Does the Vista task manager not show the individual processes as opposed to the programs? I use the processes when I think my machine is a bit slow and google to check they should be running. Andy I don't really understand what any of this means. Problems are getting worse. I hope this computer isn't dying. Can't afford to replace. -Ralph

That should be fine. Mine was under 200MB when it was getting sluggish, but it was still useable. 894MB should be plenty. Martin

If you bring up the task manager if it's like Xp it will default to show you a window with the name of your programs and their status.
There should be a set of tabs at the top Applications/Processes/Performance/Networking/Users.
Click on Processes and you will then see a list of every process with the cup and memory usage.
Go to google and type in the process name and there are sites which explain them to you. It's a lengthy process but if there is anything dodgy that's gumming the machine up it will tell you and usually give you a way to stop/remove it.

I'll try to find time to do that. Every test I try reveals no problem.
--- Does anyone use AVG Anti-Virus? Is there a way to change the time of sheduled scans? I can't find the button! Wasn't a problem before but with current issues the computer is fucked when teh scan switches on.

Sometimes a registry fixing program can do the job. On my old computer I used to have this program called Registry Mechanic that sorts out any problems associated with the registry on the computer. If there is a problem with the registry or something is trying to load that shouldn't be then that can cause a problem or two.

I'll look into it. If problems persist I shall ask Nick to kindly take a look.

Been busy with life but the problems remain. Windows Task Manager is telling me 85 processess are running. Is that why the CPU is often running at 100%?

Could be that a couple are hogging most of the cpu's resources. Use google and type in the name of every process and it will tell you what they are and what they are needed for. You may find a few are completely unneccessary and can get rid of them.

Has anybody been on Facebook in the past few minutes? I've just gone onto it and all of the information on the home and profile pages seem to be condensed up to a point where I can't read a single thing that anybody has written. I've tried loading up the website in both Internet Explorer and Firefox but I get the same setup. I'm hoping its something to do with Facebook because at the top of my home page its telling me that I may need to upgrade my browser. I upgraded Internet Explorer yesterday and Firefox a minute or so ago but the pages are still the same on the website. No other websites are affected by this problem so I was wondering if its Facebook playing the idiot again and not my computer or internet settings.

My Home and Profile pages are still messed up today and I have contacted Facebook about the problem. It doesn't seem to be affecting anybody else as they are still posting status updates and applications etc.
The problem is bizzarre. Each and every one of the updates on my Home page and all profile pages are only about two inches long (about the size of the person's photograph to the left of each status update on my home page). As such I can't read the last line of what some people have written, I can't read any comments that have been posted and any applications posted onto my home page have been sliced in half (the 'pick your top 5' lists that people seem to be into at the moment is only displaying the tops of each picture in that respective top 5 list).
EDIT: It's working fine on the Safari browser but not on Firefox or Internet Explorer.
When I click on an application on Facebook it is displayed perfectly and when I visit another website there are no problems there either. I have restored my computer to its previous restore point and have tried other things but its still the same. I can only assume either somebody has hacked into my account somehow and messed around with something or Facebook have made one too many tweaks to the website.

The laptop's problems are reaching ludicrous levels now and I still can't figure out what's wrong with it so will try to find somewhere local to pop it into to get fixed this week.

I've had no problems of recent with my computer. I think the problem was that I had a malicious cookie stored in Internet Explorer and whenever I downloaded Firefox I had all of the cookies from Internet Explorer copied over to Firefox including the bad ones. Although I have got used to using Safari now I still deleted all of my cookies from IE just to be on the safe side.

Facebook readers will have been following my latest Broadband tale of woe. Following the Broadband would not connect saga of weeks 20 & 21 I've had an absurdly slow connection - the engineer that came out then told me I was capable of getting 3meg. I'm a realist, I know I will rarely see this. But I reckon 1+ meg is reasonable to expect. Well just before the last trip to London I found a line speed checker at www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ and that told me I was getting 135k. Eeek, that's not good. I also found www.bt.com's estimated line speed checker and that said I should be getting 3meg as well. (By contrast it claims my Mum aught to get 5meg and she gets between 2.5 and 3.5) So after several phone calls to BT Mumbai they've managed to detect a fault at the exchange and we have an engineer coming in the next 48 hours. Watch this space Engineer coming tomorrow AM BT Engineer came today. Started the day with .5meg coming into the house and 3.5meg down the road. Now have 2.5meg coming into the house......and still just 135k coming out of the Hub even when it's in the wall plate and etherneted to the Laptop. A new (better) Hub is en route!

I suspect that won't be much help Phil. The problem lies with with their main transmitters (if that is what they're called). Fortunately for you your BT engineer actually had the decency to admit that they were at fault. When I was with BT they were adamant that it was because the Hub router was getting interference from our TV even though there was no problem for the first 12 months of our contract. In the end we took our business elsewhere and have so far had no problem with Virgin - and its cheaper too.

Bloody annoying that is.
Touch wood I've been with Tiscali since I've been online in 2001 and haven't had any major problems.

Hmmm. It appears that the curse has descended upon me too. Something is interfering badly with the functionality of my web-browsers.
Anything that spawns a new browser tab fails to load the resulting page at all, some of the time I can only have one browser window open if I want to be able to access anything on the web, and sometimes that fails entirely as well. (I spent an hour attempting to reply to an email earlier this afternoon, had to close down and restart web browsers about ten times each, and had to allow five to ten minutes to load each page with every attempt.
A speedtest suggests that I am getting a downstream speed of 981kps, which is better than I had last year.
Given that it affects two different web-browsers, which use different HTML rendering engines I am fairly sure it isn't a browser issue. I am leaning towards the thought that it might be Spyware Doctor, which I am recently reinstalled on the laptop. Might need to blow that away and see if it makes any difference.
Anyone else had any similar problems? (If anyone elses experience shed any light on the situation it would be most gratefully accepted.)
Karl

I've got Spyware Doctor and to a certain extent I haven't had any problem. Strangely, on my Safari browser though I've had two of my bookmarks delete themselves for no reason whatsoever. They were only the bookmarks for Wikipedia and a drop-down list of news websites that come packaged with the browser and so I am not all that bothered (I can easily put the Wikipedia bookmark back in and I don't use the news websites at all).

Laptop come back from cowboy repair place worse than before. Still heats up, lots of personal data gone, and one of the hard drives is missing. One of the more pressing problems it now has (which it did not have before) is that the display is now very dark and eye-straining to use. Does anyone know how to make the display bright again? I can't watch anything on this now: it's too dull.
Acer Aspire 5100 running Vista.

That doesn't sound good Ralph. Maybe you should try another shop if you can find one. As for making the display brighter I believe there is something in the Control Panel that does that.
