Which kind of recolour do you prefer?

Well when I was ickle a recolour meant it was a new character (ie Thundercracker having same mould as Starscream but different colours). I'm not so keen on the same character having different colours. In my head, that takes away any character having their colourscheme being part of their character. If that makes sense.
So, I'm more predisposed to recolours if it means a new character. Not a hard and fast rule (I fancy both Henkei! and Universe Cyclonus) but generally the way I go.

Unless a mold looks exactly like an old character, shoehorning homage colours can be a bit lame. See: the several million Springer versions and the now bettered Botcon Ironhide.
Of course there is always an exception to the rule, and that are when it is done interestingly, like Universe Ratbat.

Tough choice. There's parts I like and dislike about all three catagories, yet I enjoy them equally.

I was thinking of voting sausages as well. I generally tend to agree with Ralph (as usual)...
And...what Universe Ratbat? I must google this fellow, being a fan of all things Ratbat...

I think a character should always stay the same colour, even when the mould changes.
Hated G2 Sideswipe, because giving Sideswipe a red head means the Red Alert toy (a different character but with a black head) looks more like the original Sideswipe toy than does the new Sideswipe toy. And Red Alert had a red head in the cartoon series, so G2 Sideswipe looks more like cartoon Red Alert than cartoon Sideswipe.
Transformers are identified with colours in my head. I think live-action movie Bumblebee is more Bumblee-ish than a non-yellow Volkswagen would have been.

Ratbat is a great recolour, all four of those repaints are great. Particularly when I new head is involved Botcon does some very good repaints, Dreadwind is fantastic, but even straight repaints like Huffer work well.
Now that I own Ironhide Im not sure I would agree that the Botcon one has been bettered.

Martin - I strongly suspect G2 Sideswipe is a case of wrong instructions being received by the factory. That or very late in the day realising that 2 out of 3 autobots cars were going to be red.
I went for option 3. A good G1 repaint of a newer toy rocks.
