Playing Badminton last night for the first time in nearly two months and I've only gone and thrown my back out.
It's less painful sitting in a chair with a rigid back, walking and standing and lying down are not comfortable at all. Apologies to Martin, Phil and Gav I was going to mail your mags out today but after walking into town to get suitably rigid envelopes my back isn't up to the short journey to my local post office. I will send them tomorrow.

First day off since last Thursday! Woo!
Congratulations on the job, Mark! Ken, good luck with the exam. Andy- your situation sounds nasty. I shall channel for your swift recovery along with Ken's exam mojo. Ralph, you might want to lay off on the Diaclone ads for a while. Watch some Headmasters instead. You don't want to oversaturate your brain.
Meanwhile, I'm applying for a couple more jobs at SEPA up in East Kilbride today. Wish me luck!

Good luck, Nick!
Andy - I can really sympathise, since I had the same 3 or 4 years back when I slipped on an icy pavement and hurt my neck/back. Spent a whole night sitting in an armchair with a firm, high back - it was the only position I could tolerate.
Oh, having a bath also relieved the pain.
You'll be miserable for a day or two then OK, though it's hard to imagine that far ahead.

Last night's shower was how shall we say.. a challenge. Did a similar thing with my back (at badminton) a few years ago now and it was worse then. Just trying to move about as much as possible to stop my back seizing up. Popping painkillers onlu before bed to try and help me sleep. Andy

A marked improvement on my back as today has worn on, however, due to the way I've been walking I've only gone and hurt my ankle. Balls. I'm just waiting for an arm to drop off or something now!

What a week. The good news for me is the rate that my shoulder has healed. I've been able to feel it improve even from hour to hour. My range of movement is already nearly as good as it was at its worst before the op, but with less pain.
The bad. The plan was that the bank holiday weekend would be used to clear up the loft and amongst other things get my computer set up out of the way where I would have the space to and quiet to start teaching myself some software I need to learn before I go on a course in November. Then on Wednesday the guy my parents had go to replace the flat roof of the conservatory and put on a pointed one called to say he'd be coming on Thursday. This was after hearing nothing for about 4 weeks. Apparently the roof had been ready for 10 days but they didnt think we needed any advance warning. So in other words they had a gap and wanted/needed some quick cash.
Initially it was all "Oh it'll only take one day", then it was two then they had to come back on Saturday. Both Thursday and Friday nights when they left the roof was still not up but they didnt bother to cover the hole even though we still had furniture in and electric sockets and lights(we'd only had a few hours to clear and been told it didnt need to be completely empty, plus my brother was out, I couldn't do anything because of my shoulder and Mum has a bad back. Thankfully we have good neighbours and family who helped out. By Saturday the roof was up and mostly complete. They claimed there was an hours work left to be done on Tuesday. By Monday we'd found about 15 different problem besides the generally horrible finish. we were not happy. Tuesday arrived Dad had called the boss to say he wasnt happy so by the time the workers arrived they were warned and kept making a load of bullshit claims. The roof frame had gone up incorrectly because production had gone wrong so the finish wasn't as neat as it should be. As if thats our fault rather than their measurements. One of them denied that the guttering was bowed despite it being so plain to see that even the other guy quickly admitted it. Anyway the 1 hour turned in to 8 hours during which I lost it when they chopped up the old roof panels which we had planned to use. In the end they sloped of without saying anything. They replaced a panels and refinished all sorts of other bits that they had no intention of doing. There were still a few points we weren't happy with, but to put the experience behind us Mun and Dad planned just to planned to pay at the end of the week as they agreed with Steve (the boss).
This morning Steve calls asking if we're happy because he wants paying (we'd already paid more than half) and now since hes being annoying were going to make them come and fix the rest of the problems. Of course that means another day of me being stuck in the house. Im going stir crazy and have also havent been able to get to post office to send Shockprowl his Huffer. Really really sorry dude.
Oh and I'm having fun with the tablets I keep going through waves of nausea, giddiness, short tempered-ness, drowsiness at 3pm and other fun side effects.
So that my week.

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire brought up a good point regarding the incident with the mushroom soup, isn't there still restrictions regarding how much liquid can be taken on a plane?

