For 1985 we're going to go straight in for the voting! I've counted 20 new Decepticons for 1985, so there are enough poll options to cover them all! So, think carefully about which Decepticon from 1985 is your favourite and then place your vote accordingly! The poll will not show the results until after 7 days when it's been locked. How exciting! So get voting! If you need some memory jogging, then I recommend: www.unicron.us/tf1985/ for pictures and information of all the Transformers released in 1985. Feel free to put forward your reasons for voting or thoughts on 1985's Decepticons as well. You never know, you may win other fans over to your way of thinking!

I'm voting Shrapnel with Ralph. The Insecticons are the most beautifully coloured TFs of all time. The Dinobots, Constructicons, Predacons and Seacons all benefited from beng colour-coordinated rather than random mixes, but the Insecticons had the best colours. And lots and lots of CHROME!
Ooh! And the best styled weapons of any TF toy: Shrapnel's rifle is reminiscent of his stag beetle mode claws.

I miss sub-groups. We don't see them as often now the toys have shifted to 'new series' every year or two.

I don't think we've had a proper "sub-group" since Beast Wars.
It's not really the same saying Sub-Group: MEGA or DELUXE.

I've thought long and hard about this. (Actually, that would be a lie - I've mostly been putting my feet up, drinking tea and watching "The Wire" but you know). There are a lot of good toys in the 85 Decepticons, Shockwave with his impressive Space Gun mode. Blitzwing, one of the first of the triple changers. A lot of good toys but for me the Insecticons stand head and shoulders above them all. They have a nice unified aesthetic, a clever idea behind them and quite well engineered designs. (Also, as a child the shinyness did appeal to me).
I'm going to step away from the crowd though and admit that the one that rises from the pack for me is Bombshell. I like his head design - with the lower face being comprised of a grill, the back of the neck mounted mortar is an interesting visual and I just love the general aesthetics of the design. Also I think he has a great "bug mode".
I have to admit, I miss sub-groups too. We've had attempts at something similar - the Vanguard/Cybertron Defense Autobots from a couple of lines ago were unified in terms of their alt-modes - but we haven't had anything that has gone the whole way and tied in aesthetic and colour scheme to create something really distinctive.

I voted Devastator: the best came first I don't think we've had a proper "sub-group" since Beast Wars. It's not really the same saying Sub-Group: MEGA or DELUXE. Dinobots in BM & Rid ? Combaticons & Build Team in RID ? Terrorcons, Aerialbots, Combaticons & Constructicons in Energon ? The planet factions in Cybertron ?

There's a lot to like about the '85 Decepticon lineup. Shockwave is a great roleplay toy, the Constructicons while not spectacular individually form an impressive combined robot and, while Ban Dai offerings Puzzler and Monstrous didn't need any extra parts to combine, the Mean Green Building Machines could all mount their extra parts in vehicle mode for added play value. Blitzwing and Astrotrain were the first and arguably best implemented of the triple-changers (up till the present day, I reckon) BUT like a lot of other folk I'm going to with one of the Insecticons. The Deluxe Insecticons are all excellent, with the Ban Dai Beetras moulds introducing a lot of design features that would show up in future figures- fold-out heel spurs, compartments with a joint at one end that opened to allow transformation then closed again producing an articulated rather than telescoping limb and so on. Great stuff. However, they are a bit more fiddly and less unified than the Hasbro/Takara moulds. Because he hasn't gotten any love yet, and because I think I played with him more than the other two (the Insecticons were the first sub-group I completed as a kid, which should tell you something) my vote has to go to Kickback. He's the most articulated of the trio and in a huge break with tradition actually *gains* articulation in insect mode due to the separation of the arms. Also, he was unique among my collection (until I completed Defensor a couple of years later) in that he was the only TF I owned who could turn his head. By my reckoning only Wheeljack and Soundwave before him could do that, and I missed out on them first time round. -Nick

Way to go with the strategy, Insecticon fans. I went for the same one as Ralph for tactical reasons - if I'd known there would be a split vote I probably would have gone for Bombshell, as he has a more alien and theatening aura about him. Mind you, Kickback has a tommy gun.
If the Insecticons combined, and there was a vote for the team as a whole like with the Constructicons, they'd walk it.
Blitzwing? Definitely the best official Triple Changer, but the wings on the jet mode are hardly aerodynamic.

Yeah, the Insecticons as a whole are a great team. Shrapnel just inches ahead, but all 3 are great.

Definitely the best official Triple Changer, but the wings on the jet mode are hardly aerodynamic. Martin True, the thickness of the wing on Blitzwing is a little unlikely. The turret hanging off the bottom of the plane doesn't help the aerodynamics much either. (That said, the actual plane his air-mode is based on doesn't necessarily look particularly graceful itself). :-) I'm afraid tactics aren't really entering into my voting in these polls. I'm just going with my, admittedly slightly quirky gut feeling. (If I had been voting tactically I would have given Shrapnel the nod, but in the end Bombshell just edges him out on aesthetics). Karl
