Do not get the second book you linked in your post Dark Stranger. I have it and at best it can be considered a fanboy's book. It is virtually cover to cover photographs of the authors collection of Japanese Transformers with very little info on the individual toys themselves. A number of the Japanese TF toys that were released don't even get a mention because the author hasn't got them in his collection. All in all it is a book you would be wise to skip.

See, I've always wanted a good coffee table style book on Transformers toys. I've never been sure what to get. All the ones I've looked at seemed to be in Japanese.
...AND I DON'T EVEN SPEAK JAPANESE.

See, I've always wanted a good coffee table style book on Transformers toys. I've never been sure what to get. All the ones I've looked at seemed to be in Japanese. ...AND I DON'T EVEN SPEAK JAPANESE. Speaking it wouldn't necessarily help... as you'd need to be able to read it to (I for one couldn't even identify the characters for the little Japanese I can speak, let alone read them). The nice thing though is that a lot of Japanese books in of that sort of style are brilliantly laid out and illustrated. I can't read Japanese characters, but I still have a fair gaggle of artbooks and the like and get a lot of value from them. Of the two linked to in the first post I can't comment on the first one as I've never even heard of it, but the second I owned for a while before dumping it in a charity shop. Make of that what you will. I'd second Ralph's recommendation - either "Generations:Deluxe" or the original edition of "Generations" is the way to go. Both are pretty comprehensive in terms of having a picture of just about every toy to get a release in the US, Europe and Asia up until the end of the Generation 2 line. ("Deluxe" has some additional pages of concept art that aren't in the original printing - something that annoys me as I haven't yet tracked down a copy of "Deluxe" and I do so love concept art). Karl

Generations Deluxe is indeed your best shout at a good japanese Tf book.

Cheers for the help guys, particularly Ralph and Zudobug. That second book I mentioned was going to be the one I bought.
Any idea where Generations Deluxe can be picked up?

I saw the first one in Forbidden Planet a few months ago. Its thick, but very small. Don't remember it covering very much either let alone the Japanese Transformer stuff.

The first one, Warman's, is a smaller-than-A5 book that contains pictures of all the US G1 toys - 95% of them shown in one mode. Photography is average, poor in parts.
As other Hubbers have said, Generations Deluxe remains the best TF book out there, and contains pics of all the Japanese toys.

Does Generations have pics of all those exclusive Japanese toys like the Headmasters heads, Lione, Kirk and the rest?

I'm keeping an eye on Amazon Japan at the minute actually Ralph, via Shopping Mall Japan. Saw one a week ago, but didn't get a deposit put down in time.

Might be an idea to ask Nick to keep an eye on yahoo japan. He's good at spotting things there.

I just got one of Yahoo Japan seems to be the deluxe generations book, buts a chinese version. Whether this means a pirate copy or actually just the version released in China I do not know. The cover says welcome to the world of Transformers and it is mostly black or dark with G1 Primes boxart in gold. Either way it was very cheap and look gorgeous.

Hey Bog, could you post a picture of the cover, or a link to the ended auction? I've been keeping an eye on Yahoo Japan for that very book. Was postage expensive?

On the back it has a semi random hotmail email address that makes me think its not particularly legal, but if you do come across one it is good quality. It cost me about £10 with the various fees I would guess international postage I cant say as it came with Liokaiser and some junkers which SMJ still dont seem to have sent me an invoice for. Andy

Nick, is there a difference between the standard and deluxe books, cover-wise?
The "translation" button seldom makes things any clearer.

Yes- the deluxe book has "Deluxe Edition" written underneath the four faction logos beneath the title. If you want this one and don't have a YJ proxy account I can bid on it.

Thanks for the help anyway Nick, and major cheers for the SMJ recommendation, they're very helpful.

Just finished the whole book in one sitting with a few glasses of wine. What a purchase!! Got it for £23 off Yahoo Japan and I feel I've got a massive bargain. It's a shame it's not the Deluxe versio, but I'm happy. Great book.

It is a stunning tome, Which should be in every home. I am fortunate to have the Deluxe edition, Which does not suffer from attrition.

Bump. In the Completing TFU thread Pinwig mentioned he'd seen copies of this on Amazon Jp I've also seen an advert for it on Snakas blog it would appear that it's been reprinted. Order a copy at www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/4813010946£22.71 for me this morning

My suspicions were correct.
I didn't think the book was going to lose that much value on the secondary market unless there had been a reprint.

I recall news of a reprint about a year ago but as it did not turn up on HLJ I had assumed it had been cancelled. Good news.

Arrived yesterday, looks fabulous. Lots of interesting production artwork.
I think there's a page of contemporary adverts missing from the original edition, including the convention exclusive reissues and the then current SCF set. I've also spotted a page of artwork which I think occurs earlier in the deluxe edition.
