And it has the most mind-churning extra feature ever. This is real. This is not a spoof: Oh dear. That's got to be somewhere near the bottom of the sci-fi/fantasy spin-off pop song spectrum, which has Scott Bakula's 'Fate's Wide Wheel' at the good end Stan Bush's 'Ground Zero' somewhere in the middle and Leonard Nimoy's 'Ballad of Bilbo Baggins' at the bad. It could be a hit if they convince Dizzie Rascal to rap a bit in the middle.

I am as happy as a pig in shit with the box set of THE TRIAL OF A TIME LORD. Excellent picture and audio restoration, so nice after the very poor quality of the VHS tapes the BBC used for the video release. Really shows up how effective some of the music is. The sets for Mindwarp now look stunning, the sets for Terror of the Vervoids...less so. Aww well! The costume/make-up for Sil really is extraordinary. Even at a resolution higher than the original broadcast it looks fantastic.
Also, BRIAN BLESSED turns up for the 'making of Mindwarp' featurette and is clearly out of his mind, bellowing "GORDON'S ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE! DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!" within 3 seconds of appearing.
Bit annoyed at the higher price-point (even after shopping around) in comparison to other original series sets but there are shedloads of extra features to get through. Still several more hours to get through.

It is indeed great. Trial of a Time Lord day at Burns tower was a day well spent, curry, ale, sambuca and BRIAN BLESSED and the Valeyard.

36.99 from WH Smith seems to be the cheapest it can be gotten from a bricks n mortar place in Scotlandia.

That's only 4 more than I paid with a special offer at Asda online. Listened to both Saward commentaries, plus the Colin + commentary for 1, and watched the big Colin documentary on disc 4.

As if the horror of hearing a few seconds of it wasn't enough - there are transcribed lyrics out there too. This is surely more than the continumn can take. I also attempted to watch "The Visitation" recently . Now I remembered it being a bit poor from when I was a kid and it would appear that this is an occasion where memory did not cheat. I watched all of the commentary - because Davison and Fielding are always great value on commentaries (no proper fashion rant from Fielding this time which is disappointing though), but when it came to try to watch the story properly I just about staggered through one episode. I remembered it being very dull, and it seems just as dull as an adult. The rest of it shall be banished unwatched back into the rental pool from whence it came. Karl

Sadly, most of the Davison episodes just don't hold up today. Such a shame: his Doctor is fantastic but some things are just of a certain time. The only Davison stories you need: Earthshock, The Five Doctors, Enlightenment, The Awakening, Warriors on the Cheap, Resurrection of the Daleks, The Caves of Androzani. I do love Davison/Fielding commentaries though. Very entertaining.
In other news now, 3 days of THE TRIAL OF A TIME LORD DVD set and I have yet to exhaust the content on this thing! Going by the commentary on Terror of the Vervoids, Colin Baker clearly still has no love for Eric Saward. "I don't know what happened to him.", "Perhaps it isn't such a shame I haven't seen him since." etc.
And after only 22 bloomin' years at last Philip Martin explains what the Doctor's erratic behaviour was about in Mindwarp on the lively commentary track! Hurrah!
Documentary on cliffhangers was bouncy fun, especially when Rob Shearman declares his deep and abiding love of the crap "Bellal! Look out! [it's some tiles!]" cliffhanger from Death to the Daleks. The featurette closes with a marvelous bit of bonkerness from Lord Tom which I shall not spoil at which I damn near pissed myself.
Extra features on 'The Ultimate Foe' tonight. Then it's time for the 3rd viewing of the main feature, this time with the text commentary switched on!

Oh, there is a mistake on the packaging re: disc 4. The Colin and co commentary is stated as episode 14 only when in fact it covers episodes 13 and 14. I shudder that some folk may miss out on extra Cuddly Colin joy!

It does sound like there is a huge amount of value-for-money in the set, even given the higher price. That is one of the good things about the "old-Who" DVD's - you do get a fair amount on each release.

Saward's commentary on episode 13 is interesting. It really does sound like the man was having a breakdown (for want of a better word) at some point when Trial was made (not necessarily in the medical sense). Suddenly a lot of his behaviour makes sense. His recollection of events sound a lot like someone slowly losing the plot but not being fully aware of it. It's his tone and inflection more than anything else.
He does not say that, but it seems a possible interpretation having listened to him at length on that track.

Interesting. It would fit with some of the supporting evidence from the time actually. I had wondered whether he was having some kind of stress-related issue from the descriptions of what was going on in that period.

There's an almost complete bollocks bonkers rumour doing the rounds that all surving 7 Doctors are doing a Children In Need special.
Besides, it would only be worth it if they were re-uniting to sing a new version of...DOCTOR IN DISTRESS!
That's right. You can now hear the 9th doc singing: "there were giants 7 feet tall" can't you?
You've thought it. You can't unthink it.

Currently watching "Androids of Tara" by virtue of the recently acquired VHS release. Ah, now this is wonderful stuff - fiendish evil counts, folk armed with electric rapiers, a prince with an Android double and a wonderful terrible monster into the bargain, and that's only episode one!
Yes, it is the "Prisoner of Zenda" on a semi-medieval space planet - but it makes no pretense otherwise and revels in its pulpyness. Great stuff. Makes up for "Power of Kroll" which I saw last weekend.

Androids of Tara is tops, only let down by the blink-and-you'll-miss it fabulously crap monster. Which should have been in it more! I do love a good crap monster!
The guest cast ham it up wonderfully. For once, Tom looks positively flat by comparison!
