I thought "The Unicorn and the Wasp" was ok. Certainly more bearable than the previous episode. It was a "passed the time" kind of episode - perfectly acceptable on a tosh level, but I'm not sure that it is something I would go back and rewatch.
I think I might have enjoyed it more if I felt that Christie was a wonderful shining light amongst mystery writers - as the episodes writer so clearly felt. As I'm not particularly fond of Christie I think that aspect of the episode fell rather flat for me.
Still, it was entertaining enough.

Yes, I did struggle with all the 'Agatha Christie is brilliant!' stuff. Felt a bit too much like telling rather than showing. The actress put in a good show though.
RE: Tate. IIRC from the 'Partners in Crime' commentary, 'The Unicorn and the Wasp' was the first episode she shot of the run. It's pretty obvious from her performance!
And was anyone else unintentionally amused by the attempt to make it appear that cars in the '20's could go really fast?

I too am filled with joy! I could not think of a better choice to take over. A great writer and canny enough to avoid wankery.
I expect the RTD backlash to kick-in off the back of this on the likes of OG, which would be a shame. He's done a great job on the show and he's still running it next year. Yes, moaning fanboys, there is a series next year. Just in a different format, that's all. There is no gap year. Move along.

I do think RTD has done a good job overall, but I'd have to say I wish he'd bowed out after last of the Timelords. Season 4 has been pretty disappointing on the whole.

To be honest, I would say that Season Four has not been entirely to my taste so far - but there is still a half season to go so it has plenty of time in it. I think Russell T Davies is one of the few people who could have steered the the new Doctor Who series through it's early years as well as has been done.
I am looking forward to seeing what comes of having Moffat at the helm though. His judgement is fairly sound when it comes to television so he should be well-suited to take the "big chair". (He'd probably have been my pick to be honest so I can only approve of the decision).

I've quite enjoyed it so far (last two episodes notwithstanding) but then it's well established I have lower standards when it comes to my entertainment than the rest of the Scots crew. Still, I'd say that we've seen pretty much all the tricks RTD has up his sleeve and now is about right for him to bow out and, in his own words, become a viewer again.
From the BBC report: "My entire career has been a Secret Plan to get this job," said Steven Moffat. "I applied before but I got knocked back cos the BBC wanted someone else. Also I was seven."
Enthusiasm. I like that.

It took me a few days to realise that the Moffat/Davies announcement made no mention of Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures.

Davies has had little to do with each beyond being a name behind them. Torchwood's effectively been head written by the Chibnall and Gareth Roberts has been on SJA

Although I would presume that Chibnall will have left Torchwood by now - given that he is going on to "Law and Order: London" in a very US -style "showrunner" role I suspect he isn't going to have time to retain that same level of involvement with "Torchwood". Incidentally did you know Chibbers has a forthcoming appearance on a classic DW DVD ? He apparently appeared on Open Air as a speccy teenager to discuss the 85 cancellation and this bit of clippage is on the Trial of a Timelord DVDs

Both Chibnall and producer Richard Stokes are off Torchwood IIRC. So if there is a third season it will need a new showrunner and producer.

If you haven't slept properly for over a week, have watched Eurovision and imbibed a few gin & tonics, the Cuddly Colin tat-fest that is Timelash suddenly becomes THE BEST THING EVER. Honestly. I have tested this under laboratory conditions.

Radio Times is talking up next Saturday's episode as if it's the best thing since 'The Empty Child' and 'Blink'.
I can't wait.
[Off-topic: Meanwhile, tonight for Martin it's solid telly from 7.25 till 10.30 (Batman*, Springwatch, The Apprentice, You're Fired). Sigh! And I had so many good books I was planning to read! Oh well, plenty of time for reading books in the coming weeks, what with the imminent return of Big Brother to our screens.]

It does look good... but Daleks, again?

Post by legios on May 27, 2008 17:11:27 GMT
Daleks are considered the "killer app" for New Doctor Who at the moment. I pretty much anticipated that we would see them back at some point this year.
Whether this will still hold under a new production regime in a couple of years time I am uncertain.

The ad that aired last Saturday was a trailer for the rest of the season, although not indicated as such, which confused my mother who was very excited and thought that meant Rose and the Daleks were both in the next episode. So it doesn't mean the Daleks are in the next episode as as such (though they might be).

I would imagine that with the end of the RTD era we might see a slight scaling back of the Dalek presence. They won't be the big bad all the time but we'll get regular appearances from them.
