless you count the day as being taken into account in your overall salalry.
At least Ralph has one extra day in the year to get the necessary counselling hours.

And I am grateful for it.
As I achieved draft 1 of current essay of doom last night, I can take tonight off before plunging into draft 2 tomorrow. I have some lovely ginger wine made by my dad, cake and curry and plan to watch some tosh. Fab.

Shift not off to best start, if you know what I mean. Only two day shifts left then three off. Haven't seen Piglet since Thursday early AM, so looking forward to qiving her fat bits a squeeze tonight and having a coupla cold beers- not on 'till 12 noon tmw. Had a power cut last night, right in the middle of that prog 'bout Lucas and Walliams. It was kinda romantic 'n' all, though, with the candles!

Well, just back from picking out my spectacles and I feel much lighter (to the tune of £140 lighter). Fortunately Boots have a two for the price of one thing on their frames, and my sister had sent me up a voucher for £20 off - otherwise my wallet would have been even lighter.
I never knew that selecting glasses would be so difficult - finding something that looked ok on my face was an excruciating process. Fortunately I was able to reject out of hand the big round ones that really did make me look like Max from Macross. (And although they had a pair I didn't even contemplate the ones that looked like David Tennant's Doctor specs.
Settled for a couple of pairs that look like they are going to suit me reasonably well. Now I just have to wait a few days for them to be ready.

Oh God. My brain has turned into blancmange. Been redrfating essay of doom since 9am non-stop (it's close to 4pm), trying to get the fucker edited down to the required word-length. I was in tears when draft 3 came in and was still 600 words over. Just got there with draft 4 a minute ago and printed off all 36 pages of it. I don't want to look at that bastard ever again.
I'm looking at the world through a Ralph-shaped hole. So tired. Sleep deprivation probably hasn't helped.
I shall reward myself with a drink and some cartoons tonight, I think.
Eeeeerrrrgh.

Its always bugged me how people born on the 29th February celebrate their birthday. Do they celebrate it on the 28th Feb, the 1st March or when the date next comes around?

The increasingly common incidences of loud and fucking annoying noise from neighbours in this block merely redoubles my efforts to get a decent job this year and move out. It's a fucking nightclub tonight. And again, there goes my plan for an early night and catching up on much-needed sleep.

Man, you have some trouble in that flat of yours, Doc'. Hope it eased down eventually.
Last shift for Shockprowl. Been a busy run, lots kicking off. Had a good play with Piglet last nt and this am b4 work. She's so clever, buying her Mummy a card, chocolates and a gardening book! She's started to sing more now. I'm ashamed to say I can't remember the name of the particular piece of music, but it's the classics piece played over the docking scene in Earth orbit in 2001. Piglet holds my hand and stands on my feet and we 'dance', I hum this tune as we 'dance'. And now Piglet has started singing the same tune! As well as singing "Tinkle tinkle wonder star wonder tinkle star". So cute!!!! If she gets any cuter I may just explode!

Martin "Hi Dad, these are my friends from school." "Oh hello Piglet and friends!" "Dad! Stop calling me Piglet, I'm 15!" (I actually don't call it to her face anymore, now that she repeats every thing we say! Gotta be carefull! I said "Oh God" to something the other night, and it was "Oh Goh oh Goh" for the next half hour!)

Week 9 ended rather well really. I was able to have a sleep in until half-past eight this morning, which was rather welcome. Then I got up and went for a walk for a couple of hours along the canals near here. Discovered in the process that the Eider ducks I had seen a while back weren't just lost ones passing through. We seem to have a couple of breeding pairs settling in - unusual species to see in this neck of the woods.
Then a quiet afternoon was had doing a bit of cleaning of the kitchen, and then I realised that here were some DVD's kicking around I hadn't checked out the commentaries on - so whilst I pottered around in the living room I stuck those on.
Very agreeable way to spend the day.
Sorry to hear about thy headache Ralph. Hope it lifts soon.
