Same here. I was already out after the last price increases other than small press stuff. Average comic now costs £3.20. Bollocks to that.

Indeed. It was brought home to me the week that I purchased two comics for the same price as a 630 pages of paperback novel. The comics took me about six minutes reading each, whilst I was working my way through the paperback for about a week. The cost:content ratio is no longer bearable for me. There are a few things I would be tempted to pick up in single issue formats, but mostly small press stuff where the likelihood of a collection is minimal/none. As far as the major publishers are concerned single issue comics is, sadly, no longer sensible value for my money.

The crazy thing is, it's now is cheaper for me to go to the cinema for an evening than it is to buy two comics*. I'm seeing a 3-hour movie later on for £5.50. Two comics would be £6.40. Madness!

Faaantastic...
So is Maximum Dinos 4 going to arrive before or after the price hike? Because it was originally scheduled for March 25th, but it doesn't seem to be on any of the shipping lists for this week.

There is a breaking point and given the fact that Panini/Titan have reprint rights, there will get to a point where people will go and pick up their collectors editions given that they print three comics an issue with a nice cardstock cover. Andy The breaking point is there for me now. The average US comic will be £3.20. I had a look in WH Smiths today at the Marvel Collector Edition titles. Cardstock covers, you get 3 US comics inside...and £2.50. Yep, 3 comics for less than the price of 1 if I pop into FP. Once the UK reprints finish running Civil War stuff and have a jumping on point I can see myself switching to them for some Marvel stories. I noticed in FPG today that $20 trades which a few months ago were £13, then £15 were now priced up to £19. Yep, Panini Collector Editions for me I think. -Ralph

As Grimlock said (in a slightly different context) on the cover of Transformers 174: "Wotta revoltin' development this is!"
I'm furious that Diamond should hike the prices again so soon after the last one and effectively increase the wholesale cost of a $3.99 comic by 45p since December. That is a hell of an increase, and I'm not sure I buy the justification about the deteroriating pound. Sure it's weak at the moment but has it really slumped much from where it was in December? I'm not sure, and it makes me wonder if the £2 wholesale price was Diamond's plan all along but it was less controversial to achieve it in two seperate rises rather than one.
Sadly this is another nail in the coffin for comics at the moment and will only send more stores under as well as pushing readers towards trades or illegal downloads.
However, as long as Diamond holds a monopoly stores there's little choice but to like it or lump it. I can't help but feel a little competition would be healthy in this situation.
I actually contacted IDW this week to see if I could buy direct from them but I was told their contract with Diamond forbids it. So I'll probably absorb this latest rise as far as my OneShallStand.com store is concerned in the interests of keeping prices down... so that's money out of my pockets and into Diamond's. Bummer.

You shouldn't have to do that. You're too good to your customers.

Price increases 30th March 2009. Update 27.03.09.
I am writing today to announce a postponement of the recently advised price increases. When the exchange rate dipped dramatically three weeks ago there was a need to look again at our prices. Since that time there has been a strengthening of the pound against the dollar so we are happy to postpone these price increases.
We will look at this issue again in April. As most of the products we sell are purchased in dollars our prices will inevitably track significant fluctuations in the pound/dollar exchange rate. Depending upon movements of the exchange rate over the coming weeks and months, we may be able to maintain the current prices or it may be necessary to implement the previously advised increases. If the latter is necessary an announcement will be made at the appropriate time.
Note that the April order form has gone to press using the increased prices. If no actual price increases are implemented before the goods in April Previews ship, you will be billed the current pre-increase prices. The April Previews and order form are due to ship the week commencing 30th March.

So - there we have it!
Obviously, if the pound slumps below $1.40 during April I would expect Diamond to try again but if it continues its slight upward trend, there should be no reason for price increases.
What this e-mail DOESN'T say, is that Diamond have been inundated with protests and really felt the pressure on the decision made last week. So thanks to all for your comments and support!
have a good weekend!

I bet though if the exchange rate goes the other way they won't rush to drop their prices.
They will just rub themselves with money, laughing.
