Cheers for the link. I only have a smattering of the issues left from back in the day so great to see it on-line as the odds of a reprint seem (sadly) rather slim. Loved the strip from when it first appeared in Secret Wars (UK) through to the sadly curtailed end in Spider-Man and Zoids. Silverman in particular scared the hell out of me! And Redhorn and Kraak Prince of Darkness (If I remember the name right) were great
Never really got into the toys but the comic strip made a very strong impression on me. It's what springs immediately to mind when I hear or read the name: Zoids.
The annual is a good read and does tend to pop up a lot on ebay for buttons and is worth a buy.

I've got a lot of time for the UK "Zoids" run. Given that it was a random toy tie-in it is surprisingly well written - and very dark in places for a kids comic. It has some very nice story arcs - the Black Zoid story, the story of a trio of Cosmozoids searching for the legendary Zoid afterlife are amongst the highlights.
Well worth a read for those who haven't already had the pleasure.

Loved the Zoids tales back in the day.
A comic I really should get round to reacquiring on Ebay.

Yeah, I really need to find my box of them to check what issues I still need to pick up. But do get that Annual if nothing else - of similar quality to the early TF annuals.

Reading through the full run of strips on the website. Ah, brings back memories. Fairly solid from the start of the run in Secret Wars UK: the first strip setting up the premise, characters and future story seeds in 4 pages. Ah yes.

Question: which Marvel UK Secret Wars issues featured Zoids and was that material reprinted in its entirety in the first Zoids Collected Comics? From memory, the Zoids strip ran for 8 issues before transferring to Spider-Man and Zoids. IIRC it started with the first full-cover weekly issue which memory tells me was #19 with Zoidzilla toy pic on the cover. Don't recall if the run was reprinted in Collected Comics #1. It's been 20 years since I saw it! EDIT: Some googling has the Secret Wars UK run as #19-26. -Ralph

Thank you both. The reason for these questions is, I have Secret Wars 1-19, which I plan to read soon. I am considering whether to buy the rest of the UK run, the US issues or the trades. I am also interested in reading the UK back up strips, though mainly the Zoids strip. (I have the full Spider-Man and Zoids run and CC1, which I was planning to read after Secret Wars.)
Hmm... 19-26. That sounds like too much for a single Collected Comics. I know there was a second, which I don't think I have. I shall have to do some more research.

There were four Collected Comics for Zoids. As for contents, no idea after all this time.
Secret Wars UK is worth continuing with, at least up until #31. Some nice original cover art and a few decent back-up strips. After which it switches to Secret Wars II and your mileage may vary (though I keep meaning to pick them up). IIRC it was cancelled before finishing the story and the last part of SW II was printed elsewhere. I think it may have been the last few issues of Spider-Man and Zoids, actually, though the memory may cheat.
Secret Wars UK was the first comic I ever bought. I loved it.

Was allowed a secondary comic each week alongside Transformers, so the random pairing of Spiderman & Zoids was my other helping of Marvel action.
S&Z was also the first and only Spiderman stuff I read in comic strip form during the 80's. I learned a lot about Spidey and his background origins etc through these reprints. The only Spidey stuff prior I saw was the Amazing Friends cartoon on the BBC. The black costume stuff was great!
I used to wonder whether the comic should have been called Zoids & Spiderman to match the lineup order of the strips.
The stuff with Silverman certainly stuck out and the revelation that one of the protagonists was also an android was creepy. It seemed like there was no stopping Silverman with a back-up form for everytime he got took down.

One thing that puzzles me is 'who' was the Zoid - when Red Horn for example got destroyed in one storyline his 'Mind Rider' Android survived and I got the impression it was he who was Red Horn as he spoke as Red Horn would i.e. plotting, planning etc and the Zoid per se is essentially a vehicle...If the Zoid machines had individual names and personalities what was the need for Mind Riders? Anyone know?

They both are the Zoid, exist as one, but when one is destroyed the other can carry on.
Much more obvious in the superb 2000s cartoon series. If you've not seen it hunt it down.

Funnily enough, I recently finally completed then read my set of Chaotic Century manga reprints. It starts off almost identically to the cartoon but soon goes off in a radically different direction, which I was surprised at.
One of these days, I'll start re-reading my Marvel Zoids.

Did The Namer ever elaborate on that too? Silverman was like Ian Holm's Ash - this became more apparent when it was revealed 'The Company' aka The Cybersol Corporation had wanted Silverman to bring back a live Zoid and see its capabilities in action...I wonder if anyone ever tried to make a Black Zoid custom? Found this though: www.zoidstar.bloodforthebaron.com/12/index.html

I remember the letters column being quite amusing. One letter in particular had a kid complaining that his brother keeps trying to pull his hair out with Tank Power Zoid. I had one of those, and they certainly were'nt head or carpet friendly. ===KEN

I had no idea there were plans for a Zoids monthly, but share your irritation. It was an amazing comic and it's frustrating that there hasn't been a collected edition or continuation of this storyline.
I loved the motorised Zoids toys released in the 80s, though can only shake my head at the number of small pieces nowadays. The average lifespan of the smaller toys was probably measured only in weeks.
