But it's pump. The show is pump. I tried but could never get past the first 3 or 4 episodes. -Ralph Oh my god does this mean that Ralph hasn't seen one of the greatest take-downs ever?
It's both clever and obvious, and I don't recall seeing anything similar in any other giant robot show, but it must have happened! I love how the Dai-X flies into the launch bay, stands up smashing through the decks, and then just wades through the ship!

If it had been done anywhere before I would lay money on it having been in a previous Go Nagai show - he is the founder of the Super Robot genre (as well as arguably the "Magical Girl" genre as well. Most people are satisfied with just creating one new genre from nothing... Go Nagai is not most people... :-) )

I have decided Star Fleet will be next up in my weekday 25 minute wind-down slot, having finished the Chocky trilogy last week. With regard to my ownership of this series, I made do for a many years with the few VHS releases it got in the UK, and then like many others I ended up with home-made DVD transfers of the eight omnibus videos that came out in America. I bought the proper UK DVD release, which I see from this thread was in 2009, and only today took the shrink wrap off it! So this will be my first viewing of the series in the proper episodic format since I watched it on ITV thirty odd years ago.
I'm pleased to have one of Phil's blogs to read alongside watching the episodes again. I'm surprised it must be at least eight years since I last watched it. Star Fleet's one of those series you always feel you've only just recently rewatched.

Stays in the mind.
If you've not seen it on DVD the extra bits in episode 2 might surprise you.
Tempted to redo the blogs with Screen Caps

Reading back through this thread my heart sank when I discovered a soundtrack CD came out eight years ago, but then imagine my joy when I discovered it's still available and doesn't cost mental money on the secondary market as I'd assumed. Bought!

CD arrived yesterday. I saved it to kick off the holiday with tonight.
That is magic, pure magic. Hearing those tunes in proper, clear stereo for the first time ever gives them a whole new dimension. That really was quite an emotional moment!

You know I don't think I've ever really thought about exactly how big X-Bomber is before. It's huge isn't it. Dai-X is enormous, but the parts are barely noticeable on it. I suppose because when it's next to Macara's ship it looks small it hides just how big it actually is.
Which then begs the question why it is that big when it only has a crew of four and two passengers.

It's so big so it can carry the giant robot, duh

And can be combat piloted by one man and a small robot.
Maybe the bulk is made up with all the gear needed for the weapon systems? Or because it's an emergency situation and they have no other crew capable of piloting it?

Yeah I mean really X-bomber is pretty much a mobile structure for that big x-cannon isnt it? (and robot holder)

Yeah, but it must be the size of the Enterprise D and look how many crew that. I think it's because it looks like a smaller craft design, like an X-Wing, but it's more on a troop carrier scale.

Thing is though, the Galaxy Class cruisers are much more multi-mission in design than X-Bomber. They are expected to do exploration, diplomatic operations, and apparently serve as command ships. They are also designed to carry a significant non-military contingent as well. So the ballpark complete complement for one of those is larger than that required to operate the ship, as well as larger than the minimum crew required to fight the ship in extremis.
I wouldn't be surprised if quite a lot of X-Bombers bulk is actually comprised of things like capacitors for the big gun, and fuel bunkerage (after all, she cruises quite a distance in the series and must have been burning a lot of fuel when you count in all the combat manuevering she does). Given the existence of PPA, the drone freighters etc it does appear that the tech-base of the series is up to providing quite a lot of automation so it may not take that many people to actually operate the vessel. Where the small crew is going to hurt is in damage control - unlike larger complements there is no-one to spare to make running repairs, fight fires, and do the things that are needed to keep a ship in the fight after damage.
Mind you, considering the power of the aforementioned Big Gun, compared to anything else the Star Fleet had available I wouldn't be surprised if the intended doctrine was built around a single, massive, battle-ending blow followed by retiring to repair rather than extended slugging matches. Unfortunately it seemingly transpires that the Imperial Alliance doctrine appears to be almost exactly the opposite - emphasising attrition warfare and building their capital vessels for staying power...

I was thinking about this. The size/weight would spiral wouldn't it - the bigger the ship, the more fuel needed to propel it, which would make it bigger again, needing more fuel, which would make it bigger again... and so on.

I read the Lookin strips book that came with the DVD set. Those stories fit quite well with the series, and the art is great, but some of the characters' voices are a bit off. Not sure about John Lee being called Fatty all the time and PPA seems to have to be referred to as Perfectly Programmed Android every time he speaks. Still, it's a nice bonus. Timeslip should have done the same.

Oh my god.
OH. MY. GOD.
I knew Bryan May covered the theme because I have the single, but I never knew he actually did a video too. That is the greatest music video of all time. That... wow. I am stunned. I never knew. This is the most excited I've been this decade.

Yeah. The single has some random noodling on the b side with them and a few others. I think it all came from a jam session he did for his son or something because he liked the show?

For some reason I pulled my ancient BSG novel The Cylon Death Machine off the shelf tonight. The back cover says the episodes it's based on, Gun on Ice Planet Zero, were written by Michael Sloan. That name rang a bell..... It turns out that he wrote the English version of Star Fleet, as well as 4 BSG episodes, and is also the creator of The Equaliser! www.imdb.com/name/nm0805994/

My word. Japan needs Paul Bliss.
That music just doesn't seem to fit. It's really odd how it sounds like someone trying to imitate Queen. My head can't process that!

The 18th Feb 1982 edition (repeated Monday night) is probably worth a listen for fans of Star Fleet. I reckon Paul Bliss must have been watching at the time of original broadcast as there's at least two tracks on their with similarities to bits of Star Fleet music: ABC's Poison Arrow has BIG similarities to the theme tune and Robert Palmer's Some Guys resembles a piece of incidental music. Six months before Star Fleet's broadcast would be about right for these tunes to be influencing the music. If only Star Fleet wasn't poo! -Ralph