Bogatan, I am sending the DIACLONE CONSTRUCTICONS after those dozy contractors. Let them beware!
Yesterday was weird. A few of us ex of the counselling diploma course had to say goodbye to a good mate who had to go back to her home country of Trinidad Tobago very suddenly for reasons that are just fucking unfair. I'm shit at goodbyes but I'm even shitter at them when I know the odds of physically seeing someone again are vanishingly small. There were tears at the train station before a few of us went back to the pub for a couple of hours before dispersing.
I decided to walk home and the many pints* I had consumed hit my system and I suddenly became pished as a fart. I was rather melancholy by the time I got home and was seized by a sudden urge to watch Stargate Atlantis episodes (aaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiieeeeeee). I then drunkenly tried to put some he-man dvd's on my amazon wish-list but pressed the wrong buttons and accidentally bought them (damn it, though they were cheap) with cash I lack and couldn't find the cancel button. Whoops. I'll be putting some stuff up on ebay later then. Sigh.
-Ralph
*My tolerance for beer/lagar is low, so 'many pints' equals 5. I think.

If Edinburgh is the most miserable place in the UK then maybe Scotcon this year should be held in Glasgow.
In other news I'm currently finding it impossible to click any links in other peoples posts on the Hub. Everytime I try to do so Internet Explorer justs exits out of the internet.

Went to a 90's disco at my local pub last night. In typical fashion some people came dressed as celebrities from the decade. The barman dressed up as Ali G while one of the bargirls came dressed as Sporty Spice. To complete the charade a couple of regular girls came dressed as Ginger Spice (wearing a Union Jack dress) and Posh Spice while bizarrely a bloke dressed himself up as Scary Spice! Likethe 80's disco the pub held over a month ago it was a great night out.

Was up most of the night with insomnia, by the time I drifted off and woke up it was mid-day! Very confused.
During the night, however, I worked out how to cure the common cold! The average cold takes three days to lift. Thus, the only current cure is Time Itself! So all that needs done is to place the cold-ridden person within a Time Dillation Field so that three relative days for them pass, yet to the outside world no time has passed at all! Thus, to observers, it seems that the person's cold has vanished in a flash! And the person with the cold lost no time in the real world!
One of life's big conundrums: solved at last.

Any sign of The Kaptain this week ? He seems to have been off the grid since Tuesday and I want to know if he got his package. I fear the sheer awesomeness of the Soviet Super Soldiers Mantlo style may have overwhelmed his mind and he's lying face down in his living room

Karl's down in Cardiff for a few days and won't be back till early next week. He didn't mention Mantlo being received so chances are he won't get it till he is back.

Update: the Kaptain made the rendezvous and at last sighting was all present and correct. And thanks to meeting him, I stumbled onto the fact that they have now opened a footpath onto the Barrage from the near end, meaning that use of a boat or other form of motorised transport is no longer required to get across to it, and furthermore they had Formula-1 waterski races on the Bay today.
I tried to convince Karl I had this all planned out in advance, but I don't think he bought it.

I am still present and as correct as I ever get even still. Been back from my jaunt to Wales for about twenty four hours or so and just getting caught up with the Hub and what-not. Apologies Phil, I should have let you know I was going to be away so you weren't worried about the package - it slipped my mind with everything else that was going on. (It has safely arrived though, and a little bit of Mantlo madness was waiting for me when I got home). I had an excellent few days down in Wales (although my blistered feet might take exception with that statement). Spent a whole day revisiting the town where I grew up, which I hadn't been back to for about twenty years. A fascinating experience to wander around and see what has changed and what hasn't. I was as surprised at times by what was still the same as what was no longer as it was. Followed that up with Cardiff Castle (took me a whole morning - considerably longer than I had bargained for but well worth the time investment), which has some truly fascinating (and slightly bonkers) architecture in the old house, and then did the Museum (dropped in to visit (amongst other things) the Humpback Whale skeleton they have there. A strange sight to see the preserved and mounted skeleton of something that you previously saw with its skin still on lying on a beach). I then hared up to Shrewsbury on the Saturday to see my sister, who took me on a whistle-stop tour of old Shrewsbury. Finally, as Martin mentioned, Sunday saw the bay area and the Barrage taken in before I headed back up to the land of Scot. My feet can probably be forgiven for telling me that I could do with a couple of days off them... It is funny the things that strike you though. When I was growing up in Wales railway station announcements were always given in English first, then Welsh. Now the converse would appear to be the norm. A pleasant surprise that was. (Having changed their once at each end of the holiday though I can safely essay that Crewe railway station is one of the most depressing places I have ever been. I've sat around at a lot of railway stations in my time but there is something particularly desolate seeming about Crewe.) Far be it for me to argue with my host on that excursion on this matter. Clearly your masterplan worked to perfection.... Karl
