You're right. Time to pull the switch that transforms the house into a mobile battle station. It's the only solution. -Ralph Indeed - there is no other option, and if Hot Rod is outside then he is on his own...... Karl (Must get the _right_ switch though don't want to end up folding the fortress and Falkirk to the orbit of Pluto. Even if it does feel cold enough that we could already be there.....)

In my youth, Woollies was the only place open on a Sunday where you could get Transformers.
"Graham, we're going to Hunstanton for a day at the beach, seeing as it's Sunday. Are you coming along?" "Is there a Woollies there?" "I think so." "Yeah, I'll go."

It will be sad to see Woolies go, but not a suprise. Many of their stores are a shambles, but they do have some decent bargains and I have fond childhood memories of buying toy Matchbox cars from the Partick store.
If the stores go, I hope staff are given decent notice and helped to find alternative employment rather than just dumped.

Circa 1990 Woolworths started bizarrely stocking 1984-6 range TFs, including US-only releases. My mind was blown when I found 1985-packaged green Constructicons in a Woolworths in Cornwall. Matt Dallas got Soundwave/Buzzsaw, Frenzy/Ratbat and Starscream for me from his local Woolworths circa 1990.
And of course they had Pretender Monsters, Pretender Vehicles, etc. which weren't on general UK release.

Flat cleaned until it shines. While trying to locate the switch to turn off the freezer I found a major fire hazard. Ho ho! I'll need to pass that info on.
Few things to tie up tomorrow afternoon then I'm rid of it. Let us hope for no deposit related shenanigans.
Although, no job knockbacks this week, which is a novelty after the last 3 days.

Here's a quick Christmas-themed conundrum for you all. Consider the following statements:
This will be my fifth Christmas as a floor grunt at Toys'r'us. Glasgow has two branches of Toys'r'us in it, of which my branch is the larger. Neither store is actually full-size. Both have less space and fewer staff than many of the big English shops. In spite of our limits and competition, our store was number 2 out of some 70+ UK stores for toy sales last weekend. The previous two weekends we were number 1. Tomorrow is the last payday before Christmas. The following day is Saturday. I'm working 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. both days. I've already worked 9 till 6 the previous 3 days. I have a cold.
With these statements in mind, consider the following question:
What state will I be in by Saturday night?

You'll never get away with that! Not unless you've hired a couple of vans at least.

Actually, I think you could be needing the cargo capacity of Dreadrock to have much chance of hauling a even a portion of that away.
Nick, I would hazard a guess that the phrase "battered and war-weary" might be apposite come Saturday.

I had a strange dream last night. I was in my old flat when a voice told me to go into the Cupboard Of Doom. Inside was Nick, seated at a gambler's table wearing a black waistcoat and spinning a roulette wheel idly with one finger. "Come in," he said.
"Here is fifty pounds," I said, handing him some cash while the theme from Kojak played in the background. Nick made two piles of £25 each, side by side, then raised both his fists in triumph (like in a cartoon). "NOW YAHOO JAPAN IS MINE!" he screamed. Then the light went out and it was very dark, at which point I woke up to blow my nose (I have a dose of the space lurgy).

As Sundays go this hasn't been a bad one at all. I started out with a bit of a lie-in, didn't get up until 9am which is unusual for me. Made myself a nice cooked breakfast (a very rare treat) and sat down to watch an episode from the Second Season of Batman:The animated Series, which I recently acquired on DVD - and to make things that bit better it was one of the episodes that I hadn't seen into the bargain. Then I went out for a couple of hours walk along the canals. The air was crisp, the landscape was liberally draped in frost, the mist hung in curtains and the ice had spread right across from one bank to another - thick enough that you could bounce a small stone from one side to the next In short it was the perfect winter morning - exactly the time of year that I most enjoy to be honest.
Then this afternoon I settled down after lunch to watch an episode of "The Wire" and to phone my sister to catch up with what was happening in her life. And to top things off I even managed to get my freezer defrosted into the bargain. So, a little bit of work and a fair chunk of relaxation. Not a bad way to spend a day at all.

"Is there a Woollies there?" "I think so." "Yeah, I'll go." You and me both, Man, you and me both. Great purchooselles have been made in Woolies over the years. Did I say years? I meant DECADES! Hmm? What? Feeling my age? No, nonsense! Hello Sportsfans. Finished three nights in a row as of this AM. Freaked me up. The shifts were busy, but all the jobs were just dull. Nothing to perk my you-know-whats. 'Tis was funny watching all the young girls dressed in belt shivering in the frezzzzzing cold! Haven't they heard of coats? (AAARRGHH! I'M SO OLD I'M BECOMMING RESPONSIBLE!) Three nights in a row, this time or year, has screwed with me a bit. I go to work, it's dark. I get home, it's dark. I go to sleep, it's dark. I wake up, it's dark. I go to work, it's dark - ahh, you get the idea. Me n the Squirt (aka Piglet) stopped outside this evening to look at the stars. I talked about them a bit, pointed out a plane's lights, coupla constellations (well, all two of the ones I can identify). Wonderfull to see her, well, wonder. Then, unprompted, she started to sing 'twinckle, twinckle, little star'! A frozen tear appeared on my cheak. -Not really. But it was a nice moment. And so, another week is done. Now I must go, and put wine in my tum. Laters!

Having exhausted every penny I had while trying to get a job over the last 6 months and subsequently losing my home, I'm off down 'the social' tomorrow to beg for money. Things cannot possibly get any worse.
I do try to put things into perspective and rationalise that there are indeed an awful lot of people in the world in far worse positions than I and that I should make the best of it but I do find it rather hard to get myself into that mindset no matter how hard I try. I mean, it's my own responsibility that I got into this hole. No-one made me lose my old job, no one made me decide to do what turned out to be a useless post-grad. I have no-one to blame. It's my responsibility. Perhaps that makes it worse. I don't know.
In other news, I did read some Michael Moorcock stuff earlier. An author new to me, and one I'd never got round to. Enjoyable pulpy nonsense. Will read some more. It's the first time I've been able to concentrate on any prose for a few months.

I'm glad to hear the Hawkmoon book brought a little light relief to you Ralph. I know the situation isn't ideal but to be honest if you'd remained in your previous job I can only imagine how much your health would have deteriorated as a result.
At the end of the day as you say there are folks in worse positions than yourself and I dare say you will end up back on your feet soon enough.

Yeah, smart chap like you'll come up with something, Doc'. From what And just said, sounds like your old job wasn't exactly the rumpy-pumpy, so good on ya for following the dream. Just some times dreams take a little while to reach fullfillment. If all else fails you can come work for me as Piglet's fat-bits squeezer when I'm at work.
